I migrated to a Linux system recently, Manjaro 5.6.11.1 specifically, and started setting some things up.

Does VPX have a Linux version? And if no, then does it work well under WINE? I'm still setting WINE up on my end so i'm trying to make sure.

I was able to get vpm and vp working. I didn't try b2s or any frontend loader.

That's not very helpful. What table and what is on line 79?

That's what on line 79, this table in particular worked fine on Windows but not WINE, it's a .vpx table and using the VisualPinballX.exe, don't know if I can link the table (don't remember who made it) but if needed and allowed I can provide a download.

 

I also tested Black Knight and that gives a runtime error as well, Line 276: For Each Light in GlowLights : Light.IntensityScale = GlowAmount: Light.FadeSpeedUp = Light.Intensity /  10 : Light.FadeSpeedDown = Light.FadeSpeedUp : Next

Both of these worked on Windows but not WINE.

You might have better luck with Future Pinball under Linux. I have gotten it to run numerous times.

VP, not so much. Getting either of them to 'run' really isn't the question. Is it playable? that's the real question.

I went down the Linux rabbit hole with virtual pinball and I didn't like what I saw so I had to suck it up

and run Windows. High end gaming unfortunately is still pretty much a Windows only thing for the best experience.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but this is one of the handful of places in the entire internet where this has been discussed. VPX almost works in wine-staging (6.18) with wsh57 installed to the prefix via winetricks. I always get a specific script error which makes most tables crash though. VP9 on the other hand works pretty well based on the dozens of tables I've played on it.

Unfortunately, any "sort of works" in VPX 10.6, may very well be reduced to "does not really work at all" in VPW 10.7 as a number of things have changed

 

I have not tried it.

Source is available for both VPX and Vpinmame, should a linux guru want to try their hand at a direct port
which would probably be the ultimate way to go

Visual Pinball Engine looks very promising for Linux support, but that will probably take a while. Windows is probably the best option for VPX, but I'm quite happy with VP9 tables for now since that's about as much as my Ryzen APU can handle at 75hz.

I have had some luck with wine in Linux and Visual Pinball 9 and 10.2  Most of the issues I find with Wine is missing libraries that are critical  to the operation of the program. If your lucky Wine or some Windows library will throw you an error telling you what dependencies VP wants. If not then you have to start installing blindly, by trial and error  into Wine, Microsoft libraries and support programs until you can get  Visual Pinball to work in Linux. This is not an easy or pleasant experience and would not recommend doing it unless you have patience. Keep in mind that Wine is not Windows. It is an environment that emulates Windows. It only works as well as what Microsoft allows you to install in it. And if Microsoft doesn't allow a Wine install of all their libraries an application needs it will not work to it's full extent.

 

Generally I gave up on Windows as a primary operating system  9 years ago. XP was my last stop. I use Linux and it's big brother Unix for both professional and home use.  The only thing I use Windows is for the virtual pinball.  When  I started with virtual pinball I had no idea what  the more modern versions of Windows looked like nor how to use them.  And even though I believe Windows is the biggest bloatware on the planet the truth is it works very well for this type of game development. No matter what unless Microsoft allows full installs into Wine these games will never play as well as they could under Windows.  And for me that is what is important.

you just have to deal with some loss of customization features and a water mark

I'm hoping that some day Proton ( https://www.protondb.com ) will let me get rid of Windows completely.  I'm definitely not looking forward to all of the telemetry and marketing chatter in the background on Windows 11.

 

Yeah, I know Windows 10 already does a lot of that, but you can strip quite a bit of it out using PowerShell. I'm not so sure how that will work on Windows 11 with all of the new 'security' features.

Or use a keygen to validate it. It sends a digital handshake that says "here's $20, Bob's your uncle- you didn't see nothing"....

Are you implying I'm selling other people's tables? I've made a couple over the years for trade shows and Comican, but they were 100% my own original work. Hardly anything I can quit my day job over. And they were released to the public on my site.

Works fine in Linux Mint and PCLinuxOS. I've been running VP in Linux for YEARS. I used PlayOnLinux for it since WINE has problems with ways for VP to run.

 

I've even gotten VP to run in Linux Mint and PCLinuxOS WITHOUT PlayOnLinux OR WINE. This takes a bit of messing around with but it works.

 

It's not tough to set it up but it takes time. Good luck.
