I really like the idea of using 12V solenoids for slingshots and some bumbers. Could anybody gimme a suggestion if an optocoupler board like the following one would be suitable to trigger them?

http://www.ebay.de/i...o-/390724399241

I simply ordered one to try it and will report if it works.

I use tons of those Sainsmart relay boards for all sorts of stuff, both vpin related and otherwise. They're excellent, especially for the price. And just an FYI, they're normally stocked by Amazon so no need to go the eBay route. The boards come in 2, 4, 8, and 16 relay bank configurations!

Sorry for the newbie question but was does this do and what other components do you need?   I assume you still need LEDWiz?

Double check are they closing circle by using LO or HI signal from controller.

@maestro300

You can use those relays with arduino ledwiz clone project - thats what Im aiming ;)

Don't worry, I also need some time to understand electrical basics. You need a relay to isolate/separate components. A relay board is the combination of a couple of relays combined on a single board. You have to isolate components because of their current (amps). Otherwise you would blow your LedWiz if ya toys need more than 500mA.

What does this mean?

There are two types of those relays (will try to explain under arduino):

1) activate by HI signal : 5VDV from arduino - thats what Im aiming

2) activate by LO signal: 0VDV from arduino

Those from links are controlled by LO signal. That means that you need to send from arduino 0VDC to "start relay" and 5VDV will "stop relay". If Im correct (im electronic noob) those wont work with ledwiz - table event send HI signal via ledwiz.

Oh f***, I thought it is more simple: closing one cycle of electrons (like LEDWiz is doing it), to switch/close a second one.

I ordered this board:

$T2eC16hHJGEFFmk53U(YBS,5tDFBv!~~60_12.J

http://www.ebay.de/itm/301000719756

It would be cool if the board allows a jumper switching for "all on/off". Than it would not be an issue. As far as I understodd the high/low switching:

  • Low: Relay is on if LEDWiz port is off.
  • High: Relay is on if LEDWiz port is on. (That's what I need.)

Please correct me, if I am wrong.

I want to control a set of these solenoids for my bumbers:

$(KGrHqZHJEkFJY(idcs0BSdGZW74sQ~~60_12.J

http://www.ebay.de/itm/251371161795

Hopefully everything works well. The first task is waiting, waiting and again waiting until my package arive from China :-).

Wha...? They most assuredly work with an LED Wiz, as I said. They're simply relay switches, just conveniently assembled. Switch toggles on signal, with terminals for NO and NC on each relay. So even if you're using LO signaling for whatever reason, you could just swap inductive loads to NC.

So what do you mean by LEDWiz clone?   I saw some information via google search but guessing this is a DIY LEDWiz?   What would be the benefit over a regular LEDWiz-- just cost?

I was told in a thread "over there" that you could use the usb Sainsmart directly with DOF no ledwiz needed... is that not true???

Hey guys, quick question !

By using such a relay board do you need diodes too ?

Okay-- so again I apologize but I am a bit confused on what DOF is in comparison to LEDWiz.  I know DOF is supposed to have near zero latency but no idea if this is something you buy or make.

DOF = software to control hardware connected to your computer via Ledwiz(or similar hw)

I did just to be on the safe side @ less than a dollar each is cheap insurance. The specs and features of the relay boards do state they have diodes built in but now I know they are built in cause I put them there

Yes, you have saismart usb, that can act like ledwiz, + like a booster board integrated :D
The biggest version has 8 ports
http://www.sainsmart...robotics-1.html
You also have 4 ports, 2 ports versions.
I am preparing the new version of configtool, that will support controllers like pacled64, sainsmart, and its respective amount of outputs, and dof support sainsmart usb in the upcoming version :)
I will add chime unit, bell, whatever possible in the tool.
The best controller candidate for our deae cabs is the pacled64, 32 outputs is outdated, we need 10 contactors, 10 independant flashers, and the rest, but we absolutely need a booster board for it, nothing can be plugged directly, max power is 20ma
So we need zebulon, if he can design booster boards, shields for pacled64 :)

Yup, Arngrim beat me to it. It's not the relay boards I posted above that can be used as an ledwiz alternative, but those robotics boards could do the trick. I believe swisslizard has already written a DoF driver for it.

And SteveTheGeek - definitely still put diodes on inductive toys like contactors. The relays are isolated from the ledwiz, but you could still burn them up.

Thanks a lot to all of you for the feedback.

By the way, any canadians here with suggestion on where to buy online some contactors that works well ? Or anything on ebay ?

And thanks for the Relay board hint, ordered one on Amazon today !

Thanks !!! :)
