Hello Mates!

First post.  Started with the vpin hobby about 6 years ago but really got into it about a year ago.

I have a question - I think it would be cool to have the pinball be an 8 ball in Eight Ball DeLuxe.  Similar to how Terry Red makes the BB-8 ball in Star Wars DSA and Sonic the Hedgehog as the ball in Sonic Pinball Mania.

Anyway, I gave it a good shot.  I tried stickers, the ball itself, a white ball, a black ball.  You name it.   I have a grasp of what needs to be done, however, I'm not able to get the results I want.  The "milkiness" that is described as what you get in logo mode seems to be in the white circle of the 8 ball when NOT in logo mode no matter what I try.  Screen shot is attached.

Also, the only way I can get even close is to make the ball black.  A white ball shows no sticker.

Any advice?  Thanks!  And thanks to all the authors!!!  I'm continually blown away by the quality of your work and the dedication to your craft.  Truly works of art!

Dave

Have a look at how the soccer ball is produced in this table.

https://www.vpforums...showfile=16273#

So the decal texture would likely need to be 2:1 ratio and the 8 will need to be positioned on the middle of the horizon line of the image. Use a similar black texture for the main ball image as what was used for the soccer ball.

Edit:

Ok...  after some experimenting I can now see the problem you are having and a solution.

For some reason VPX treats any pure white in the decal a little strangely, resulting in that weird fringing and milkiness. Unsure if this is a known bug or an intentional feature (perhaps white becomes 50% transparent or something for an intentional reason)?

The solution is to not include pure white in the decal and instead make it slightly grey. Here's an example of the output and further below is the decal texture I made, hopefully you can see the white is actually grey. Also make sure your decal is 2:1 and your 8 is positioned in the middle of the horizon (anywhere along the horizon should work) to prevent distortion when it is wrapped.

No problem. By the way if anyone is finding the black ball still looks a little grey, make sure that "Logo Mode" is disabled for the ball decal.

Dulansey, not sure if you did this but if you export the "CBallB" texture from the Flipper Football table linked above and import it as the ball texture then it adds a nice extra shine to the ball.

Hi guys,

I tried importing the new 8-ball image in the image manager but the ball doesn't rotate the way the soccer ball does. Am I missing something?

Thanks

Technically, shouldn't it be a white cue ball instead of the 8-ball?

Perhaps you replaced the ball texture instead of the decal texture. If you are experimenting with the Flipper Football table then replace the "socctex2" texture in the image manager with the one I supplied above.

Good point, although the 8ball looks a bit more interesting.

8 ball in Eight Ball DeLuxe.

I need to get this table as I used to play it IRL . Maybe one of the first to speak?

So, the ball exchanges ... yeah, this one (I might go with a white cue-ball after all), the soccer ball in Flipper Football is a good call-out. I think the Loc-Nar in Heavy Metal was clever also.

Ah yes, after a little more experimenting, I went into the editor/options and changed the ball image and decal.

Thanks guys for teaching this old dog a new trick.

...

Gorgar was the first pinball for sale with speech. It beat EBD by a couple years.

Cool.

I got Black Knight and Flash Gordon recently (others I played IRL). They are some other early "speech enabled" machines. But listening now ... it's pretty-rough and barely speech .

If we are allowed to upload files for the ball and sticker I'd be happy to post here.  I might even go a little crazy and start doing other machines too!
