File Name: Dark Shadow (Nuova Bell Games 1986)

File Submitter: mfuegemann

File Submitted: 21 May 2020

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME Recreations

Author(s): mfuegemann
Manufacturer: Other - Pinball
Year: 1986
Permission to MOD?: Yes, without approval

This is Dark Shadow by Nuova Bell Games.

Peter Blakemore from www.specialwhenlit.co.uk provided lots of detailed images and gameplay videos, so that I was able to build this table. You can find the gameplay videos on Youtube.
Joey2001 tested the table and gave valuable advice on what had to be fixed or adjusted. So we had to find a solution for the ball beeing trapped by the resetting drop targets, a thing that did not happen during my plays.
I included his POV file, so that You can easily try his settings.

At the top of the script You have the usual options to adjust the sound volume, set GI brightness and FreePlay.
You can deactivate the top rubber post (below the top right target) and use the option to change the upper flipper settings to make life a bit easier, if needed.
I added a DIP switch menu to adjust the number of balls, activate the Match feature and to show the number of credits entered.

If You want to adjust further settings, You can uncomment line 74. That sets the left magnasave key to the machines test switch. Use the test switch to cycle and the start game key to adjust.
I have no knowledge of the details there, though.

The ROM file here has no sound support. You can find a complete ROM set for instance at VPUniverse.

Have fun
Michael

I play the table in the harder mode with upper post and a lower angle for the upper flipper.
So it's harder to shoot the upper little ramp. It's a lot of fun, to play this table. Great physics.

Thank you once again Michael. Looking forward to play this, especially since Joey2001 almost challenged me saying it needs to be play on the "hard mode" ;)

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

I like some of the layout of this pin! Never heard of it before now. :D

Have to agree with Joey and PracticeDummy here. This is a hidden gem. I like the unusual layout, and the theme is not bad either. Thanks again Michal for making this.

Thanks so much for this nugget. I would never have seen this game or played it in real life. The game is quite odd to play and quirky from Nuova Bell but you have given us great physics adjustments to play it.

This game reminds me of some other game but I can't recall which. A fine addition to the rare gems on my cab. Cheers!

Thank you for this hidden gem.  I was pretty active making the arcade rounds in the 80s and never saw this but operators were starting to swap out for solely video games at the time.  Once again you've made a table that beats out the newer year tables with all the bells, whistles, toys, and kitchen sink.  Thank you very much for this!

I was skeptical about this bizarre Nuova Bell table, but hey what do I know, turns out it's a super fun game and kept my interest much longer than I'm willing to admit. It helps it was executed beautifully and plays great so many thanks Michael, Peter and Joey! Definitely going back for some more fun

P.S. @Joey2001 what's your high score? Knowing you has to be at least 7-Bazillion  :moon:

This is a really fun to play table! I would also agree that it play just right with the hard mode (default) setting.
Thanks Michael and all involved, including those who have provided the resources.

When I test the table in my virtual pinball the table has not sound instead if I test in other pc if it has sound.

I have saw that the extension of sound file of the rom it,s SND.

Need I install any audio program to that snd file in window 7 64bits.?

No, you should not have to do that ?  I haven't checked, but, if you get the rom off vpu, you might need more than one rom to get the sound as vpu is mostly split sets. Meaning, sometime you have to have more than one rom file to complete a rom. Split sets are a way of saving space, commonly used in mame to save hd space.

Send me a PM if you can't resolve it.

Hi,

the VPU-ROM contains the sound file. A possible reason for the described behaviour could be a second ROM file around in the table folder.

I send him my rom, which work. He write, that at another PC he has sound.
So maybe a problem with the settings in win7? But he told, everything is correct.

I'm in the same boat. I tried the VPU ROM and still no table sounds other than the rolling ball.

If you still can't hear the rom sounds, hit F1 while table is running, and make sure Use Sound is checkmarked in the rom options.
