This is my newly acquired Embryon:

 

 

 

Everything is working great except I have a minor issue with the lower right flipper sticking in the up position occasionally.

 

I have checked it mechanically and everything moves perfectly smooth. 

 

I was thinking the leaf switch and the EOS leaf switch might be dirty so I used some electronic component cleaner on an old tooth brush and gently worked the contacts to clean them but it didn't seem to improve anything.

 

I don't want to invest in any "flipper rebuild" kits since they include a bunch of mechanical parts I probably do not need.  Does anyone have any other suggestions to remedy this sticky flipper?

 

The coil is not energized when the flipper is stuck in the upright position.  If I reach inside the coin door and gently push on the flipper, it swings back down to the proper position.  Could this just be a weak, 30 year old spring?

Does it just get stuck?  Or do you still hear a buzz noise from the solenoid when its stuck?  It could be a number of things like bad eos switch, bad coil sleeve, weak spring, bad transistor in flipper board or sometimes the flipper coil stop gets smashed flat and causes problems.  Best bet is to try and take apart the flipper and clean the coil sleeve, coil plunger and inspect the spring, wires, coil stop, coil,  etc..  Clean it up real good and see if the problem continues.  Just remember dont use any lube.  It just gathers dust and dirt and will make it stick again later.

Replace the plastic coil sleeve, it's like a .50 fix and your flippers will act like brand new.

 

That the one from Hamilton? I had my eye on that one for a couple of months...

You're not only an electronic Genius, you're a mind reader too??.  Yes, it was located in Hamilton.    As it turns out, we (the seller and I) are well acquainted with a few of the pinball people around the Toronto area and are who also involved in one way or the other with the TOPL.

 

I've been talking to the guys at Starburst and even though the mechanical parts are moving perfectly smoothly and do not look worn to my untrained eye, I've agreed to do a flipper rebuild kit which includes the sleeve you mentioned as well as new springs etc.

check inside the actual coil for the plastic sleeve insert

if it is flared at its end the plastic may be hanging up on the metal rod

replace it and the problem should clear itself up

check all the other coils too for wear

also the rod itself may have a mushroomed end that will also hang up in the sleeve

I was wondering if it was the Hamilton(Kijiji Ad) one as well. If so I was curious because the ad said new flippers and such and working perfectly etc...???

So although it looks amazing, do you feel you got slightly stiffed on this aspect, or is this something the seller couldn't properly report to you before buying?

I only paid 1250, and no I don't feel stiffed at all.  (this one is from a collector/ex-operator with about 60 machines in his personal collection) 

Buying 30+ year old machines means that a couple of gremlins come with the territory.  As soon as you tear down a machine and set it up elsewhere you're going to create some problems to sort out.
