File Name: Conan (Rowamet 1983) VPX Sound+Reg MOD

File Submitter: xenonph

File Submitted: 25 Aug 2017

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME - MOD Tables

Author(s): JPSalas
Batch
Xenonph
Manufacturer: Other - Pinball
Year: 1983
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Unspecified

v2.1
Converted all pics to WebP format to reduce overall size of table.(VPX7.2 Required)
Converted Wav files in sound manager to ogg format which reduces file size.
File size went from 25.2 MB's to 9.23 MB's!!!

v2.0
Added modified JPSalas LUT Toggled with Buy-In Key (2 Key).
Converted mp3's to ogg format, and scripted music to be played from Conan folder.
(Place Conan folder in your Music folder)
Also lowered Decibal Level on all the music and sword clashing sounds by 6.4 Db's.
All sounds in manager are played through Backglass now.
Added NVOffset script command, so not to interfere with other tables using same rom.
Added Fluppers Flashers to the 3 Bumpers and 2 Bumperslings.

I first would like to thank JPSalas and Batch for giving me permission to make these VPX mods. I would also like to thank them for making great tables!!
They both put in alot of time and work on the original tables, and it is appreciated!! So if you like this mod, I would encourage you to thank the original authors of the table!

Batch's VP9 Conan DT version...
http://www.vpforums....&showfile=11060

JPSalas' VPX Rolling Stones..
http://www.vpforums....&showfile=12914

I also would like to thank Allknowing2012 and Gtxjoe for teaching me how to add timers to script.

I also would like to thank Steve "Slydog43" for which these VPX mods would not be possible!!

I used Batch's graphics from his VP9 version, as his version was the best version of Conan available in my opinion.
I added Batch's Backdrop to DT version, and had to modify it to fit the DMD reels. I just enlarged the box he had in upper left and moved the reels to fit. Any other way would have messed up his backdrop pic.(It all can still be seen clearly.)
I added Crom Font for Backdrop text lights.

SoundMOD:
I found a bunch of sound effects on Google search.
All of these sound effects are from the first Conan the Barbarian movie that was made in the 80's.
There are 10 background music sounds. 5 for plunger pull, 5 for Drain.
There 19 other voice and sword sound effects trigered by bumpers, rollovers, targets, saucer, coin insert.

Place Conan folder into music folder where Visual Pinball is installed.

The Credits and Match are off by default.
Hit F6 on keyboard when table is running to open Settings Menu, and you can adjust from there.
(I was going to include a nvram with the Credits and Match on, but it would be just as simple for you to change using F6.)

This table uses the 7 Digit Rolling Stones ROM. (rollstob)

Hope you like it!

Stay tuned for VPX version of Conan the Destroyer sound mod!!

Thanks for another table, Love adding VPX versions of vp9 tables that didn't exist before.  Anyone have a better B2s than the one floating around?

After I make the VPX Conan sound mod, I might venture into making dB2S backglasses for both Conan and Destroyer mods.

I would have already made the VPX Conan sound mod, but I need to find some other subs to add my timers to. (The VP9 version had 4 drains that I had the timers connected to. I just need to find another Sub to add them to, as there is only one drain on the VPX version. Otherwise I could have just copied and pasted those parts of script.)

This VPX mod was harder to make than you might think.

Try to do it yourself, using Batch's VP9 version. His playfield pick had no lights whatsoever on it. I still don't think I positioned it exactly the same as his, but was close enough for me.

It was not an easy task.

I am still consider myself a beginner at all this, but I am a quick learner, and I am learning something new everyday .

I am only going to get better at all this!! And I love working on these tables!!

Thanks for the feedback Steve.

None of these VPX tables would have been possible for me to make, without your help my friend.

I can't thank you enough!!

Keep on Pinballin'

Just uploaded VPX Conan Sound Mod and awaiting approval.

I added it to same download page as regular mod.

For one, I noticed after making the VPX sound mod, that the right outlane sound effect was not working.

I then looked through script and noticed it was same as VP9 script, except it had 14 in script, and was named 16 in object menu.

I first tried changing the number in script to 16, and that triggered sound but also tilted table when activated. So I decided to just rename the object to 14 to see if that would work, and it did.

So this right outlane problem is also in JPSalas's Rolling Stones table. You can simply click the rollover in editor and change name to sw14 to fix his Rolling Stones VPX version.

It is hard to notice if you don't have a sound effect activating when right outlane is triggered.

Hope you like the VPX sound mod.

Love the Sound Mod table, but am having a couple of issues. Every time I open the table I get an error message saying "The temporary file could not be written". I also get the rom sound as well as the sound effects. I can turn off the rom sound, but then lose the rom sounds from JP's Rolling Stones. Is there a better solution?

Change Line 961 to this..

Sub Table1_Exit():Controller.Stop:Controller.Games("rollstob").Settings.Value("sound")=1: End Sub

This will turn your rom sounds back on with table exit.

So JP's Rolling Stones will have rom sounds after you play this table.

I am currently in the process of updating Six Million Dollar Man Sound Mod, but I will update this table also with rom sounds turned off by default.

Edit:

Here is a personal link to upgraded table until new one gets approved.

Weird thing was I downloaded table and it had same error before table would load into editor. Besides the sound scripts the only other thing I did was add the exit sub at end of script. Well I kept getting that error until I erased that exit sub. and saved table. I then added the same exact exit sub, and now for some reason the error is gone when loading table into editor. Very strange!!

Let me know if you get same error with this updated version.

Thanks xenonph, that seem to have fixed both issues. First time I adjusted the view and saved the table the error "The temporary file could not be written" returned. Tried again and the second time it saved with the error returning? So all sorted now. Thanks

It is a very good table, the gameplay changed a lot since the vp9 version, in vp9 it was near to be on Flash Gordon level : drain, then sometime a few shots, then drain and drain again, the vp9 version was basically a version in which to play a decent score you had to nudge a lot.

The vpx version changed that a lot, it feels a lot more balanced, i don't know if the table lines have been slightly edited or if it's simply the different physics that change it all, but you can reasonnably score on the vpx version without having to nudge at all.

I really love this table, and it play incredibly smoothly, performance is excellent. And the sound mod bring back so much memory to my mind, the Conan movie had such an amazing soundtrack.

I'm really amazed how a sound mode can enhance the atmosphere of a pinball that much.

After toying for a bit with both version (the regular sounds and the sound mod), the regular version feels so ... lacking ?

A bit with the Flash Gordon table, after playing so much with sound modded version of it, i simply can't go back to the regular sound of it.

Thanks for this amazing modded table.

Thanks for the kind words!!

The reason I updated this table was because Bigus asked permission to make a mod of it, and I had to fix the music timers, as I made this right before I learned how to add timers.

So you can expect a Bigus mod real soon!! I am then going to ask his permission to use his mod, to make a Conan the Destroyer mod!!

Whole lotta moddin going on!! lol

HUGE thanks again to JPSalas and Batch!!

This place would not be the same without you guys!!

Your work is appreciated!!

Carry on.

I don't think anyone compares to JPSalas!! He is one of a kind, and we are lucky to have him in this community!!

But what me and you do have in common with JP, and what puts us in the same category as him, is we all spend alot of our free time, just like him, helping in the pinball community!!

Thanks again JPSalas and Batch!!

All your work is appreciated!!

On a side note, someone reported that the b2s backglass is not showing 7 digits, or they are messed up and showing 7th digit in next players score area.

I never made a db2s backglass for this table, so you might want to ask that author who made the db2s backglass.

If you have problems with the scoring led's on the DT backdrop on this table, try deleting your nvram.

Carry on.

Hello, first of all thanks for the table, I like it very much, very good sounds! I wanted to ask you if there is any way that pressing F6 does not work on a par with the Rolling Stones table, because what I do in one happens in the other.
I did the alias thing, renaming rollstob to conan and adding NVOffset (1), when launching the table rollstob v1.txt is created in the nvram folder but the problem continues.

I have already added an NVOffset (13) command to Line 51. (Added this to all my updated mods.)

If you changed to the alias name conan, then your text file in your nvram folder should be named conan v13.txt, or since you changed NVOffset to 1, it would be conan v1.txt.

I just tested this, and I cannot get them to seperate. Whatever is toggled in the dipswitch menu effects both conan alias and rollstob.

Maybe someone with more knowledge about how the VPMAlias works, can tell you why this is not working.

Ok, thanks! no problem. Also try to disabled sound in F1 menu with this... but not work...

Change Line 961 to this..

Sub Table1_Exit():Controller.Stop:Controller.Games("rollstob").Settings.Value("sound")=1: End Sub

This will turn your rom sounds back on with table exit.

So JP's Rolling Stones will have rom sounds after you play this table.

I am currently in the process of updating Six Million Dollar Man Sound Mod, but I will update this table also with rom sounds turned off by default.

I never disabled the rollstob rom sounds on this table.

If you want the rom sounds disabled, you would add this Line to Table Init Sub...

         Controller.Games("rollstob").Settings.Value("sound")=0

And make sure to add this to Exit Sub, so rom sounds are turned back on when exiting table...

        Controller.Games("rollstob").Settings.Value("sound")=1
