Does anyone know what the refraction probe in vpx8 does?
I noticed it used in the newer vpw tables but didn't see what it was applied to

No idea.  There's a couple new things like the tonemapping I'm not sure how they work... hopefully, there's a resource at some point we can read up on how these should be used.

I think tonemapping drives the color translation by the image given?

Yeah... I had asked earlier if anyone knew about the specifics of the "reinhardt" and "McMapface" maps.

Some of the stuff i have to wait for the documentation.

right now i am more worried about stuff like vpx not wanting to save things to INI properly
has troubles corrupting POV settings to INI it seems as well as some other things

like does not remember if the editor was maximized or not and seems to just assign a random size to it and make it windowed etc

most of it pertaining to the editor

POV at least, i can fix, or have been able to so far

i just hit the key to restore defaults

some info in old POV data must not be translating well.

But, it's beta, if you cant afford for shit to break, you can't be running betas
cause new stuff always breaks before it behaves

Hi, yesterday I uploaded VPinballX-10.8.0-1635-da14fd0-Release-win-x86 on GitHub

I'm a desktop user, and I can't figure out how FS settings work using one screen

Here are settings with VP10.7

Pretty sure this is the new clear materials refraction you can see in some of the newer VPW tables. Police Force, for example... the ball image distorts when passing underneath the clear plastic ramps to simulate the actual visual refraction such materials would introduce in real life. The sword in the latest LOTR update is another example.

Well... I don't think anyone is disputing that... but we are mostly here to talk about the broken stuff in the beta, so no reason to have to justify it.

Hey Batch... in the video options there is a drop down box titled "view mode".  Do you have it set to desktop?

Thanks Drybonz, it wasn't set to desktop

I also have to select "Test Cabinet" in the drop down box titled "Run Mode Override"

Ok... I guess I haven't been paying attention... but yes, if you are on the fence about jumping in on the 10.8 beta, there are a bunch of heavy, incomplete changes in progress right now, so it's in for a penny in for a pound... if you don't want to proceed without 100% stability you need to hold off on this for a bit.

Hey guys. I'm having a very frustrating time right now. I am trying to get back into making tables, but I am having lots of problems when working on the cab, and I am about ready to throw in the towel.

Currently, I am running 10.8 beta 5, 32 bit DX. The editor is crashing so often when trying to work on tables that its barely usable. BTW, it did this on 10.7 too, so nothing has really changed there. I have a plenty powerful PC and video card, and I am running 64 bit windows 10.

It has been suggested to me that I should be running 10.7 beta 5 64 bit, but it simply will not work.

When I try to run it, I get this error:

untitled8.png

I simply need to have some stability here, and hopefully running 64 bit will do it if I can get it working. I have a desktop PC and it runs fine there, but not on the cab. Without the cab, I can work on tables.

So, what do I need to do to get 64 bit running on the cab? Till then, I simply cant make tables.

Im sure there is something weird on my end here, but it needs to be found. Thanks in advance.

Going to suggest do these two things 1st, to eliminate them if nothing else

Latest Visual C++ Redistributable Runtimes All-in-One May 2023 Download | TechPowerUp

install that, run installer bat as ADMIN

Download DirectX Redist (June 2010) from Official Microsoft Download Center

down load that, run the EXE to unpack it

then run setup exe

and then make sure you are not trying to replace any DLL's by having non VPX DLLs in the VPX folder, like dinput etc

dont try putting any MS dll's in the vpx folder

Hey guys!

Maybe this has already been addressed here and even resolved here, but the topic is getting too big and it's impossible to keep up...

First I want to praise the work done in this new VPX version, simply fantastic and you can see that the fluidity of the game has improved a lot, the difference is incredible, especially if you try to run it on a machine with reduced capacity... so thank you to the developers, you are too much!

Let's ask the question:

One point I noticed is that the reflections of objects and balls are very accentuated, there is a lot of reflection, so I have been opening table by table and reducing the values to reduce this high reflection.

The question is, is there a way to resolve this globally, or will I really have to do the process at each table?

Just now you will need to do it one table at a time, but since VPX is still in beta, so I should wait a little before starting changing tables. I have made a few VPX8 updates just to test the new possibilities and functions, and they work really fine. But now I'll wait a little before updating more tables, and also because mostly all the display errors have been fixed and there is no need for special versions for VPX8. But one thing still is this reflection, which could be toned down a bit so it is more compatible with the older reflections.  I guess vbousquet will not need too much time to tone it down a little bit :) I guess if people ask him, he will do it :)

Maybe not

the reflections are OK themselves

Some old tables just have values that are sometimes too high in the new reflections engine

we used to have to set them really high to get much.
Those are the only old tables i run into that look a bit off

the ones with reflections set really high

What i do wish though, is that i could set reflections on an individual object, since reflections are dynamic

be nice to have an over all lowish reflectivity, but then set a very mirror like object to be higher

That would be a cool feature
