Hey randr,

I am decent in photoshop, but I have no 3d modeling experience.  Any chance of a tutorial in layman's terms for people wanting to get into 3d modeling for VP?  Maybe we can make a small army of VP 3d modelers out there  :dblthumb:  Thanks for all you guys hard work and cannot wait to play the table

Those models are not modeled by hand. They were done with a special tool which can create 3D models out of a sequence of images. If you like to start modeling check out blender. It's free an you find a lot of tutorials on the web how to create stuff.

I have no idea what i'm doing to be honest.

learning as I go! i'm not 100% satisfied with the results and hope to make these better!

these are for testing to see if the will even work so when I learn how to refine these the final models should be much better!

Really looking GREAT Scott. I think those are the best models created in VP to date for sure.

I am truly amazed at what this last year has brought to VP...With all the newer guys and the skills they have brought, it has really accelerated the potential here.

In 2 years time, it will be amazing to see what will have been accomplished. Thanx for your work!

Maceman

ps: The more VP modellers the better!!!

This is going to be a very model heavy table.

Now that Fuzzel has added the prerendering option for models which should reduce any performance hit I've decided to really use quite a few meshes.

Here is my plan.

All toys will be models some prerendered.
Pop bumpers will be models. With fading lights.
All pegs will be prerendered models.

If randr can make them the wire ramp rings will be prerendered models

The gi withh be the wpc 8 step fading gi. Done with alpha ramps.

I'm going to do the gi a little different and set the ramps at about 52 height so the gi will show on the ball as it passes through lit areas. Still in the testing phase on the gi as I need to figure out how to get the object shadows to look correct.

May possible be a very performance intensive table.

I'll swap some of these things out if it is to intensive so the toy models can look as good as possible

This will be awesome UW. It's a great pleasure to follow your progress on this table!

>>wire ramp rings will be prerendered models

This is where I started with models.  It always bugged me that there was no good way to do ramp rings.  Future Pinball wire ramps look so good because of the end pieces, the rings and the sphere mapping texture.  I've seen a few techniques for VP; but some tables just leave them off completely.  And the techniques I have seen, don't allow for taking a ring and rotating it or tilting it so it can be applied to the incline portion of the ramp.

Modeling rings in blender is almost trivial.  My rings can be rotated about any axis to accommodate inclines and bends.  The trouble I am having is with the texture and lighting.  The texture in VP is UV mapped.  And I can't make them look metallic.  So I bailed on the texture, and have made my rings a few shades of yellow, so they look gold.

I would be very interested in learning, how to achieve the best textures.

What do you think of strata foto?  I noticed its like 500$ ouch!  Are there any free apps out there that do the same thing with images?

Thanks Zoltar
