Hi all...First I want to say thank you as a new member to the very helpful members who have brought me a long way in a short amount of time in being able to play on my windows 10 gaming laptop (so am only using single screen).  I'm not building cabinets.  I'm just a semi-old guy who has played pinball for 60 years and I own a few machines and now am graduating into playing visual pinball on my computer.

After the easy E.M. downloads I'm advancing into playing tables with roms and have had some progress with a few tables.  I have the up-to-date VPX/install files, etc and can download tables, roms (leave 'em zipped) and rar files (unzip 'em).

MY CURRENT PROBLEM --- I am SOOO close (I think) to achieving a goal of playing Theatre of Magic (2.4).  I can start and play the game BUT there is no score display and the only sounds are the mechanical clicks of the "machine"...no voice or bells and whistles.

Any ideas?  Thank you so much for any help. What you guys do is absolutely amazing to me.  Playing all the classics that I grew up with is fabulous!

to show the DMD, find the line in the tablescript that starts with .hidden

change it to .hidden=0

you will have to NOT run in exclusive full screen mode to set it

Ultimately, the better way is for you to learn how to add a flasher based, or text box based DMD screen to your tables that need one

In short, you would add code like this BEFORE the loadVPM line of the script

Dim VarHidden, UseVPMDMD, UseVPMColoredDMD
If Table1.ShowDT = true then
UseVPMColoredDMD = True
'UseVPMDMD = True
    VarHidden = 1

else

'    UseVPMDMD = False
UseVPMColoredDMD = False
    VarHidden = 0

end if

Then either put a flasher object beside the table, make it a size that is a multiple of 128x32
and set it to Use Script DMD

Or add a textbox to the backdrop, set it to Use Script DMD

and put DMD in its text entry

And also, change the script's .hidden line to read

.Hidden = varhidden

Then go back to using exclusive fullscreen mode

Provided your ROM is a complete ROM and is not missing the audio
try the 8 and 9 keys to raise volume

may have to hit END to open the coin door

Thank you....Before seeing your post I checked "use external DMD" in the F1 options box and that gave me the score display!!...wow, that is huge.   So don't know if I will have to add/change code in the script, which I have never done.

As to the volume, the numbers 8 and 9 didn't do anything.  As I had mentioned, I do have volume in the sense that it is the clicks and clanky noises as I hit things, but no Voice (and bell) sounds.  I do have the exact 2 roms that the notes say are necessary and I assume that they are complete but who knows...I sure wouldn't know.  But again, there is audio for the clank sounds.  Is there another option in the F1 box for this?

Thank you so much for helping.

clicks and clanky noises are table sounds
you are looking for the ROM sounds

I do not know which ROM you have, but this ROM definitely has sound

There are 2...I have the one linked to by the author, tom_13.zip, AND tom_14hb.zip as recommend on the TOM download page.   So I'm hoping that tom_14h.zip will do the trick.  Gonna try it now and will let you know.

Thanks Wiesshund...you have certainly done the most to help me get off the ground and I appreciate it.  Soon I should be pretty self-sufficient.  I just did Creature from the Black Lagoon with no issues!

So it was a no go with the 13h.zip...in fact, I lost function with it.  I had to go back to the 2 rom files recommended for that TOM download to get back to where I was.  I'll just stay with what I have and have no bells and whistles.  I even deleted all of it and tried with the other TOM download on the list (Biggus).   But loading it revealed about 7 roms needed and looked like a mess.  I couldn't even find them on a search.  It is what it is.

This whole rom thing is like a crapshoot.  I even followed a Major Frenchy video from a year ago to the letter on downloading and getting the rom for The Walking Dead.  I even tried to get the exact rom from the same site that he did (VP Universe) but that rom doesn't download anymore.  Maybe there is something going on with Stern regarding that. Anyway, what worked a year ago for Frenchy doesn't work now.  I'll just have to get lucky here and there.

Thanks for everything

I meant 14h zip not 13h....my bad

I downloaded the bigus TOM table from this site and it works on mine with the rom from this site..  try hitting F1 and click skip rom check.. I had to do this for TOM just last night lol

I was going over the collection in VR and had issues with the table saying a file wasn't correct so I set it to skip the rom check and now its good to go..

 I'm just going to set this here and go get a cup of coffee.. DONT TOUCH ANYTHING!! :pardon:  NOT MY LINKS BUT ENJOY  :crazy:

Thanks for chiming in!   I have it working now!!!  Skip rom check was always checked so that wasn't it.   Turns out that the volume was REALLY low...so low I couldn't hear the voice.  I couldn't adjust by using the end key and 8/9...in fact, hitting control and end only altered the brightness possibilities.  So when I turned up the volume of my computer full blast with a little speaker I could hear the voice/music!!!....but the clanking noises were deafening. So I figured out that I could go into the audio options and lower the sound effects and keep music all the way up.

I'm still using TOM version 2.4, not bigus.  The only thing that is notable is that i get the "incorrect u22" message for a second when the table loads but it doesn't seem to cause any problem.  It's just weird that I will have to mess with the volume depending whether or not I play TOM.  But it's workable.

Thank you Karlor and Wiesshund for super help.  I'm like a pig in sh_t now!!

Not sure what you got going on there then.
I downloaded the table from here

Theatre of Magic

And used the same ROM i linked to you

had no trouble running it nor having the ROM audio
You have to disable pinball startup check or you get U22 incorrect error

Table plays, says welcome to theater of magic
shoot the spinner
here is another ball
and a bunch of other stuff

I opened the coin door and raised the volume as factory default is kinda low.
Other than that, works fine.

Delete your NVRAM and start over?

You should be able to hit the END key on your keyboard, and you will see a message displayed in the DMD. (As seen in Pic.)

COIN DOOR OPEN

INTERLOCK DISABLES

PLAYFIELD HIGH POWER

capture155_t.png

When you see this message, you will know you have hit the END key, and the coin door will be opened.

After you see this message you will then hit the 9 key on keyboard to turn up volume.

When finished, hit END key to close the coin door.

Very Cool!!   YOu have been such a big help.  I have TOM working by just muddling through.  Hitting the end button did nothing.  I tried Ctrl and End and that just kept scrolling through brightness levels.  So couldn't figure out how to get to volume using the coin door/ end button thing.  I just used the audio options to up and down the volumes on voice and table sounds.  Volume was sooooooo low at first that I didn't realize it was working, just set crazy low.  Very excited to have TOM and a few others now.  It's so awesome...glad I'm retired.

You guys amaze me to no end.  Thanks.

When I said "wow, that was huge" in a previous post I wasn't referring to the DMD being huge but the fact that I actually now HAD a DMD was amazing!!!   I'm going to try to get Medieval Madness next if possible

to hit END, you need the table in focus, not the DMD display
PinMAME all by itself is not listening for VPX commands, so table must be in focus for VPX to send them to pinmame

Yes, you can do the volume in pinmame directly, but you'd have to hit TAB and then look at controls for this game
and see what coin door is mapped to.

Easier to just do from the table

You may wish to delete the rom cfg from the pinmame\cfg folder
as when you set the volume normally, the per channel volumes you just made might wind up way out of line overall

Still wondering why my end button doesn't do what it is supposed to.  You mean the end button on the numeric keypad (#1).  I tried Ctrl and end...maybe it's shift and end...or ctrl shift and end.  I'll check it out

No

HOME END PAGE UP PAGE DOWN INSERT DELETE

of the NOT on the numeric keypad family

Numpad, whether numlock is on or off, has totally different keyscan identities

and do not equate to being the same keys

Thanks for all that advice.  You are dragging me along pretty well.....lol.  I hope that for my purposes I'm getting close to having enough knowledge to stay in my zone.  I wonder if I can use apple tv adapter to put computer screen on the big TV screen without having any lag in the game?  Is this possible?

Eh, i am going to say, doubtful
The wireless delay will compound with the TV's own input delay
Use an HDMI cable and a wireless game controller?
