It may have to do with graphics and your processor speed. Anything less that a dual core processor may cause problems

An Nvidia 6200 GS is what I used for a while with VP9. USD $60 and I was rockin'!

Even better, you can get a 1GB 9800 GT for $135; should be good to go for almost all modern gaming and no VP ATI hang ups... wink.gif

Just got my real version of WIndows 7 yesterday, and did a clean install.

One thing I have found is there are a few things you want to do to get VP running smooth.

Mainly this is for the VPMame end of things.

When you unzip the whole VPMame folder tree to your drive, the first thing you should do before running the setup.exe to register the .dll, is to right click on the setup.exe, and press the "unblock" button on the preferences dialog. Also is a good idea to edit the permissions in the security tab, so that your user has full access to the file.

You should also do this for the "VPinMAME.dll".

Then run the setup.exe.

I did this in stages as an experiment, and before I registered and had set the .dll permissions, my CV table would run stuttery, with an anoying double looping of the rom sounds.
After I fiddled with the permissions, and re-ran setup.exe, to re-install the .dll, CV ran smothly and cleanly from then on out.

Scapino, I followed your suggestions and I have to say, I noticed a slight improvement of the situation, though the results are still far from ideal. But please note, I have Windows Vista, not Windows 7 - I don't know if it makes that difference. Thank you all the same!
In detail:
Taxi works relatively well at 640x480, save for the occasional slowdown in the more congested moments (for example, when all the lights begin flashing after you have sent the ball up the ramps several times in a row). At 800x600 the sounds begin to loop, but the ball movements are still appreciably fluid. The game remains fairly playable at 1024x768 too.
In LOTR, the game doesn't behave too badly at 800x600, but begins to show some "stuttering" at 1024x768. The sounds are always affected by that very annoying echo, so you hear words repeated three or four times. And multiball is still a mess!
Theatre of Magic remains unplayable even at 640x480.
Sometimes the ball looks strange, like it's partly transparent.
I tried these tables in fullscreen mode only.
I will keep experimenting, and try some other table.

I have a triple-core AMD processor, so we can rule out that explanation.

One other thing to try is to set in the properties for VP (rightclick VP exe), set disable desktop composition. This will turn off Windows Vista and 7 new Desktop Window Manager (which runs your desktop through the 3d acceleration on your GPU, and kicks windows into the old 2d mode. You'll notice this when you loose the transparency on your windows.

Now when you run VP you'll get a message saying Windows has switched to Basic mode. This is OK! This frees up your GPU to concentrate solely on VP, and not your desktop.

The should speed up your VP. This isn't nessisary with all video cards, just some, and in my experience it seems to have more to do with the drivers then the card.

Alessio...

You probably don't have the unblock button because you turned off UAC.

I have update every driver but not work.
Only 640 X 480 window mode work but not very well.
For me a question is ati driver for windows 7 instable for this moment.
I hope with the future update fix this problem.
NEW relaise vpmame ?!?!?!? When?!?!?!

I have important news to report...
I downloaded and installed the updated drivers for my ATI card. And now, LOTR and even TOM work fine! dblthumb.gif No more stuttering gameplay and looping sounds, everything runs smoothly, even at high resolutions!
I should have thought it before. It was the first thing to do. I do apologise blush.gif
But...
There are still problems.
NEW problems.
In Taxi, some of the lights look bad. For example, in the center of the table, Drac looks fine, but Gorby, Lola and Santa look bad when lit.
In Cirqus Voltaire, the flippers and the ramps look semi-transparent, like a filigree.
Tales of the Arabian Nights is even more curious: the right flipper behaves properly, while the left one is transparent and nearly invisible when in rest position, but it has a normal appearance when raised.
I've just read reports of similar problems in another topic: http://www.vpforums....?showtopic=3817
Any suggestions?

PS
Scapino, I forgot to tell you that your pinball recreations are top class! Thank you good.gif

My laptop that is running Windows 7 Home Premium, with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 has no problems at all with VP, or VPM. I havn't tried FP on it yet.

Everything (including my CV table) run smooth as silk.

I just tried JP's VP9 Cirques Voltaire, in VP 9, on my ATI laptop, and it runs fine, looks great, no visual anomalies, IF you turn off HW acceleration. With it on, I get the Z surface error, and the table does not even start.
