MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 PINBALL PERIL
(A Visual MOD of JPSalas Polar Explorer)

If you have never seen MST3K before you might be missing out on one of the greatest TV shows ever made. Especially if you grew up in a household like mine where the family would put on some bad movie and crack jokes at what we were watching unfold onscreen. This is the basic premise: A Man and his robots forced to watch bad movies in space by some evil scientists. Their only defense: Split second timing and wicked sense of humor.

This table is built upon JP's great Polar Explorer table by Taito. It utilizes the same setup and ROM. I kept the gameplay pretty much the same as in Polar Explorer with some minor adjustments here and there.

The table script looks for 19 audio soundtrack files in the Music folder. You can look to the Media Pack download on how to add the soundtrack files or else use your own music. Just be sure to name your files "MST3K_01.mp3, MST3K_02.mp3, etc." The files should be placed in VP "Music" folder.

I attempted to script off the audio from Polar Explorer. Since scripting isn't my forte - I might not have done this correctly (someone I'm sure can steer me in a new direction if I did this incorrectly) But it works on my setup. This also seems to turn the audio off on Polar Explorer as well. So yeah, as I say: Not sure I did this correctly. If you have Polar Explorer as one of your tables you might have the audio playing on both - which isn't intended.

Many thanks to JP for all his great contributions to the Pinball community. So nice that he allows me to do these MODs after he put so much work into the originals.

Once Again: As with all my tables - My personal machine is a single screen setup. I build my tables with the score either on the playfield or within the Apron. With MST3K I'm having two versions with DMD on the Apron or with it (awkwardly) placed on the backdrop. Download the version that suits your setup best.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy playing MST3K Pinball Peril!

Got a friend who loves the series. Linked him to the table. Great job on this pin! :D

I've had the table crash on me both in Polar Explorer (which it's based) and for me a restart fixes it. But you could delete the ROM and try installing again.

Nice mod!

For 3 screen / real dmd users i've modded the script to use FlexDMD for scoring. Files are here if anyone wants them; https://www.dropbox....(2021).zip?dl=0

Copy the vbs file and MST3K.FlexDMD folder into your Tables folder and name the .vbs file the same as your table file to use. Also make sure you turn off the Use External DMD option for the rom in vpinmame.

It should give you something like this;

mst3k0_t.gif

(Note - the script is for the 'standard' table version not the apron dmd version)

Edit - @wpilot I noticed i had two backglass instances running when i launched the table, so i commented out line 103 in your table script (.Run in table1_init) as there's another .Run command a few lines later. I have amended my vbs table script in the link above to reflect this.

When playing the MST3K Pinball Peril (2021).zip table (desktop view) and I try to shoot for the upper level mini table, the ball sometimes seems to be 'blocked' from getting up the small gold ramp. It does get up there sometimes but other times it does not.  I'm no pinball wizard but I think my shot is accurate enough to make it up to that upper level but it usually does not.  Anyone else what that issue?

It's a good call.  I've noted that when I was authoring triggering the "Movie Sign" video at the bottom of the ramp (so much so that I moved the trigger to once you actually get up onto the mini table).  The shot can be tricky, but I frequently make it on my cabinet.  Can't speak to the desktop experience unfortunately.

BTW, are you playing the 2.0 version?

Thanks for the reply. When I play MST3K Pinball Peril (2021)_apronDMD.zip I tend to make the upper level shot more often.  Maybe it is just the view/angle change that is triggering me to make the shot.

No 2.0 for me...I'm not a pup user.  Is that shot easier in that version?

On my cabinet, the shot, though challenging, is still "makeable".
