Looking for some guidance/clarification.

OR to suggest a new feature.

Is there a way to control the Volume output of the ROM sounds.

As an example,

Some Data East machines ( Eg. Back to the future ) had a physical volume knob.
So there is no coin door controls for volume.

And the old machines ,  ( Eg. Black Hole, James Bond, Nine Ball ) also don't have any coin door controls or dip switches for volume.

I want to be able to attenuate those ROM sounds.
So that they balance better with my mechanical sounds.

At the moment the ROM sounds are WAY too loud in the vintage tables.

But for all my VP9 VPX tables I have achieved a good balance between ROM and Mechanical sounds.

Is there a setting I'm missing?

What I imagine would be a cool tool  would be a volume attenuation in the VpinMame dialog .
Adjustable on a Per-Table basis.
Default would be standard %100,
And then you could turn it down if you wanted.

The only way that I know of to adjust the volume on the tables which are not controlled by the ROM is to do the following using your keyboard and mouse:

Click on the PinMAME score window (sometimes referred to as the PinMAME DMD)

Press the tilde key - the key to the left of the 1 key on the keyboard - to open a white box

Using the up and down arrow keys scroll through the channels until you find one that needs adjusting

To adjust that channel use the left and right arrow keys - left arrow key lowers the volume, right arrow key raises the volume

Repeat the previous two steps to adjust other channels

When done press the tilde key to close the white box

Click anywhere on the table to return focus to the table

Like you though I would like to see something developed where this method is no longer needed.  Sometime ago someone added to the vbs scripts where you can use F12 to bring up a dialog box where you enter a number between 0 and -32 to adjust the volume (with 0 being max volume and -32 being min volume) but the person who developed this defaulted the volume parameter to 0 which meant all tables were at max volume even though the volume was not at max.  So that needs to be rethought if that is still in use.

I know this may not fully answer your question but for now that is what we deal with.

I am just starting out with this, but have the same problem...

Tried with one of the first tables I downloaded, The Simpsons Pinball Party and I first thought it was broken, until I noticed the rom sound WAS there but super faint.

Not really sure how what you posted helps though, when I do it it already shows that volume being at 100%

Thanks, I actually re-tried the 8-9 method and it worked, with the side notes that:
- Pressing end was not needed
- if you press 8 it just adds a quarter, you actualky first have to press 9 first and then you cAn press 8

Now off to search my next issue: why I have very limited resolutions to choose from and it doesn't display in full screen with any of them... :(

I've always used this method and it works a treat.  Way easier than trying to adjust individual voice volumes in VPM directly.   For some of the loud WPCs I typically enter somewhere between -5 and -10.

I don't understand your complaint about defaulting to 0 volume (no adjustment).   The purpose of this is to balance the sound levels relative to other tables.  Use the Windows volume control to adjust the overall volume.

Of course, this doesn't help if the sample and music volumes are out of balance (like Monday Night Football) due to some sort of bad defaults in VPM.  In which case you have to go to the individual channels and adjust them.

On the issue of defaulting to 0 when you bring up the F12 dialog box:

The main reason is that on tables such of Phantom of the Opera, DE Time Machine and several others that I can't think of at the moment, the default volume is so low that you really can't hear it.  If you press F12 and enter a value to adjust the volume you can't enter a number greater than 0 (or so I am led to believe).  You can only enter a negative number and that lowers the volume.

UPDATE :

Ignore - I just found that it does stick. I must have done something wrong when I tried last.
Volume in registry seems to be a viable way as well. -8 seems to be fffffff8.
All is Good. I do take registry backups.

@djrobx : Does the F12 method hold over from game to game ? I mean. Most if not all Stern M200 https://www.ipdb.org...advanced&mpu=34 has a very high VPM sound. So, I turn it down. Then on the next game. I need to adjust it up again if it is not also a M200.

That is at least what I'm seeing and I hope some day to be able to use a front end and don't have to fiddle with the keyboard for every table when I have friends over.

Does the ta2686 method stick I wonder ?

I was pretty happy when I found a reg entry that said something about volume. But, I guess that is used fo something else. Didn't notice any change.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

Yep.   The F12 settings are stored in the User\VPReg.stg, so as long as you back that file up it'll be kept as well.
