I see that VPX tables are being posted that support not just VR but also Mixed Reality.

Could someone describe the VPX MR experience?

Ex: Will it just render the playfield and backglass onto my VP Cabinet, so everything else is the real world?

If it only renders a full pinball machine: Can I render it directly over my VP Cabinet, so I can interact with the virtual cabinet, as if it were a real cabinet?

Thanks for your help!

Hi,
For the tables that support 'Mixed Reality' or 'augmented reality' (AR). It's up to the table creator what you see overlaid onto the real world.
The versions I have tried use the Virtual desktop VR app and the virtual desktop streaming app on the PC. Virtual desktop allows you to pick a color that you would like to use as a mask for the compositing of the VR table. For example, if the color chosen is pure green then playing the table in VR (streaming through virtual desktop) you would be able to see the real world wherever pure green shows up in the VR world.
If the builder of the table created just the playfield and a VR version of the backglass in a green void, then that's all you would see overlaid onto the real world.
You can also Mod the table itself and remove the VR elements you don't want to see.
It's a fantastic way to play virtual pinball and currently as close to the real thing as you can get.
Problems I have encountered are;
Aligning the table with your cabinet can be troublesome. You need a decent PC to run visual pinball in VR + passthrough and the playfield doesn't always sit solidly in the real world, it can shift slightly while you play. (This may only happen for me as I don't use a killer PC in my cabinet)

Here is an example of my MOTU CE (on FP-BAM) running in VR and MR. It's the same idea for VP.

For MR, the VR Room is simply a big sphere with a single colour. The player needs to run in Virtual Desktop and choose passthrough and choose a colour that matches what the MR sphere is using. That colour gets keyed out and you see the real world, and the game tracks movement with the real world, etc.

@timkingblue and @TerryRed: Thank you for your replies!

At least I now understand the concept.

There is no way my current PC (10th Gen I5 and a 1650) could drive a VR or MR headset, but I'll have some things to think about when I get around to upgrading it.
