A question about which rom to use. I recommend using Maior's rom that is on IPDB for download. That romset includes the "clown_b.bin" with the corrected sounds. Could the rom on vpforums be updated with this one?

Also, there is a rom "clown_a.bin" that adds the possibility of activating a freeplay mode that can be added to the original romset by overwriting this file on previous romset. This freeplay mode can be activated from the game's dipswitches (with F6).

The IPDB ROM set throws up a bad checksum error for "clown_b.bin" in the Setup and Setup64 test programs, while the pinclown ROM on VPU is all OK.

At first neither ROM seemed to allow me to add coins (despite playing the coin drop sound), but after further experimentation it seems that the "add credit" and "add credit 2" keys need to be activated either simultaneously or one after the other.

The "English" manual on IPDB (which is in Spanish) states the following:

"1 pieza de 100 ptas. Da 4 ó 3 partidas (según preselector)"

"1 pieza de 25 ptas. ó 2 (según preselector). Da 1 partida."

I think this means that the operator can choose to set the number of plays for 100 pesetas to either 4 or 3 and the cost for one game to either 25 or 50 pesetas.

Any thoughts on this?

The clown_b.bin is an old sound rom and I think it was dumped badly. There has been a rom available for a while that fixes the synchronization of those sounds. MAME has included this corrected rom in its romset for several versions. I don't know why pinmame still has the old one.

The issue of putting in credits is a mystery. You have to put in a lot of coins to activate it. Sometimes 4, sometimes 20 or more. That's why I added the possibility of using the freeplay rom. In reality, this rom only allows you not to discount credits when you press start. But first you have to have at least 1 credit. It's a modification that a user made years ago because these old Inder games didn't have freeplay in the factory rom.
