QUOTE (epthegeek @ Sep 19 2011, 01:14 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I studied up and did some experimenting with exactly what the various view settings mean/do, and though these visual aids might be helpful for anybody who hadn't read into the details. Maybe not. Probably for a lot of you guys this stuff is old OLD news, but I never paid much attention to layback until checking out this thread the other day. I knew more recent builds were using it, but that was all.

All you have to do to implement layback on most tables (that don't make use of reels) is 1) Lower the inclination and 2) Increase the layback -- until you find numbers you're happy with. Inclination of 10 and Layback of 75 seems to be a good rough starting point.

[color="#FF0000"]Inclination has to do with the starting angle of the entire view. 0 Degrees is directly overhead, 90 Degrees would be staring at the end of the playfield.

Like so:

For cabinet tables, lower angles on inclination make the flippers look better because you're looking more straight down on them. Just as if playing a real pinball table, your 'angle of view' of the front of the table where the flippers are is pretty close to straight down (depending on how you stand of course).

Without layback, this makes the back of the table look really strange. In real life, your view angle to the back of the playfield is drastically different, because you're in front of the machine, the farther back something is, the greater the view angle on it becomes. Layback skews the angle the farther back you go to give you a similar visual effect. If you leave the layback at zero, the entire thing is at the same angle as the inclination (making the whole view top-down as if you were hovering over the machine) - if you increase layback, it's as if you're skewing the back wall away from you and stretching the playfield along with it.

Sort of like this:

Those of you with cabinets with a recessed display that angles away from the glass like a real table does (usually) may not need to do anything with the FOV setting -- but in my case, the LCD is right under the glass, and parallel. Using a lower FOV to 'pinch' the back end of the playfield makes it appear to be farther away, and gives you the illusion of seeing the inside walls of the cabinet as you would in a real game (or do on a recessed LCD). This really helps me with perception of shots and angles, but I might be alone there.

Big thanks to Scott for bringing that change up - it's a night and day difference for me.

E, I like where your going with this thread but some of your definations are off.... you have the words inclination, and lay back mis-matched in a couple of your definitions.

Layback is one piece of the equation, with FOV and inclination-- the entire end result, I think the general term some are using is the "keystone effect".

I am happy to see games are finally being designed to take advantage of this "upgrade" to VP.

If some rendering (soft reflections) could be done in the black "pinch" areas I have a feeling it would add even more to the illusion of depth...

Congo, Thank you JP Salas, great table!!!
Side Note to everyone-- I did make some changes to the volcano to make it taller, its experimental so far, but I changed playfield piece (you can go to these by selecting script, then drop down menu) :
F27 Top, changed to 580 (increase)
F27a "same as above"
F27b "same as above"
F27c "same as above"
Also, lowered flipper strength down to .085 to make shots tougher / table slope to 8

incl- 12
FOV 45
LB 80
xy 270
x 1.32
y 2
x -220
y 550

I am getting a rail on the left hand corner that you cant see in the picture that, needs to be deleted out.

Many thanks for the settings Scott - they really do add depth - appreciate your efforts on these and would love to see your settings for other tables. I also applied the flipper settings and table slope change to make the shots tougher which is certainly better. They seem really weak but I am sure you have adjusted them close to the real table so I will stick with those. Did you also change the flipper speed by any chance?

thanks very much for the comments, and I did increase the flipper speed and decreased the flipper strength as noted above. I cant remember, what the settings are at the top of my head, still tinkering. When playing the real game, on occasion you should have balls not make it up the either ramp. They should not always go around like they have been shot out of a laser.

Indiana Jones -FS-Lord Hiryu-VP9-v1-2 HR

doctor who OzPinUW_FS v1.0

These are more Scott style perspective as they are 'deeper' tables with ramps, rather than the old EMs...

P.S. The Indiana Jones table has a very minor gfx glitch when these are applied - the ball in the plunger lane is half-cropped... still worth it for the proper perspective view though! wink.gif

Scott, if everything else looks right and the flippers still look a bit flat, try changing their height and rubber sizes to look the same as the real one.
Settings look pretty good on congo, smile.gif but the flippers dont match, they look too flat.
