File Name: Cheetah (Stern 1980)

File Submitter: jpsalas

File Submitted: 24 May 2018

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME Recreations

Author(s): jpsalas
Manufacturer: Stern
Year: 1980
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, without approval

Based on the Stern table from 1980.
Thanks to StrangeLeo and Kalavera for the pictures of the real table.
Light numbers taken from Destruk/Lander table as they are not described in the manual. I also added the backdrop lights.
I have redrawn the playfield & the plastics, but I kept the animals and girls from the real table.

I have changed the default rom to use the cheetah2, which allows you the bonus shot just once per ball. The original rom had a flaw where the bonus shot (left lane) kept lit after collecting the bonus, so you could hit the lane again and again and collect the bonus again. So that made the game not so fun anymore :) And if you are in the mood you can change the rom to cheetah1 which will let you collect the bonus at the left lane just once per game.

You may change the rom in the script:

'Const cGameName = "cheetah" 'original ROM
'Const cGameName = "cheetah1" 'bonus shot 1/game
Const cGameName = "cheetah2" 'bonus shot 1/ball
'Const cGameName = "cheetafp" 'free play

You just keep releasing awesome recreations, thanks.  Do you have any more resources for grand lizard?  I have been learning how to convert vp9 to vpx, but as everyone says its all about the resources.  I think I might try to buy the plastics from marco just  for a build, but thought I would ask.  Thanks

I do not have better images than the ones I used in my table. I think someone made a mod (or a new version) with better graphics, but I don't remember which one of the mods :)

I guess it has to be with you using a B2S and has changed the script, maybe changing the variable "VarHidden". I also see that light is not in the aReels collection. Try version 1.0.1 and see if it is fixed :)

Thanks for yet another great table JP. First class, as always!

Quick tip: if anyone's sensitive to the constant high pitch ping during the game, try ROM cheetahb.zip available from the Universe..

Just right Click on the "Shoot Again" Field on Editor - Backdrop, and set to Collection "Reels", or anything like that ( not at the Cab now )

OK, JP already fixed this

Thank you guys for this wonderful table. I just love the older Stern tables. I must say JP. You've done a great job in both game play and playfield re-draw. Big thumbs to you, Kalavera and StrangeLeo. I played this, sopranos and safecracker yesterday until my feet hurt too much. Buying myself a bar stool now :)

I think I will change the strength of the right kicker just slightly. From the games I played it seems to almost always hit the 5th drop target and that is unfortunate since those targets, if dropped in order will give you extra points. I'm sure that this happens on a few real tables where the kicker is starting to wear just a little bit. I haven't looked at many youtube videos but it seems that a restored table would send it slightly above the 5th one.

As I said. I love it !

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

Yes, maybe that kicker should be stronger :)

UPDATE

4.0.0 Updated 18.9.2022
- Updated to my VPX7 physics
- cleaned up and deleted unused graphics & reduced the size of the table
- Added my VPX7 LUT changer to darken the table (hold down LEFT CTRL while change with RIGHT CTRL). Including GI brightness adjustment. Use the LUT changer together with the day/night slider to give the table the level of darkness you prefer.
- Updated my mechanical set of sounds to a more "under the glass" sound, as people seem to like those kind of sounds better.
- Changed the Environment image to enhance a little the object shadows.
- Some small small script updates, like the Rolling sound and PlaySoundAt routines.
- Made the light inserts warmer.
- Added SSF sound commands.

I have changed the default rom to use the cheetah2, which allows you the bonus shot just once per ball. The original rom had a flaw where the bonus shot (left lane) kept lit after collecting the bonus, so you could hit the lane again and again and keep collecting the bonus again. So that made the game not so fun anymore :) And if you are in the mood you can change the rom to cheetah1 which will let you collect the bonus at the left lane just once per game.

You may change the rom in the script:

'Const cGameName = "cheetah" 'original ROM
'Const cGameName = "cheetah1" 'bonus shot 1/game
Const cGameName = "cheetah2" 'bonus shot 1/ball
'Const cGameName = "cheetafp" 'free play

Enjoy this wide body from Stern :)
