File Name: Time Warp Desktop

File Submitter: Gilrock

File Submitted: 09 Aug 2014

File Category: VP 9.x Recreations

Author(s): Gilrock
Manufacturer: Williams
Year: 1979
Permission to MOD?: Yes, with approval

This is my first table release and even though there were earlier versions of this table I wanted to start from scratch to learn VP.  I own a real Time Warp machine so all the artwork and plastics were created from photographs of my actual machine.  I also recorded real sounds from the machine for any sounds not provided by the roms.

I created this desktop version and I also uploaded a full screen version containing a dB2S backglass.

I really wanted to have banana flippers but I'm not sure how to get them into the table and functioning properly.  I have the banana flipper models from the Future Pinball version I did of this table if anyone wants to help get them added to the table.

I started with a blank table and used all my original artwork.  I did a lot of inspecting of the Gorgar table to figure out how to do the bumpers and plunger since it was also from Williams about the same time period and had a lot of similar elements.  I had everything done in October 2013 except for converting my desktop version to full screen but I got side tracked with another software project.  So I don't remember exactly what parts of the script I borrowed but I believe it was for the plunger and fading lights and maybe a couple other items.  Those script snippets probably came from the Gorgar table but the comments in the script should provide credit where those snippets originated.

I liked the lighting I saw in Gorgar and other tables so I tried to recreate something similar by making the table darker and having areas near the bulbs lit up.  I spent time making the lights and shadows near the targets look realistic.  To create the lighting effects I actually used the B2S Designer to add lighting to the table graphic and then captured screenshots for the lighting bitmaps.

I developed it in VP 9.1.5 last year but I've also tested it in VP 9.9.0.

Ok,

Couple thing. On my system, wall731 looks funny. I cannot see plastic layer on this particular wall. Can others?

Also, a quick fix for your kicker hole.

1. Make a wall off to the side(same size as Bumperlo is fine), set to invisible, height=15, name the wall whatever.

2. then click on kicker hole (TopKicker) and where it says surface in dropdown menu, pick the wall name you just made.

3. voila. No more ball showing halfway in kicker hole, but perfect :)

Cheers. Fantastic table. Plays amazing look sterling.

Maceman

Hey Maceman....I think I was typing my last post when you posted yours.  I looked and the Wall731 plastic is a transparent piece of plastic on the real machine so I tried to emulate it.  On my display you only really see the edge.

For the ball kicker I'm not sure what you mean.  Are you saying the ball looks like its sitting too low when it's in the kicker hole?  It should look like it's partially covered as it drops into the depression.

Hi Gilrock,

Thanx for that information on what you see on your set-up. I see the same thing. This is no big deal my friend. Just something I was curious about so thanx for clarifying. After fiddlin' for a minute or two. I thought to maybe make an alpha ramp, same height as the wall there already, and size it roughly to the what you want, like i did quickly in this pic. I used the !trans.png layer i think grizz made ages ago as i remembered it had a good transparency look to it when applied.

kicker4.png

You do whatever you want. I just didn't know what the line was for, being unfamiliar with this table. I love it though! Fun.

As to the ball....now that i look closer after making a snapshot, i think it may be just the type of ball image you used, with the lighter bottom part...it looked to me at first like the ball was sunk too much. And after taking a snap of my own suggestion, I lowered the height to 8, as my own height preference :)

kicker3.png

Cheers,

Maceman

EDIT: Here i a snapshot of your original ball height for comparison.
kicker2.png
Hard to tell a difference. Yours looks fine! A i getting picky in my old age or what :)

Maceman, really, what's with those jaggy snapshots, sure maybe about the kicker depth, though the one thing I find of more concern whilst using VP9.90a, the bonus collect feature where the ball is repetitively bumpered back into the bonus collect?

Oh and here's how it looks here...that's a 85% .jpg btw..

tw_t.jpg

This is a great looking table, plays well, nice work, the only real flaw to the gameplay is that bonus collect.

Well done!

StevOz....I just played both my desktop and full-screen versions and I'm not having any issues with the ball kicking from the bonus collect.  My version says 9.9.0 on the about page.  Where does 9.90a come from?  I checked and the angle looks right at 306 and the power is set to 9 so its almost max.  I'll search and see if I can find that version you list.

Yeah, sorry about that. Not sure what happened on upload. My laptop settings are primo so i am not sure where it got distorted....and i never looked at them after upload.

Anyways, one can still see i hope. I don't feel up to reloading unless it keeps anyone up at night :)

I just tried the FS version today Gilrock and the kickers(both!) are definitely needing the tweak. Sometime on the desktop it is hard to see, but on the FS you can really see a half ball when in the kicker.

I would make a wall as described above.

Anyways. Going to enjoy the FS now. Both versions looks nice.

Cheers,

Maceman

VP990a is found here, it should play the same as VP990 as this was a minor update to address some possible memory leaks.

http://www.vpforums....e=7#entry267094

The continued kickout then bumper back into the bonus collect doesn't occur always, though it does happen often and can do it multiple times where it can occur up to 4 or more times without a nudge to prevent it, which I'm sure doesn't happen on the real machine.

hi maceman....I agree the ball looks really low on your screenshot.  I think it looks much better on my display.  Maybe it's a screen resolution difference.  I had a screenshot to show but I can't figure out how to attach it where it doesn't look tiny.  I have tons of problems with this website for some reason.  I can't embed quotes in my replies because the quote button doesn't work for me.  If I accidentally hit the Image button to insert an image URL none of the buttons work on the window that pops up and I can't get rid of it unless I goto the top menu and navigate away to another page.  I can't copy and paste any text into this section.  Its really a pain.

Cant ever remember this machine having the transparent cover over the hole, and the one I own doesn't either.

As SteveOz said, sometimes the ball can come out of the bonus collect hole, hit into the bumpers then back in again. Have had it do 4 or 5 times at once, couple times a game. (in 9.90 and 9.90a)

Real game can do it on the off chance a couple of times with the right bounce.

Table looks great and plays fast like this pin is known to play like.

Nice first release.  :dblthumb:

Well I have the machine sitting in my living room and I can assure you that plastic on the top left has a clear extension and curve's out over the kicker hole and is screwed down to the left side of the A Lane.

And regarding the bonus kicker I'm pretty sure you won't find settings that work for everybody.  I have pretty high end PCs so I'm wondering if everyone having these issues has a more moderate machine.  And yes the real machine does occasionally end up with the ball coming back into the bonus lane after being kicked out.  Heck on my machine it sometimes strikes it weak and it doesn't even make it out of the lane.

great release, a beauty for sure...

but have to check more how the TILT is working, cause have a fantastic (?) 1st ball, calculated & did all perfect to stop points before the RTC, tilted the game, but nothing happend until it finish to count all the bonus, and on that moment only it play warbing sounds & tilt the ball... but was too late, was already rounded the clock... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

may be a clue : it was in the right lane/saucer collect bonus

to be honest, didnt tried more or checked something, as i was quite disgusted, i stop playing there (lol)

btw, very good job on the release, lets wait a banana version :)

Hmm...I guess I'm liking Future Pinball better.  I had no issues reported for my FP version of this table. :)

Riple I'm not really following how the game tilted and what went wrong afterwards.  What is RTC?

Cool the quote feature is working on my work PC....wonder what is messing it up at home.

Anyways I really love both FP and VP.  I've designed this table in both programs and each program had it's strengths and things I didn't like.  I feel the same about the two main frontends available.  I really like things about both of them but there are issues in both of them that have me about ready to put my software developer hat on.
