I have an original Bally 3-Chime unit which has 3 of the solenoid coils (CC 31-2000) in it.

 

Any idea if I can drive these coils using 12V DC?

I wired each directly from my PC's 12V rail ... and when I connect the wire for 12V power it drives each solenoid.

 

However, I heard the PC make a USB sound like something connected or disconnected.

 

Did I short the thing out?

 

(by the way no diode yet so maybe it dropped reverse current on the 12V rail?)

Turns out .. attaching a diode fixed that.

 

Still can I just power these with 12V?

 

or should I use a step-up to 24V to drive these puppies?

That seems to be from an old Chicago cab.

I have found a thread on this site and they are talking about the voltage which seems to be 50v.

Your coil might not work with 12v at all.
I have a replay knocker that will not trigger at 12v.

My suggestion. If you have access to a variable power supply, set it at 12v and touch the + and -

Then switch to 24v and do the same.

24v will most likely trigger it.

Old topic, but for anyone looking for info, this coil was originally running on 50v. 24v will fire it, but not as crisp or loud as 50v
