I have yet to see a good color dmd on a virtual DMD screen.  Now that I have converted my PinDMD3 to a real screen, I want to play around with this.  Any suggestions on a rom/table to get.  Can I use the ******* editor at all.  All I have been able to get working is 4 color with pallete file.  This look kinda poor compared to a real ColorDMD game in some of my real pins.  I have seen some cool sample vids, but I have yet to get anything working.  Suggestions welcome, thanks

one of the best color roms for monitor are: (and pin two dmd also)
AC/DC
Star Trek LE
Metallica
Spider Man Vault
those 4 looks really good on a monitor but even better on the  pin two dmd

BUT there are some color roms which don´t work with Monitors (freezys Dll) like:
Shrek
Potc
T2
Super Mario
and some more

a colorDMD does not work with virtual pinball, only real machines. I'm not sure what the point of mentioning it is since we cant use it on virtual cabinets.

their are 3 methods we can use to add color to a DMD

1.  generic single pallet colors (pal files) as you mentioned the basic 4 color pallet with no color profile switching.

2.  Pinball Browser,   this method only supports SAM roms.  this program modifys the SAM roms,  this is why you have to patch your roms if you want colored SAM games

when you patch a rom,  you are basically cloning a rom modified by Pinball Browser.

3.  PintoDMD editor.,  this program DOES NOT MODIFY roms,  it creates stand alone editor projects.

if you read through this thread from the start,  you will noticed that you need Freezys dll in order to use the pal files with a PinDMD3/Monitor.

you can run the basic 4 color pal files and the Pinball Browser colored roms but;

PintoDMD editor projects DO NOT WORK on freezys dll or an LCD monitor.  you have to use the PintoDMD hardware.

the 6-7 pintoDMD colored projects mentioned on the above post will not work for you or anyone that has a LCD or PinDMD3.

I believe freezy had started looking into adding support and created a code branch last year, but unfortunately it looks like that has gone stale.  https://github.com/f...sions/issues/56

That seems about right. F1, make sure that use ext-dmd and color is set and I would expect it to work.

And - don't copy the dmddevice like Bambi suggests ! There is only one location and if you plan to use PinUp ... don't even touch the thing.

OMG, thanks guys my trouble was I didn't have the 4-color option in VpinMame checked (that was missleading I think).  Awesome!!!!! this is so cool.  Now if we could colorize older Williams Roms I would be in heaven (until the next big thing of course)

@thalamus he never said he is using pinup BUT if he wants to do so just copy the pinup dmddevice.dll like i suggested
i had a couple of guys who had problems with the dll when they were not at all places like i suggestet and after i helped now over 300 to set their VPin up via teamviewer i think it is correct ;9

@slydog unfortunately not all color projects work with freezys dll like 32a explained above. Hopefully freezys will update it tough

@Bambi : Your install recommendation is NOT compatible nor the recommended way of installing. You should update your documentation and start to install the correct way. Don't put not system dll files into windows system folders. Yes, I too have seen a few computers where that has been needed.  But, that is from guys that already have done stupid things to their computer and it is a last resort workaround NOT something you should do. Most of the time it can be fixed with a single Microsoft update. And that IS the recommended way.

dont expect many color roms any time soon... right now there are maybe 10ish... a few more if you have a pinTOdmd.... so even when freezy gets everything up to date, if he even is interested in doing so... then you might be up to 15ish.... unlike tables and b2s content... the color rom world is slow and far between to say the least... so enjoy what you have... in maybe 20yrs or so maybe the number of color roms will double...  30-40 maybe...  ;)

I am still holding out hope that one day ColorDMD will release a solution for VP where we can leverage all their efforts... in the meantime I really do enjoy the colouring efforts of the limited games we do have. I've tried a couple of times to wrap my head around the editor for pinTOdmd and just haven't sorted it yet... even if I do figure it out I'm not sure I've got the artistic skills to make the games look any good.

colorDMD will never be an option IMO... there real pin greed mongers... its unreal what real pin guys are willing to pay.... when you can build (not buy) a pinT0dmd for less than $100US
needing artistic skills to build the color roms.... nah... its a pixel by pixel process anyone can do that part, but will be VERY monotonous ..... its the ripping the rom and the assembly that seems to be where the issue is... no one has made a build a color rom for dummies.... but again the art part is a no brainer.... I've been talking about this for over a year, and nothing has gotten any better, just more excuses

I think your personal artistic skills may be underselling that side of the effort. I'm well versed on technical/computer software and I'm challenged by the editor... regardless of that though I'm confident if I do figure it out anything I could produce would look like a dogs breakfast compared to what you and the other artists around here could do.

On the ColorDMD front, I don't begrudge ColorDMD their margin's, they set a price, my decision on whether I want to pay it. I would certainly pay a pretty penny for a ColorDMD VPin solution with access to their full catalogue but I do appear to be in the minority. I do understand the sentiment though, the Vpin hobby is built almost entirely off the backs of people who give everything for quite literally nothing, it is an amazing group of contributors. On the real pin side it seems as if everyone wants to get paid. Though that is a tad unfair as everyone is way too much of a generalisation on my part, I've met and dealt with a pile of people who have given their time and in some instances parts for nothing too... it is just no where near as prevalent on that side of the fence.

New version released with full VNI support. Monitor and PinDMD3 users should now have the same features as PIN-2-DMD users. Many thanks to Lucky1 and DJRobX for helping me debug this.

There are a few other additions like built-in PinUP support. The full changelog along with the download can be found here.

Enjoy!

Sounds awesome, that means, now we "Monitor Users" can use much more "Color DMD" Files ?

VNI File, how we get this ? Are there some examples ?

@STAT : You find that there are a few color patches over at universe where there is not rom patch file but two rather small files - the regular pin-two-dmd.pal and a pin-two-dmd.vni.

Those two together is enough. Attack from Mars, Sopranos are just two examples of such archives.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.
