Hi,

so I am setting up my pinballx setup and was wondering what naming std / setup people are using?

I know that the B2S backglass file is named the same as the table file, but do people generally rename the table name and author to a more generic name. ? I know that the name of the table videos, audio and backglass & DMD videos all need to match the same filename for it all to work nicely.

Are people using B2S backglass for the backglass or displaying Backglass videos? I see some B2S backglasses are slow to load - ie. TZ.  So static images or a video would be better?

Any tips, links to other threads , etc would be much appreciated.

thanks!

the table name and the media name does not need to match

when you add a game to your list this is the XML format used

its not an official naming scheme but their is a standard naming scheme for your media

Table Name (Manufacture Year)

	</game>
	<game name="Table Name">
		<description>Media Name</description>
		<rom></rom>
		<manufacturer></manufacturer>
		<year></year>
		<type>/type>
		<hidedmd>False</hidedmd>
		<hidebackglass>True</hidebackglass>
		<enabled>True</enabled>
		<rating>0</rating>
	</game>

I seen some naming scheme that include the authors name and the version number on the name such as

table_name_(Manufacture)_author_version_exetype

exetype = Ph5, VPX ect.

I don't like those specific naming schemes because I'm lazy,  I don't want to update my XML each time a new version of the table comes out.

I use the generic Media naming scheme Table Name (Manufacture Year) on my tables.

When I download a new table,  I add the author name and version number in the table info. (if its missing)

rename the table to the generic name

record a new video

and drag and drop the new video an table into my cab

their is no need to update the XML!!!!!!!!   unless its a VP9 to VPX replacement.

I'll bet you get as many different opinions as you do ppl replying to this post...

I try to keep the table filename as released by the author.  This way I can keep straight whether I've downloaded that file.  The media name will vary but is also not ipdb standard.  I like to include author and version in that media name when there are multiple good releases.

Yes this means updating the various xml databases, table images, wheel images each and every time a table is updated.  Somewhat of a drag but it's just a process.  Takes only a minute to rename everything after the new table release passes muster.

I name the directb2s file the same , so the PinballX front end loads the b2s.  Doesn't bother me that some take a moment to load.

I named my files like ipdb-name (manufacturer year) version. Then I record backglass and playfield with gtxjoe's great program.
Also search for all other files (flyers, instruction cards etc.)

Thanks for the replies guys. (I thought I responded earlier, but I guess that post didnt go through)

I think I may keep the table and b2s files the same name - based on the table name, and in the Game Manager use the description with the more general name. I have seen that PinballX picks up the description name when matching files for DMD, table videos and table audio.
