Ordered a Meta Oculus 3 today. Since I've never worn a VR headset before we'll see how I like wearing it and playing the game that comes with it - hopefully there's no motion sickness involved. If there is, I'll return it in a New York minute!

If there is, ease into it. Play for a few minutes and quit. When I went VR in iRacing I knew instantly I had motion sickness when I went around a few corners. So, for a week I went around the tracks at a very slow speed and only played for 5 min or so. I finally got over it and was fine.

My brother-in-law was in the Navy for 22 years on carriers. I guess all that swaying made him immune. First time he put on my headset, nothing. He felt fine.

Not the main medical reason why i gave up VR, but with VR can come some of that.

Try it first and see how you go , dont want to put you off.

Yep as you say dont try playing for hours on end in one go.

I wouldnt advise hours on end even when totally used to VR, half hour to hour max in one go and then a good break (imo)

Motion sickness is generally more of an issue when the scene you are looking at conflicts with the senses that your brain expects for that particular scene.  So for instance if you are flying a flight sim and you bank the plane, or perform a loop, your brain expects certain orientation signals from the inner ear, but when those signals don't arrive that's when things start to get sickly. Locomotion is the other issue, if you are playing a walkaround game and you push forward on your joystick and slide to a new position like some floating nun, that can tickle your brain's vomit button after a while. Whereas if you physically walk around in VR then there is no issue.

One other thing that can really send your brain into a spin is when there is a brief glitch in the VR movement and the framerate drops or pauses for a moment but your head or body is still physically moving.

Motion sickness is also something that can get better over time, like getting your sea legs on a boat. So if there is some sickness at first, push on through (edit: after taking a break). You can also perform movements with your body to mimic what might be happening in VR, so for instance if you are on a VR roller coaster, lean into the corners and lean back and look upwards during the loops, this lessens the sickness in my experience.

There's also sometimes some weird sensations after initial use, which can range from a feeling that the real world is not so real, to a general feeling of detachment. Sometimes your hands can feel like they are not your own, or offset slightly from where your mind expects them to be, a slightly intoxicated feeling.

The good thing is that VR pinball is fairly benign in terms of motion sickness as you aren't moving around much, at least in my experience with the Pinball FX VR games (I havent had a chance to play VPX VR as my PC isn't up to it).

Gravy hit the nail on the head, you probably wouldn't experience motion sickness with VR Pinball but, and like I did, you probably will with games like Dirt Rally. Driving a race car in VR is an awesome experience but you need the stomach for it. I was able to overcome the feeling by ending my game session when I started to feel it coming because if you let it hit you you may need to go lay down for 90 minutes. So stopping when you start to feel it then the next play session you will find you can go a little bit longer and then after that even longer until it doesn't bother you at all. I was surprised to find that the game doesn't even bother some of my friends.

There is almost no motion when you play pinball. So it is pretty unlikely to get sick.

I would definitely not recommend using things like vr-launcher/vr-popper to go in and out of the tables.  Taking off the headset in between tables I think makes the experience better where keeping the headset on for extended periods just wears on you.

I have both in the same cabinet, but now I'm building one just for VR.

Playing in VR is really cool but it is tiring if played for a long time. Furthermore, 3D vision is binocular. In my opinion, it's worth it as another option to play.

In cabinet mode, I use a 3D TV. Although in 2d mode you have good resolutions with
120hz TV, in my opinion I have the impression that it looks like a PC gamer.

I can't play in 2D.

Unfortunately the 3D TVs are out of the market. It takes a little work to readjust all the POVs to your better mode as well as Reshade to avoid divergences but it's worth it.

Pay attention to Gravy's comment below.

"There is a third option, replace one of the screens in your existing cab with an LG Cinema3D TV screen or other brand using the same 3D tech. Depending on your existing screen, it may be a step backward in resolution (1080P) and refresh rate (60hz) but it's pretty great in 3D and is full colour, just very slightly darker due to the tint of the glasses. It's also worth testing out anaglyph 3D, you lose some colour but get to keep all the features of your existing screen.

You'll need to find one secondhand as no longer made. There are also some 4K 3D screens, but they tend to start at around 49" so may need a larger cabinet build.

The other disadvantage with the polarised 3D screens is you lose half the resolution on one axis in 3D mode."

Regards

real cabs are awesome of course, but VR is worth it for:

- no repairs to mechanicals (i have enough hobbies, i just want to play pin)

- play anywhere i have VR set up

- don't need to spend millions to have all these tables playable on demand

- i've been planning a move for a while. i would only buy real cabs at a forever home

with a stubby, it's very, very convincing. all depends on how willing to let go you are so your brain can "sell" the illusion. even without one it's amazing. i play everything max with a 4090, truly a delight.

there's going to be the people coming from owning cabs that spent a lot and love their cabs though, and that's fine. i'm coming from the other side of already being into VR. i also use this for sim racing/flying and general VR. my cabs would be sitting collecting dust 99% of the time.

my whole PC and VR set up which is a higher end above-index PCVR headset is still maybe 40% of just a single cabs cost. if i was loaded i'd buy tables left and right too :dblthumb:

It's still a lot now-days.

I've always wanted a clean-looking Star Trek - The Next Generation pinball machine.

Used to be $2,000. Now 20-years later they are $10,000. It's cool, but still haven't written that check. I'm guessing I have about $1500 invested in my ALP ... that seems more my speed for now.

Have used the Oculus 3 for several days now. Downloaded the FX2 tables from Meta to get it set up, and to get an idea of how 3d pinball looks and plays.

Here are my observations so far. I have yet to install VPX.

-The Oculus 3 display is excellent.

- No motion sickness issues - but I've only played pinball with it;

- It works well with my existing glasses - aviator type lenses may be too big.

- This reminded me of why I don't play Zen tables in my cab  - prefer Williams or Bally - hate it when a pinball game jumps to a video game - I just wanna play pinball without interruption.

- The head strap assembly that comes with the Oculus 3 is CHEAP, UNCOMFORTABLE CRAP.  So much so that I purchased a $30 aftermarket one on Amazon. It made a world of difference in comfort and adjustability.

I only got into Virtual Pinball after buying a real pinball machine(Stern Jurassic Park)(I mean I played Pinball Arcade a lot before, but I'm more talking about vpin cabinets).   In fact I'd say I generally got obsessed with pinball, in the it's almost all I think about, after I bought my first real machine.   What I realized about buying the machine is, while it was really cool I owned one, finally, I never ever went to the arcades to just play one machine.   The need for more machines was immediate.   So I got one of the cheap arcade 1up cabs to calm myself down, and eventually created a better vpin cabinet setup.  After awhile though I grew tired of pancake pinball and pretty much only play in vr now.   I will absolutely buy more real machines eventually, but vpin has definitely saved me money, I think if I had a aversion to video game pinball I'd probably have at least 3 more pinball machines by now.

After purchasing the Quest 3 and playing the VR pinball games available from Meta - I'm not really that impressed with them.

But - decided to go ahead and build a stubby anyway. Already had enough spare parts from prior cabinet builds - so all I had to purchase was a $29 box on Amazon to contain it.

Ordered parts to build a new computer for it:

Ryzen 7600X CPU

Galax RTX 4070 GPU

ASUS B650 Motherboard

32 Gig DDR5 Memory

Corsair 4000D Case

Why go this route as it's overkill?

I follow the news closely. If China decides to mess with Taiwan, that could affect production and shipments from TSMC, which AMD and NVIDIA both use to fab their chips. It's going to take a few years before equivalent fabs are up and running in the US. So I decided to build a more future proof upgrade now - just in case.

I have a stubby cab 3 screen setup with SSF and DOF. VP VR is the future!

I don't even play in pancake mode anymore unless it's multiplayer. But you need good hardware, including a good VR headset. Not cheap! But nothing compared to owning real pins. But for Multiplayer, pancake mode is a must as sharing a headset is not practical.

Wait, so you CAN play VPX on Meta Quest? I saw a post about it and someone directed that person to the general VR forum and I didn't see anything in there about how to do it. Is it like "create a virtual desktop and then pull up VPX" sort of thing? Or is there a more reliable way? I only have a Quest 2 as well. Idk if that matters.

There is a VR version of VPX for some time. Yes, you start Virtual Desktop or another solution and start VPX on your PC.

I started with my Quest 2 and used Oculus Link, then Oculus Air Link, then i got my Quest 3, and now i use Steam Link. Others use Virtual Desktop.

Try it. Start the VPX8 release candidate 3 OpenGL version, load a table and press play. VR mode is enabled by default, so....

I have both separeted. I like both.

One cabinet for 3D TV.

One small cabinet for VR.

Although 3D TV has no VR enviroment and no walk through like VR, it is very close to VR to play with VPX 10.8 GL.

0,003 Kg glasses on face and faster start up.

So cabinet with 3D TV is my first option.

What 3D TV do you use? Those TVs usualy have a pretty high lag.
