File Name: Paragon (Bally 1979)

File Submitter: Mustang1961

File Submitted: 27 Jan 2023

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME - MOD Tables

Author(s): bord
32assassin
Wildman (BG)
Manufacturer: Bally
Year: 1979
Permission to MOD?: Yes, with approval

Initially bord wrote:

Here is Bally’s 1978 classic Paragon for VPX. This table is a monster. Very wide, very heavy, very difficult and very fun. I hope this version does it some justice. I spent 2 hours playing it on location last weekend and think the VPX version mimics it nicely.

32assassin rewrote the script for me some months back. This was my first SS project at the time and I had a real Frankenstein mess going on. Thanks, 32a!

Make sure you run this with the latest VPX 10.2 build.

My view on this game: first I want to thank bord for his permission to publish this mod. Unfortunately 32assassin does not answered my pn, now 30 days ago. 1979, what a year in pinball history! I was 18 years old and the word was mine. And ALL amusement halls. Paragon is the perfect reflection of the mood of these times. I played Paragon the last time at CP's Pinball in South Roxana, MO, it was in 2017.

Here I offer you my version 1.0a with these changes:
° game
- new physics, cap optimized, I touched nearly everything
- new POV for cab users
- nearly all sounds are new
- all object sounds in operation
- slight game layout changes in order to reduce ball losts
- protective shields for drop targets, avoid dropping when hit from the side
° BG
- improved appearance of the plasma displays - thanks to Martin Brunker who gave the measures of       his KISS displays (he owns the real game)
- light messages adjusted in place and fonts

- as ever zip contains game, BG and pics for cab users

The sound options are in the F6 settings. I hear the chimes just like I remember from the real table.

Whoops! Too much english.

With artwork by Paul Faris, who liked to draw himself and his wife into the artwork on many of his tables.

I tried both chimes and noises but they don't work. I tried deleting nvram and cfg files but it didn't fix the issue either. Only the sounds in sound manager work. I'm using vpinmame 3.5, can it be the issue?

Make sure you have Use Samples checked when you press F1 during play.

Hi Emre,

I reget that you have trouble with the game. Have you tried the bord's version in comparison? I have multiple version of VP in my installations. VP921, 995, PM5, X6 and X7 in order to avoid compatibility trouble. And this leads to less conflicts.

I hope you can fix the issue soon, sorry I cannot give you a better suggestion.

Sincerely, Christian.

I'm having the same issue as well. But I'm having it on more tables than this one- all Bally tables from this era (Lost World, Harlem Globetrotters, etc). F1 and samples, deleting nvram and cfg files haven't done anything. They were all previously working.

Hi Itchigo,

have you tried to play these tables with VPX.6?

hi itchigo, do you have "s3250u3.zip" in vpinmame\samples folder ?

additionally i set the bally sounds #1 - #3 to 10% and channel #0 to 0% (in the vpinmame.exe  -  "~" menu)

and in dip switch menu: chime & tunes

Thank you digitalarts. This fixed my problem with the sounds. I've downloaded the sample files from here;

Thanks for the refresher on this. When I upgraded my Vpinmame I made a new folder to troubleshoot a different problem. Apparently, I never moved it back. I knew it had to be something simple, thanks!

I sometimes have no ROM sounds on this table but it usually works fine. Odd. All of the troubleshooting here checks out fine. I just have to hit F3 1-3 times and the sound comes back.

I have to admit that it makes it feel like a real table--complete with real parts and my so-so soldering skills.

Whoops! Too much english.
