File Name: Caveman (Gottlieb 1982)

File Submitter: DarthMarino

File Submitted: 01 Apr 2019

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME - MOD Tables

Author(s): DarthMarino
rascal
Lovthatapex
Destruk
Manufacturer: Gottlieb
Year: 1982
Permission to MOD?: Yes, without approval

This is a mod to rascal's recent VPX conversion of Caveman.  It started as a reskin with better graphics but I ended up replacing and reworking many of the elements. Thanks to rascal for permission to upload this version.

Mod features:

-Complete overhaul of the graphics and playfield lights.
-Added sounds such as ball rolling, wall hits, etc.
-Reworked Vari-Targets with correct scoring and functional WOW lights.
-Updated targets, posts, rubbers, etc.
-New desktop background with all functional lights.
-Slight physics tweaks.

Usage notes:

Arrange the video game so that the score is cut off by the top of your screen as shown in the photos of this post. The scores are shown in the background for desktop users and on the backglass for cabinet users with the appropriate file. Use the arrow keys to control the caveman in the video game.

To play with Extra Ball and Match options, press F6 and select the appropriate settings under Video Bonus Item and Game Mode.

The ROM will sometimes crash Visual Pinball shortly after loading the table.  Once you have a game going, you should be in the clear.

Most sites won't host the ROM since it is from Gottlieb.

Okay. Scratch checking back on the table page, otherwise, I'll always be late to the party...

I shall move my concerns with the table over to this thread, so I am able to follow it, and receive notifications.

Gravity issues. Crashing issues. Here for the updates!

(Better keep it all in the table-specific thread, rather than hopping to and fro :P)

Okay so, this just in!

So. I decided to download the previous version of Caveman. (The one of which you have modded).
And yeah... the graphics are lacking. And I see what you mean about the gravity on that version.

But, bizarrely enough, the crashing issue just wasn't present at all.

I played a few games. And the only issues I had were:

1: After bashing quite a few dinos in a row (Like 3 waves of them without leaving the maze), the video game's colours went berserk. (See image)
http://vpforums.org/...anttohappen.png

2: I couldn't make out any of the lights.

Good thing I was capturing footage!

But it seems these issues are purely cosmetic. And the crash issue wasn't present at all.

I will send you an update table to see how the physics are.

Very strange that this table crashes and the other doesn't. What are the specs of the computer you are using?

The colors are correct.  That's basically a new level in the video game after you bash all the triceratops.  It looks wrong at first but you get used to it.

Okay. For the sake of the userbase, I'll make this post public.

The specs of my PC are as follows:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
System Model: Doesn't say
BIOS Ver: 04.06.05
Processor: Intel® Core™ i3-3220 CPU @ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.3GHz
Memory:  4096MB RAM
DirectX Ver: DirectX 11

Display 1

Name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip Type: GeForce GTX 650
DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC

Approx Memory:  2744 MB
Display Mode: 1920 x 1080
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor

All DirectX features enabled

Display 2 is the exact same to Display 1

In regards to the table update, the physics are good, as discussed in messages.
And we cleared up the 'graphical bug' with the video game, being different levels in the game.

But yes.
The older version just doesn't crash at all.
It's only your version that seems to have that issue for me.

I can however, point out that when I launch the table, a prompt box appears saying "This table was saved with Version 10.6, you may have problems running/playing it".
I am apparently running Version 10.4.
Even still, I get that prompt box with the older version. And no problems.

Is it worth me upgrading to 10.6? If so, where would I find it?

BIG THANKS!

It is worth upgrading!!

Find the newest VP10.6 beta here added as attachment in first post...

https://www.vpforums...showtopic=41180

Simply copy contents into your Visual Pinball folder, and when it asks to overwrite, click yes.

(You will know it's in correct folder when it asks you to overwrite.)

If you don't feel comfortable using a beta version, you can download the official VP10.5 stand alone version, and use same instructions from above.

Find VP10.5 here...

https://www.vpforums...&showfile=11572

Make sure you download the VPinballX5_Minimal.zip, as there will also be previous versions available on same download page.

Also check here if you are interested in updating you VPinMAME to newest beta...

Find in first post added as attachment..

https://www.vpforums...ic=27063&page=1

There may be even newer version of VPinMAME beta over at VPU in there VPinMAME beta topic provided by CarnyPriest.

Hope this helps you.

Hey! I didn't see the reply!

I'll go grab that 10.6 beta, and give it a whirl with Caveman later!

Much appreciated, Xenonph!  :Worship:
