File Name: Pole Position (Sonic 1987)

File Submitter: goldchicco

File Submitted: 04 Nov 2020

Manufacturer: Other - Pinball
Year: 1987
Permission to MOD?: Yes, without approval

VPX Conversion by: Goldchicco & 32assassin

vp8 table by: TAB
vp9 table by JP Salas

Thank You to JP Salas for giving me the OK to proceed with this conversion and for those kind words when I presented the table to him:
"It looks good. Still it doesn't have the right proportions. I made the table 13 years ago, when the screen where 4:3, cabinets didn't exist, and VP didn't have any zoom capabilities. So I made the table as big as posible, cutting away the apron as much as I could  :) As you can see the graphics where 1024x1024, since that was the max size VP could handle."

Special Thanks to :
@32assassin for helping me with this conversion and for sharing his passion, knowledge and time.
@vogliadicane for the LUT file
@sneakily1 for the environmental image I borrowed from his personal collection

This conversion carried over well known 'issues' as described above . I decided  to share it anyway with the community, so consider it as blueprint for a new completely rebuild, feel free to Mod or share any improvements.

Hope you enjoy it the way it is and please leave constructive feedback or comments in the support topic and will try to make it better.

Thank you for the nice recreation!

One remark - I cannot get the table into 5-ball operation, the tickbox's use showed no effect. Further the match freature does not work (not SO important for game fun).

Does anyone has an idea to fix it?

Again thanks, Christian.

Thanks again for this very nice table, I have noticed a couple of things, the player 1,2 etc. lights are not working & game over is not working also.

@clyde

Player 1, 2, 3 and 4 lights in DT mode are working, maybe are not too bright, but are working;  the Game Over is not a light. but a text and with the new light code is not working.

Is working instead with the old vp9 lights code.

Table was made 13 years ago, as stated in the description and I decided  to share it anyway with the community, so consider it as blueprint for a new completely rebuild, feel free to Mod or share any improvements.

Hopefully someone will rebuild this table in the future, I like it a lot, but I did already my part with what was available.

Table does not appear to use the GameOn/Over solenoid (30)
Otherwise i was going to use it to set game over or not

But my ROM toolbox says the game does nothing significant at game over to make easy use of
And it does not even set ball count back to 0

So you would need to monitor and trap the states of the player number lights

And if no change to player 1 through 4 after a given amount of time (like half a second since they blink) then flip game over message

Sub SolGameOn (Enabled)
     If Enabled Then
         vpmNudge.SolGameOn True
         l78.text = " " : l78a.text = " "
     Else
         vpmNudge.SolGameOn False
         l78.text = "Game" : l78a.text = "Over"
     End If
 End Sub

as for the 3 ball / 5 ball thing
must be a different dip for this Sonic ROM or something ?
as he has it correct in the script, if comparing to other sonic roms means anything
Or maybe this ROM actually has no 5 ball option?

As for the player lights, just change intensity to 12 and you can see them good

What i was refering to was the player 1up light not coming on not the actual scoring lights.

Just repaint the backdrop and remove the border around the player number, only difference really.
Oh and nudge the lights over a bit

actually just extract JP's backdrop
and then adjust object position/scale as needed

The single digit lights are there, i was just wondering why they are not coming on. As for the backdrop i already made one.   poleposition.jpg

They are coming on for me
They are just inside the graphic outline
If i move them to the right, they look just like the vp9 screenshot you are showing in the other post

See? i nudged it over
If you want them like nuclear holocaust versions, set falloff power to 0
You wont miss them then

Sorry if this is a dumb question but how do you start a game?  I can add credits but nothing happens when start key (#1) is hit. Thanks!

This is bazaar that I can't start a game. Can't start a game on the vp8 version I downloaded 13 years ago either, and I'm sure I played it when I got it. Don't know what could have changed. Other Sonic tables start fine. Tried reassigning start button.  Not critical as I have 1000 others to play, but would like to be able to play every table out there!  Any ideas very welcomed!

If you played it previously, on same setup
I might suggest 1st
delete the roms nvram file, delete the roms cfg file, and delete the roms registry entry for vpinmame
that will at least let you reset the ROM in case old info is screwing things up

Success! Thank you for refreshing my memory to try that.  You're backdrop looks great - may I ask how you moved the credit-ball in play display over to the left?  Thanks again!
