Obviously this will be a little while as I have to bake GM2 pinball first, but after that comes the touring album, GM3 Staring At The Crack, which is now fully mastered, and I will be releasing the album soon to mega. Full Wordpress page including lyrics:
Gwendoline’s Mission 3 – Staring At The Crack
This is the continuation of Travelling Still, the girls touring with faking dead, so the album will have a touring, live feel. This enables it to become a collection of original tracks and also covers drawn from my own musical career. The album is now complete with wav masters. I’ll get it up as MP3’s soon,
Lyrics:
Track 1 – Pot Of Gold (Originally performed by Martin Mortimer on the album ‘Blue’ – 2002)
[Verse 1]
Heading back to Newcastle
Coming home, I’m in town
Got to do the rounds of the pubs
Stopping by all the clubs.
The CBD and The Mercury
The Brewery and The Clarendon.
[Chorus]
But The Lucky, is home.
Yeah The Lucky is home
[verse 2]
Heading back to Newcastle
Coming home I’m in town
Driving by the foreshore
Stopping at Nobby’s
Who could ask for more
Walk on back down the mall
Got to answer the crown street call
[Chorus]
‘Cause The Lucky is home
Yeah The Lucky is home
[Bridge]
Doesn’t matter about the colour scheme
Just as long as the beer cold
Doesn’t matter where you’ve been
[Final Chorus]
‘Cause The Lucky is always home
Yeah The Lucky is always home.
[Outro]
Heading back to Newcastle
Coming home I’m in town
Track 2 – Clouds (Originally performed by Martin Mortimer on the album ‘Blue’ – 2002)
[Verse 1]
When you go away from here today
Don’t forget what your mother would say
Don’t get lost among the clouds in the sky
When you come down you’ll be wondering why
Why
[chorus]
You ran away from love
You ran away
Scattered like a frightened dove
You ran away
You followed the river down town
You ran away
Leaving me in the brown
Dust to rust
[Verse 2]
When you come back twenty years from now
We’ll meet up and ask each other how
Among the clouds we left our love to fly
With our regrets we’ll be wondering why
Why
[chorus]
You ran away from love
You ran away
Scattered like a frightened dove
You ran away
You followed the river down town
You ran away
Leaving me in the brown
Dust to rust
[Verse 3]
So hold on tight to what we have today
Don’t forget what your mother would say
Don’t get lost among the clouds in the sky
When you come down you’ll be wondering why
Why
[Chorus]
You ran away from love
You ran away
Scattered like a frightened dove
You ran away
You followed the river down town
You ran away
Leaving me in the brown
Dust to rust
Track 3 – Staring At The Crack
[intro]
Ok
This one’s about us
Kind of.
I wrote it while I was
Staring at the crack
[verse 1]
I’m leaning on the passenger door,
Steph is at the wheel.
Yumi’s on my shoulder
She asking how I feel
And I’m staring at the world
Through our broken windscreen
At a world that’s getting bigger
And I wonder who else has seen
[prechorus]
Us
[Chorus]
Staring at the crack
I forget all that we lack
I see a world that’s waiting
We arrive then keep on moving
[Verse 2]
Another town passes by
We pull over at the edge for fuel
The tour convoy spreads apart
As the highway sets the rules
I climb back in behind the wheel
As the sunrise hits the glass
This life feels so unreal
I hope it’ll never pass.
[prechorus]
Us
[Chorus]
Staring at the crack
I forget all that we lack
I see a world that’s waiting
We arrive then keep on moving
[Verse 3]
We’re coming to the next stop
I slow down past the cenotaph
We get pulled over by a cop
Who asks for an autograph
Finally reach the hotel
We’ve got the cash to stay
Enjoy a shower and a feed
Then we go on to play
[Bridge]
There are cracks everywhere
You just need to look past them
Don’t let the sunlight blind you
To the beauty they divide
When everything is perfect
You can’t see it for the gloss
So we just let the cracks be seen
And hope that they see
[prechorus]
Us
[Chorus]
Staring at the crack
I forget all that we lack
I see a world that’s waiting
We arrive then keep on moving
Track 4 – Growing Us
[Verse 1]
Sakura once told me
You can travel a long way
Without leaving the kitchen table.
See the world in a brand new way.
And while we travel around
I think I finally understand.
It doesn’t matter where or when,
But it matters how we land
[Chorus]
Some journeys happen while you’re sitting still.
Some journeys happen while you’re moving.
And growing up is learning that both are real journeys.
But Growing up is the biggest journey of all.
[Verse 2]
We live this road all four as one,
The band watched by all my mums
As we learn the things they always knew
And do the things they always do
Family, home, and carrying the flame
We’re still ourselves but not the same.
We are our home our family
Learning all that we can be
[Chorus]
Some journeys happen while you’re sitting still.
Some journeys happen while you’re moving.
And growing up is learning that both are real journeys.
But Growing up is the biggest journey of all.
[Verse 3]
I watch the cicada dry its wings
It seems to say so many things
The wipers sweep the rain away
As we drive through our lives today
With tickets sold and fans around
We relish in this life we’ve found
Together four of us will be
Yumi, Steph and Gwen and Dee.
[Bridge]
Growing us
The best we can
Just four girls
And an old white van
[Chorus]
Some journeys happen while you’re sitting still.
Some journeys happen while you’re moving.
And growing up is learning that both are real journeys.
But Growing up is the biggest journey of all.
Track 5 – Their Little Wolf Girl
[Verse1]
We pulled into Byron and the crowds were there
In Lunar Howl shirts with fake wolf ears in their hair
Are they here to see my mums?
The wolves are at the farm
Then they screamed for the queen of the tuktuks
I understood and waved my arms.
[Chorus]
I don’t have the ears or the shiny fur
But I’m still a wolf to them
My mums fans have adopted me
And my mission is their dream
I thought they wanted to see my mums
But it’s through them they know me
And are fans who are true of heart
And call us family
[Verse 2]
They’d followed the story all the way here
And now they’re following me too
These fans are mine as well as theirs
No matter what we do.
When they sang about the frozen north
And how they rescued me
The wolves invited all their fans
To watch who I could be
[Bridge]
Faking Dead waved from in the wings
Nigel said “they’re not here for me
They came to hear their wolf girl sing
So give them a show to see.”
[Chorus]
I don’t have the ears or the shiny fur
But I’m still a wolf to them
My mums fans have adopted me
And my mission is their dream
I thought they wanted to see my mums
But it’s through them they know me
And are fans who are true of heart
And call us family
Track 6 – Changing State
[Verse 1]
Rolled into Queensland and things got real
I watched the skyline grow from behind the wheel
We crossed a line and the world got wide
We left home somewhere on the other side
We turn to the right just after tweed
Follow the beach as the sun starts to bleed
The sky is scraped by the tower on our left
I smile to be here with Yumi, Dee and Steph.
[Chorus]
The tour arrived in the sunshine state
We wandered off but we can’t be late
Exploring this place with its buildings and noise
Four Sydney girls dodging Gold Coast boys
[Verse 2]
Surfers paradise and Miami Beach
Burleigh heads puts it all in reach
Fish and chips sitting the sand
Nobody stairs or says hey there’s that band
Nigel finds us, he’s smiling bright
He says “this is my home you should see it at night”
Then we all head in to the venue to play
My first tune in this new state today.
[Bridge]
The sun and the see and the good and fun
Four Sydney girls in the Queensland sun
My world keeps growing every where we land
Just me and my girls, a touring band.
[Chorus]
The tour arrived in the sunshine state
We wandered off but we can’t be late
Exploring this place with its buildings and noise
Four Sydney girls dodging Gold Coast boys
Track 7 – I’d Like You Home Soon (Originally performed by Martin Mortimer, on the album ‘late June’, 2001)
[Spoken Intro]
This little song is one my mums used to sing. It’s special, and I think Martin, who originally performed it, wouldn’t mind me playing it for you.
[Verse 1]
I just called so I could say
I miss you while you’re away
I hope you come home soon
[Chorus]
So I can say I love you
I miss you
So I’d like you home soon
[Verse 2]
I wanna hold you close again
Whisper in your ear remember when
Hold you and look you in the eye
[Chorus]
So I can say I love you
I miss you
So I’d like you home soon
[Bridge]
I miss you
So I’d like you home soon
I wanna tell you
You ring my bell you
You make me feel alive
I miss you
So I’d like you home soon
I miss you
So I’d like you home soon
[Verse 3]
I just called so I could say
I miss you while you’re away
I hope you come home soon
[Final Chorus]
So I can say I love you
I miss you
So I hope you come home soon
I miss you
So I’d like you home soon
I miss you
So I’d like you home soon
Track 8 – Touring Girls
[Verse 1]
We played again at the close of the show
Us and faking dead
The crowd was wild but we had to go
And get straight into bed.
Five AM the alarm goes off,
The roadies packed our van
We’re driving north to the Noosa show,
We’ll get there as quick as we can.
[Chorus]
We take turns driving to catch up on sleep
We take turns calling to the homes we keep
Each day a new place to share our little worlds
This is the life of four touring girls.
[Verse 2]
Sugar cane fields and ash like snow
Stubble burns as the harvesters go
We wind up the windows in the stifling heat
The sweet smelling smoke drifting like a sheet
Rolling by the beaches up to Noosa Heads
Find our hotel room with the comfy beds
But we have to get on stage, it’s time to go
No rest for the band we’ve got another show
[Chorus]
We take turns driving to catch up on sleep
We take turns calling to the homes we keep
Each day a new place to share our little worlds
This is the life of four touring girls.
[Bridge]
Doesn’t matter that we’re tired as we walk on stage
the audience is cheering, some are twice our age
This is our life now we’re touring girls
Never gonna stop we wouldn’t trade it for the world
[Chorus]
We take turns driving to catch up on sleep
We take turns calling to the homes we keep
Each day a new place to share our little worlds
This is the life of four touring girls.
Track 9 – Darwin or bust
[Verse 1]
We crossed mountains and forest and hit the dust
94 wheels taller than the van roll past.
We’re heading north and west where we’ve never been
It’s the longest nothing I’ve ever seen.
Crossing the border to the central north
And road trains dominate the dirt
It’s the furthest since we first set forth
If the van gives out this’ll really hurt
[Chorus]
Crocodiles and Kakadu
The things we thought we’d never do
We’re in the tropics north of Capricorn
Heading to Darwin and the band is born
On tides of heat and petrol cans
While those road trains roar on by.
[Verse 2]
It takes an age crossing the flat land,
but the road springs Alice on my driving hands.
It’s bang in the middle of the red dust bowl,
And that night into Tennant creek we roll
We sleep in the van, Nigel checks on us,
Rabbits cooked on a fire behind Faking Dead’s bus
By a laughing local with bare dry feet
Who crossed the dust just to come and meet.
[Chorus]
Crocodiles and Kakadu
The things we thought we’d never do
We’re in the tropics north of Capricorn
Heading to Darwin and the band is born
On tides of heat and petrol cans
While those road trains roar on by.
[Verse 3]
We pass through Katherine as the sun hangs high,
We eat lunch as we drive and roll on by
It feels so good to see the sea,
Darwin is saying hello to me
We’re there in time for a late afternoon
To see the town then a concert under the moon.
The crowd sits on blankets in the tropical air
And we’re so happy we’re finally there.
[Chorus]
Crocodiles and Kakadu
The things we thought we’d never do
We’re in the tropics north of Capricorn
Heading to Darwin and the band is born
On tides of heat and petrol cans
While those road trains roar on by.
Track 10 – Sun bled ocean
[Verse 1]
We left Darwin driving south then west
The people waved, that town is blessed
The red turned to rock then it met the blue
And the ocean killed the day like the mountains normally do
The colour splashed horizon seemed to stare right back at me
It was the most amazing sunset I think I’ll ever see.
[Chorus]
Sun bled ocean
A painter’s palette spilled
Sun bled ocean
And now my soul is filled.
[Verse 2]
The sun bled on the water
like an ice cube on a plate
The colours were incredible
and it made our dinner late
Sunset on the ocean seemed
a stranger thing to me
Than any other thing we’ve seen
but I’m glad it’s here for me.
[Chorus]
Sun bled ocean
A painter’s palette spilled
Sun bled ocean
And now my soul is filled.
[Verse 3]
We stayed there in Port Hedland
As the Pilbara shared its song
We might be the touring band
But the Pilbara sang it long
The rocks and sand and ocean
And trains of iron ore
Were magic in their stillness
As the evening reached the shore.
[Bridge]
The colours are a song of sight
A vision melody
And now I know It’s only right
I’ll carry them in me.
[Chorus]
Sun bled ocean
A painter’s palette spilled
Sun bled ocean
And now my soul is filled.
Track 11 –From Red To White
[Verse 1]
Headed south with the ocean to our west
With views like these we never need to rest
It’s like another country
So far from all I know
But if it ever calls me
I know I’ll always go.
[Chorus]
We watch the red fade to sandy white
The eucalypts welcome
In sun so bright
Fremantle’s ocean is welcome and blue
And Perth is waiting with a concert venue.
[Verse 2]
We jump out of the can and stretch our weary bones
Checking all the messages we missed on our phones
Then find a little cafe and stop for drink and cake
This town’s like a home you couldn’t fake
The waitress gets a signature
On a worn out Travelling Still
And then she waives our bill.
[Chorus]
We watch the red fade to sandy white
The eucalypts welcome
In sun so bright
Fremantle’s ocean is welcome and blue
And Perth is waiting with a concert venue.
[Verse 3]
We continue down to Perth with wind in our hair
Its nice to just enjoy the fresh air
Nigel is smiling as he waves us in
The van is parked and the gig is on
The waitress is there in the front row
Screaming and waving, fake wolf ears on show
[Bridge]
So far from home, the furthest we go
The tour has been the real show
Not us to them but them to us
Four girls in a van behind Faking Dead’s bus.
[Chorus]
We watch the red fade to sandy white
The eucalypts welcome
In sun so bright
Fremantle’s ocean is welcome and blue
And Perth is waiting with a concert venue.
Track 12 - Green Hills and Music
[Verse 1]
We wandered for days around the bight
Then the blue met the green what a stunning sight
Through rolling hills we travelled down
Past pretty fields and into town.
[Chorus]
The road to the sea winds on down
We laugh as the old van lurches
Now we find a festival town
We’re in the city of churches
The tour’s been the best
Decision we’ve made
And now we’ll sing
In cool Adelaide
[Verse 2]
We follow the bus to the festival site
A beautiful place lit up day and night
There are dozens of bands all there to play
Gwendoline’s Mission found their people today.
[Bridge]
The green and the blue
and vines covered in dew
Playing music in a slice
Of a perfect paradise.
[Chorus]
The road to the sea winds on down
We laugh as the old van lurches
Now we find a festival town
We’re in the city of churches
The tour’s been the best
Decision we’ve made
And now we’ll sing
In cool Adelaide
Track 13 – Set me free (Originally performed by Martin Mortimer, on the ep ‘Extras’, 2006)
[Spoken intro]
This is another old Martin Mortimer song. This was a single back around I think 2006. It’s a song to the heroes in our lives. I have a bunch of them, and I’m singing this for every single one. It’s called ‘Set Me Free’
[Verse 1]
Watching angels fly
In a clear blue sky
Glistening in your eyes
My heart breathes contented sighs
[Chorus]
This day is to me
The best it could be
One day you’ll see
Just how you set me free
Oh oh oh oh ohh
Ohh ohh ohh oh ohh
Oh oh oh, oh ohh
Ohh ohh ohh oh ohh
[Verse 2]
Bliss is with me now
I don’t even wonder how
Enough for me that you give
So in joy we may live
[Chorus]
This day is to me
The best it could be
One day you’ll see
Just how you set me free
Oh oh oh oh ohh
Ohh ohh ohh oh ohh
Oh oh oh, oh ohh
Ohh ohh ohh oh ohh
[verse 3]
I hear birds in your song
Though I know this won’t last long
Still it feels so good to me
To have you here next to me
[Chorus]
This day is to me
The best it could be
One day you’ll see
Just how you set me free
Oh oh oh, oh ohh
Ohh ohh ohh oh ohh
Oh oh oh, oh ohh
Ohh ohh ohh oh ohh
Track 14 – Tram Lines And Van Turns
[Verse 1]
Came down through the Dandenongs
And the city opened up
With all the rolling tramlines
I don’t know where to stop
[Chorus]
They turn right from the left lane.
The trams are in my way.
If you’ve been here you probably guessed
We’re in Melbourne today.
[Verse 2]
It’s a mix of old and new,
I see art everywhere
And every time I think
They really put that there?
[Chorus]
They turn right from the left lane.
The trams are in my way.
If you’ve been here you probably guessed
We’re in Melbourne today.
[Verse 3]
I finally find a spot,
In the middle of town
One random unpaid spot
Amid the traffic and sound
[Bridge]
Walking past Flinders St Station
A crowd stands in our way
I thought it was commuters
Till I saw wolf ears on display
The crowd cheered when they saw us
Then Nigel showed his face
He guided us the other way
And we all laughed at the pace
[Chorus]
They turn right from the left lane.
The trams are in my way.
If you’ve been here you probably guessed
We’re in Melbourne today.
Track 15 – Taking Faking Home
[Verse 1]
The tour turned towards the north
We had plenty of time before the fourth
When the first of our gigs in Sydney would
End this little tour that could.
I begged and pleaded and got my way
That’s why we’re all headed for Wolf Haven today
[Chorus]
We led the convoy for the first time
Faking Dead’s bus behind us in line
I’m taking them all to meet my mums
We’re all smiling as we dream of good times to come.
[Verse 2]
Every turn took me closer to them
My mums, my people, my wolves, my fam.
Under the stars I turned into the gate,
Knowing they’d be fine with it being so late
My mums all came out and I ran to their arms.
Nigel looked lost, he hadn’t been around farms
Then he looked at their ears and their shiny fur
He said “wait! It’s all real? I thought they’d look like her!”
[Chorus]
We led the convoy for the first time
Faking Dead’s bus behind us in line
I’m taking them all to meet my mums
We’re all smiling as we dream of good times to come.
[Verse 3]
We hung out in the barn and two days became three
The roadies and Faking all camped near the trees
Three bands jammed together and the rafters were full
With the spirits of music and the desk caught it all
When we finally left it seemed the pack had grown
And the dead understood why we’re never alone
With Sydney to go the tour will end
But for everyone here home’s around every bend
[Bridge]
Nigel said “I’m glad we came,
And I’m kind of glad the wolves are tame.
I never guessed it’d all be real,
But I’ll stay faking, don’t want dead to be real!”
[Chorus]
We led the convoy for the first time
Faking Dead’s bus behind us in line
I’m taking them all to meet my mums
We’re all smiling as we dream of good times to come.
Track 16 – Suddenly Sydney
[Verse 1]
We took the van through Wollongong,
To visit Steph’s Mum and Dad
Then Princes highway didn’t seem so long
To reach the Sydney pad
The promoter paid for a top hotel,
to keep us for two weeks
And we settle in for a string of shows,
But make time to visit the vic
[Chorus]
Suddenly in Sydney
but still we are away
A holiday at home
We work and then we play
[Verse 2]
Collect our mail at the post office
Go to the bank and real estate
We need to find ourselves a flat
And the album sales were great
We pay a deposit on a place
Feels like something we’ve won
They agree to let us move straight in
Before the sale is done
[Chorus]
Suddenly in Sydney
but still we are away
A holiday at home
We work and then we play
[Verse 3]
The final show’s a sellout crowd
But soon semester starts
Six months off is almost done
So we move in to celebrate.
The faking dead come around for drinks,
The neighbours are all stunned
But we keep the noise down and invite them in
And everyone has fun.
[Chorus]
Suddenly in Sydney
but still we are away
A holiday at home
We work and then we play
Track 15 brings the girls back to Sydney and completes the tour supporting Faking Dead. That concludes GM3 which I feel turned the tour into a lovely story of growth for the girls. All lyrics and music copyright M Mortimer.
