Manufacturer: Other - Pinball
Year: 1975
Permission to MOD?: Yes, with approval

These 3 tables were made by Petaco (Recel) in 1974/5.
They are more or less the same table, but there are some differences:

Jake Mate:   1 player, replay only
Check:          2 players, replay and/or extra ball
Check Mate: 4 players, replay and/or extra ball

Options in the script Apron card in English or Spanish, 3 or 5 balls, Special or Extra Ball
As default the tables are configured like this:

Jake Mate:   5 balls, Spanish cards
Check          3 balls, Spanish cards, Extra Ball
Check Mate: 5 balls, English cards, Special

There are some differences in the rules:
Jake Mate: bumpers turn on when all the drop targets are down
Check & Check Mate: bumpers turn on with the central target and the upper lane

Jake Mate: The drop targets do not reset from ball to ball, only at the next ball after obtaining the special
Check & Check Mate: drop targets reset after each new ball.

Jake Mate: Tilt penalize the game
Check & Check Mate: tilt penalize just the ball

Jake Mate: The KING target is not a drop target, but a stand up target, and it is used to get the special
Check & Check Mate: the KING is a normal drop target. Special is on the upper lane (and outlanes too like in Jake Mate)

Thanks to:
akiles50000: playfield and plastic graphics
pedator: backdrop graphics and directb2s files and for his patience testing the table :)

In Check and Check Mate,  I forgot to change the image of the plunger plastic from "plastics" to one of the apron images. You can do that yourself or simply redownload the table :)

Thanks for the work. Those tables are very attractive and entertaining to play. Personally, I find Jake Mate more fun because it has rules that make progress easier. Check is the hardest to play because it has tougher rules. And Check Mate is good for competing with multiple players in a game for points.

UPDATE on Jake Mate

1.0.1 Updated 23.09.2024

- fixed a small bug, not resetting the drop targets after obtaining the special, when hitting the KING.

This was after consulting with pedator. The drop targets should have raised at the next ball, but we didn't feel the target could give you endless credits :) Yes, I know we are bad :)

I noticed a bug on the last couple tables Jake Mate, Check Mate, and Check. The match number 00 appears when you start a game. I had to find the clear_match sub and change the line to controller.b2ssetmatch 0 (from 100).

Thanks! I'll fix that in my next revision.

edit: I have re-uploaded the tables with this small change, mostly for future downloads, but I haven't changed the version number.

Hi JP, you're a lucky man to be born in Spain, so many different and beautiful pinball machines !

Funny thing, the king looks like Lemmy from Motörhead !  :D

I did a backdrop for your table CHECK from PETACO, and I have a question about balls in game.

When I open the "Backglass" view in VPinball, I can see you did lights for 5 balls (1 2 3 4 5) in the left lower corner.

In the Script, Line 2182, I inverted the numbers "3" and "5", and it seems to work, I now have 5 balls to play.

2182    If x = 1 Then BallsPerGame = 3 Else BallsPerGame = 5

Is there a change in the behavior of the table ? (except getting higher scores !  :D ).

Here is my backdrop

Thanks for the backdrop :)

You can change the number of balls with the F12 menu :) And the difference in the game is that it is harder to get a replay when playing with 5 balls.

Thanks for the information, I just understood I was very late with VP10.8  :(

So, now, I can set many things with the F12 menu.

It seems hard for me to understand how VPinball works now, so many new things to learn.

Just wait when 10.8.1 comes :) All the config menus, like the display preferences, are not there anymore :)

I remember you did a topic (or a file) named "how to build a VP10.8 table" or something like that, but I don't know where to find it anymore.

I remember you did a topic (or a file) named "how to build a VP10.8 table" or something like that, but I don't know where to find it anymore.

I made the tutorial when building this table:

Shooting The Rapids (Zaccaria 1979) JP_VPX8 + tutorial - VPForums.org

and the tutorial is in the download as a separate file.

Thanks JP, I'd like to convert the few tables I did to VP10.8, but I don't realy know where to start.

Hope that when VP10.8.1 come you won't have to update all your tables !  :)

You don't need to convert ANY vpx table from one to another Version.
You can use the different vpx exe's Side by Side.
A very good helper for that is Jarr3's excellent vpinballx.starter.
