File Name: Tales of the Arabian Nights 4k

File Submitter: flupper1

File Submitted: 16 Aug 2019

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME Recreations

Author(s): Flupper
Rothbauerw
Manufacturer: Williams
Year: 1996
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, with approval

Full rebuild of Totan in Blender, all prerendered for 4K resolution. Thanks to:
Original build by JPSalas in 2015
High res playfield and plastics - Clark Kent
Beta Testing and Table Reference - Randr
DOF - Arngrim
Special thanks:
Knorr, for sounds from his soundpack
nFozzy, for physics techniques
G5K, for rendering advice

For best performance use these settings:
- use 10.7.3 or higher
- no brute-force 4x SSAA (is not necessary), but quality SMAA
- exclusive full screen with 1 for FPS limiter and 1 for maximum prerendered frames
- Ambient occlusion, ball trails, screen space reflections all off
Other remarks:
- magnasave buttons changes the LUT, see script options
- it is advised to keep the POV settings as they are in the download for the full screen mode; all textures have been prerendered for this POV
- day/night slider does not do much (only on lamp and playfield), use LUT to change contrast/brightness

Just played a few games. One question remains unclear, is the left and right cage a bit slower than in other versions preventing the pinball to use the outlane out? (They work in test mode, but I think they are maybe not activated as fast as I would expect them to be?)

Another joyful day! Thank you very much to everyone involved to write the history of visual pinball to another highlight! :)

Damn I'm at work....

Simply stunning....jaw dropping...a literal masterpiece, and an amazing achievement.

@flupper

Your sheer dedication and passion for this is an amazing site to behold.

Thank you so much for this wonderful gift to the community. Being able to see this table in my cabinet will be amazing in 4K. Being able to play it in my own home will be a privilege.

Thank you so much!

It looks so so so tangible, physical, the beauty of the table together with the mechanical sounds and the physics, this is a new level. Amazing!

edit: the sound when hitting the genius, that makes the difference!  :otvclap:

After playing this for the last hour I am speechless. It plays as good as it looks. The right magna-save option for different lighting is genius!! Actually, everything about this table is genius!!

It is for me from the real pinball not 100% exactly clear where the sensor is placed but maybe I had only a bit unluck with my three first games as it does also occur with other TOTAN.

Nothing to worry about, just an info from me to maybe reach some tiny little bit more, what is already within the actual and seen perfection included in this table nearly impossible to improve! You all created another masterpiece. :)

Spectacular!!!

Thanks JPSalas, Clark Kent, Randr, Arngrim, Knorr, nFozzy, G5K, Rothbauerw, Flupper, VP Devs, and anyone else who may have had an unseen helping hand in this masterpiece!!

I have always loved this tables sounds and gameplay, but have never played a real table version!!

This has to qualify as real as it can get, without being in physical form!!

Great job!!! Preserved for all time!!!

Exciting times in the pinball community!!

Your work is appreciated!!!

Carry on.

This table is absolutely stunning, what a great build. I need to hurry up and get my new playfield monitor to do it justice. Thank you to all involved on this project.

Guess i'll be the first one who leaves a somewhat negative comment.

I have an issue with the lighting and colors with this one. It looks too washed out compared to most other tables. This is especially evident when the lights go off and the table gets darker. It looks too gray-ish with very low contrast, reminds me of old LCD TVs with weak blacks. The table also feels like there is an orange color filter applied to it. It definitely doesn't look as nice as some earlier preview images in the WIP thread.

I know you can change some color/lighting presets with the magna save button but i couldn't find one that looks good enough to use as default.

Sorry for being negative about this obviously great table, hope you look at it as some legit criticism and not needless complaining.

Edit: This is how the colors look:

Is there a way to make it look close to this? (Image taken from the WIP thread)

@imgema:

This is interesting, let's investigate what is going wrong. This is a comparison between the old screenshot and the one I made yesterday when releasing (right side is the new one):

comparison1_t.jpg

So on my cab the quality is the same. At first glance it looks like you are using an older beta of 10.6 or before, since the playfield is quite dark.

Potential issues:

- did you change anything after downloading? Like day/night, environment emission image, LUT settings, etc? If so: please redownload and try again the table unchanged.

- Are you using the latest 10.6 beta, at least version 3751? If not, please download and unzip whole file on your visual pinball directory.

- Are you using SweetFX or something? Switch it off to try.

- Are you using tweaked color settings in the nvidia or AMD control panel? With gamma or something? please return to default to try.

I do see graphics issues on the genie which I have not yet seen before. Could you give some information, like:

- What is your graphics card?

- What settings do you have in the visual pinball video/graphics options? (screenshot)

- what is the "output dynamic range" in the nvidia settings (or equivalent for AMD)? IT should be "full" and not "limited"

I am quite sure you are not using the latest 10.6. In the latest version, "disable lighting" is supported for the playfield. In older versions it was not (left is older version):
