File Name: Rollercoaster Tycoon (Stern 2002)

File Submitter: jpsalas

File Submitted: 10 Nov 2018

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME Recreations

Author(s): jpsalas
Manufacturer: Stern
Year: 2002
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, without approval

Based on the Stern table from 2002.
This time was a solo project, so no others to blame than me if something is wrong :)
The playfield isn't 100% perfect, but it is good enough. Playfield and plastics are 4k in size.

**spoiler** There is a surprise for you in October :D

Excited to see you releasing this one. Played it for the first time in Bergen this summer and I had a lot of fun. Ran out of allowed pinball time by the wife so now I'm soon able to continue exploring this table. Haven't really learned the rules yet so all the fun stuff is to come.

Thank you once again Juan !

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

A very good table. I just think it's scary that the ball drains faster when the troll is active.

Can anyone tell me how to make speech volume higher? I was able to get into the service menu--found how to make the bumpers louder, but couldn't find anything on getting the speeh louder. There seems to be no tutorial on volume adjustments for gottlieb tables. I played this table a lot in vP9 and don't recall having sound issues. Thanks in advance

Played it and instantly love it!

Some strange thing though:

From some reasons I made a side-by-side comparison of JP's screenshot and mine. And I found, that the table is rendered remarkably different on my system. I see, that in JP's preview, objects seem to cast shadows (best seen on the troll's mouth, the playfield DMD, the lights on the backwall area and the ramps) and 3D objects are rendered differently on my system. I am still on VPX 10.5 (official). Do you guys think, that's what makes the difference or do you think something is broken on my system??? Or anything else. I don't remeber anything itroduced for 10.6, that could cause this, but I like a lot more, how it looks at JP.

Btw: Screen Space Reflect is turned off, I tried turning it on, but there is no difference.

I installed the table, but the flippers won’t work. Didn’t understand the ClarkKent settings on the flippers. Please help.

Bob,

This is a Stern table.   Volume adjusted through coin door buttons and DMD

Ambient Occlusion settings are different, would be my guess. So you might have it set to completely off or no dynamic AO.

@toxie: thanks, yes it seems to be related to AO. I have checked 'enable' in Vid prefs and the result was more like JP's look, but not the same. But results differ for me depending on if I set the table AO options to default or on (which I would expect to make no difference). On: unplayable stutter. Default: no stutter looking ok.

Note: I have to set AO disable to all my tables to get a stutter free game play (GTX 970, 4k display).

I'll fiddle around more tomorrow...

You need the new vpinmame. The table has fastflips turned on, it has nothing to do with ClarKent flipper settings. If by any reason you don't want to update vpinmame, then you need to change the line 26: Const UseSolenoids = 2, and change that 2 with 1.

Played it and instantly love it!

Yes, I'm using Ambient Occlusion enabled, even the "Update in-game" option. This gives me nice shadows on dynamic objects, such as flippers and ball. That's the reason I don't use extra shadows on the ball and flippers since I already have that. My computer is powerful enough to run with that on, and I also use Brute-force 4x SSAA. I also have the ScreenSpace Reflections on, and Reflect Dynamic Elements also on. I use a single monitor, without B2S. That may be a reason why I can run with everything on without stutter. I also run my monitor at 144Hz, and I limit the frame rate/Vsync to 1, which gives me 144 fps with a resolution of 1920x1080.

The AO Enabled and the "Update in-game" turned off, should not give any stutter, as the shadows are only rendered once at the start of the table.
