File Name: Roller Coaster (Gottlieb 1971)

File Submitter: Mustang1961

File Submitted: 29 Sep 2023

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME - MOD Tables

Author(s): Loserman76
Hauntfreaks
Manufacturer: Gottlieb
Year: 1971
Permission to MOD?: Unspecified

Initial announcement from Jeff:
Artwork done by Hauntfreaks
others to thank: GNance, JPSalas, Pinuck, hauntfreaks, Borgdog, Arngrim
in addition to the "standard" keys (typically "1" to start game and "5" for coin), I've added "3" as another coin input and "4" for coin and auto-start game (like I recall the dime slots generally were) to simulate 3 coin slots
when game is not in progress, holding down left flipper for about 3-5 seconds will bring up the options menu. left flipper selects item, right flipper changes option.
I've also included shadows for the ball and flippers. If you want to turn them off look for these lines at the beginning of the script:
Const ShadowFlippersOn = true
Const ShadowBallOn = true
change to false if you want either of the shadows not showing on your tables

My view on Roller Coaster: I played the game ~ 1974 in North Italy on holidays. I remember how amazed I was with the ball tracks. Today I offer you my Version 1.0a. After the criticism for the BG at Circus I experimented with light gradients for the Roller Coaster letters. I have made a mix of lamps, snippits and lighted letters.

GAME/PLAYFIELD

- new game physics
- new POV for cab users
- outer bumpers wired in parallel - thanks to kiwi
- lighter pointer turn for more game fun
- flipper caps without the black spot - thank to MRT32
- slight layout changes in order to reduce ball losts
- new material and picture assignment for the sheet metal - thanks to JPS
- rolling ball sound level adjusted
- many new (nearly all) sounds
- all object sounds now in operation
- new timing for ball release - now after rotator sequence is completed and the score motor runs to stop
- when the game is switched on and in game over state all players score reels are now illuminated

BACK GLASS
- rolling score reels with internal illumination from above
- score reel illumination with single bulbs instead of snippits, appears more natural to me
- score memory: when you leave the table and reload it the score of the previous use will be indicated
-> attention: I changed the nv ram concept in order to implement this functionality, if you have still a nv ram in the user- folder delete it or replace it with the nv ram you find in the zip file (it is the RollerCoaster_71VPX.txt), otherwise the table will crash when loading the 1st time.
- no click sounds from the BG anymore, no interference between BG and game sounds
-> thanks to Jarr3 for his sound removal tool for BGs

- ZIP contains game, BG file, nv ram (RollerCoaster_71VPX.txt), BG- and PF- pics for cab users

All this in kind tribute to Jeff Whitehead.

Nicely updated Christian but you need to set a material for the side rails. I use plastic with an image and changed the lockdown bar to same. One other silly thing is a ball can get stuck on the rotating pointer. See my pic. I was able to side nudge to get it off though. Thanks again for updating this fun table!

Hi Cliffy,

thank you your reply and review. I play cab, so I do not see lockbar and siderails.  - When the ball get stuck like shown you can adjust more nudge force at line 460 and on. I have had this flaw as well but was unable to solve this problem. But it happens very seldom, I can stand it. One kick from the side and the game continues ... like in amusement halls 50 years ago  :) .

Best Greetings, Christian.
