I ran a test with Big Bang Bar FS on my rig with several versions of VP. It made a big difference when I used this graphically intensive table to test.
VP 915 official release 160fps
VP 916 r540 122fps
VP 916 r548 83fps
The same options were used in each version. Not sure if this helps.

Perhaps the options/OS you are using?
I'm using XP with no options except
* draw ball
* antialias
* hardware rendering on 915
and
* draw ball
* antialias
* hardware rendering
* region updates on the 916 builds.
Hmmmm.. That's all so super-weird.. How can this be so much slower for you guys and on 3 machines on my side always (slightly to moderately) faster on 99% of the tables?

FYI...
I notice about 50 to 60 FPS different between the last three releases of vpinball.. version vpinball540 runs the fastest so far.
