yeah , yeah,... I know it's a long time comin' was it all worth it?... only you guys can decide if this has some real passion behind it. My whole life I have loved this type of art. CARtoons was a car comic book, it basically was the more family friendly version of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth's monster art cars and rat fink. It featured artists like George Trosley, Dave "Big" Deal, Shawn Kerri, Steve Austin, just a few of my favourites.

During some posts about the Rat Fink table... SliderPoint (mike) and I spoke about the old magazine and was told it had been re-released... in celebration of this, and having LOTs of art from the mag, I decided to throw something together. This idea snowballed into a desire to build an "aged" look table... I always loved BorgDog's (Dan) Gemini table, it being a "real" distressed playfield... so I used the components of Gemini as a start for the table, thinking it would be a quick throw together table since it was scripted(eye roll).

I had gotten ahead of myself building and ageing the playfield. I say this because I aged it way too soon... this was not a fun task and I wasn't willing to redo it...but that's a whole other story....

Now that the scene was set, I have an aged PF and now I needed to figure out how I could age the plastics and 3D modelled parts and wire guides. After a bit of playing around, it was all figured out, now for the rubbers. I tried many colors, materials and textures, nothing was working... Mike sent me a texture and god damn it looked awesome. It's one of my fav things in the table (thanks Mike).... Mike also added some lighting effects, like a light with a bad ground and power draw from the power supply... it really came out great...

I had an idea for a special effect back when this table was started. Our awesome VP Devs had added an animation feature and I really wanted to use this table as a showcase for the great features given to us by the devs. I don't want to give away the name of this effect just yet, you guys will see it soon enough. Anyway, I needed a 3D model for this and it was pretty easy to find one. I made a texture for it, and it was done.... yeah right, now it needed to animate. I had no clue how I was going to do this... I first talked to Randr and Dark... both took the time from other projects to throw in their talents so we were getting there. Next it needed to be sent to our VP devs Toxie and Fuzzel, voilà! The animation worked, now it needed to move and react within the table... I asked Dan, "so can it be done?" I believe his answer was something like , "I'm sure it could but wont be easy." So I asked "how about just a little?" He messed with it for a few days and sure as shit, it moved ... but could it do more??

This is the part of the story where I flake out and need to give VP a rest for a while and take care of real life... Fast forward 8-9 months... I return to the scene. While I was gone, Dan and Mike had turned what I thought was an over ambitious dream into reality. Now we're back to me being too quick in ageing the PF , I had never added the scoring to the PF... and I was not redoing the PF. Fast forward another 4 months or so... its time to put this thing to rest. I decided to add the scoring to the inserts... more ageing to all the other crap it needed and my part was complete....

Back to the "special effect," I think only Dan and Mike can explain this and I will have them explain in more detail.. again you guys will really enjoy this. Well at least Dan and Mike, and I think you will... I love it!! sorry again this lingered so long, I take 100% responsibility

BorgDog  has also added a roach chase counter

I really love this table. The roaches crawling the table, the flackey light bub, the oily and dirty playfield rusty paint that is bare and rusty at top of table.
This is a working mans table who cant afford the 10,000 dollar table

This is the krass and bernie table from Cartoons (for those who use to read it as a kid).

This is a daily player on my cab

Great job to all on this masterpiece!!

I am so thankful that this original table does not use Ultra-DMD, as I can't get Ultra-DMD to work on my Windows Vista64bit. (Ultra-DMD just won't Install no matter what I try.)

One of the best original tables ever!!!

Thanks again!!

This looks amazing!  And you wouldn't believe the flak that Pinuck and I took when we released our VP9 version of Sinbad that was "aged"!!  LoL!!  I loved working on that build!

Thanks Guys

this was a good way to show what VPX can do with the combo of materials, textures and bump maps... plus its 3d model animation that isn't often used... and all the great scripting...

I’m shocked you guys took some grief for that release. Those Pinuck releases still feel so real to me. VPX is such a leap forward, I rarely play VP9 anymore, but I still routinely fire up your table, Kruge99.

Haunt’s table is an amazing continuation of a badass tradition.

It wasn't posted too much in the release threads but we received pretty negative PMs about it at the time.  There were many who didn't understand our "outlook" of "what about releasing a VP table that had been stored in a barn for 27 odd years??"  Too many want to believe that pinball can underestimate the test of time and live forever as if they were "brand new" but that is not the case.  Pinball tables are much like humans that age with the passing of time, much like memories that pass like "tears in rain".

Best Regards,

Kruge99.

p.s. wishing everyone a safe and prosperous 2018!  Happy New Year to everyone!

This table is awesome. The bugs cause a lot of slowdown in the beginning for me, but after the initial stampede, everything is smooth sailing.

I was wondering if anyone would care to go a bit in depth as to how they achieved the flickering of the lights. That's a badass effect, and I'm sure more people would love to know how it was done.

Again, thank you for the awesome table!

It’s all smoke and mirrors.... and some random blinking patterns and timers and hit events and changing intensity values.

Awesome, thank you! I also notice the shorts on the flippers, I assume that when the right flipper is held, it lowers the intensity to a specific value range until the left flipper button is pressed?

Its really well done, it feels like there is a short somewhere in the machine.

I love this table.  And, I'm old enough to have purchased a ton of CarToons magazines when they came out.

VPX doesn't really work well on my low end system... is there any way to get a back port to VP9 B2S (even if some features were missing)?

This is one of the best original tables ever made.

Unfortunately, VPX has spoiled this author, (And many other table authors, myself included.), so your chances of him making any tables with VP9 nowadays, or converting VPX table to VP9, are slim to none, and slim already walked out the door. lol

Check out his magnificent VP9 FS version of Rat Fink here...

I don't know how I got here, but this is excellent.  I didn't see chasing roaches in my Saturday, but now this is what I'm doing.  Just a treat of a table to play and look at not to mention a linear (and just too fucking cool) implementation of a mechanic into what we already know.

Gal' dang let me get back at it.

Love this game!

Is there a DMD for this? (I have the scores on the BG, but need something to populate my DMD screen)

Keep up the great work hauntfreaks!   I just downloaded Rat Fink too!
