File Name: Hyperball (Williams, 1981) VP9 FS Analog Control Version

File Submitter: DarthMarino

File Submitted: 11 Sep 2016

File Category: VP 9.x MOD Cabinet Tables (FULL SCREEN)

Author(s): DarthMarino<br />Destruk<br />Kristian<br />Gaston<br />TAB<br />Rascal<br />Sir Cheddar
Manufacturer: Williams
Year: 1981
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, without approval

This is a reskin of the existing Hyperball table (originally by Destruk, Kristian, Gaston and TAB) made for high definition displays.

The main purpose of this release is to allow for analog control input. The original table had two rotating handles that could be turned to aim anywhere on the playfield.  The digital controls make it hard to make precise shots and to turn quickly from one side of the table to the other. I have included an updated digital-control version for those wishing to play with their flipper and Magna Save buttons.

I don't have a full screen setup but Sir Cheddar helped with the conversion from my desktop table.

There are 3 versions of Hyperball included in this download:

Analog Z-Axis Version
Analog Z-Rotation Version
Digital Version

If you are using the DIGITAL VERSION, then no special installation is necessary. The shooter will rotate at a set speed. The controls are as follows:

Flipper Buttons- Turn Shooter
Magna Save Buttons - Shoot Ball
Plunger Button- Z-bomb (screen clearing special attack)
1 - Start One-Player Game (press again for extended game)
2 - Start Two-Player Game (press again for extended game)

*Note- If your flippers are mapped to something like 1 & 2, they may not work, just remap them in VP if this is the case.

If you are using an ANALOG VERSION, you will first need to install Rascal's VP Mouse and Joystick Input Plugin. I have included this in the file.  Run the setup of this program and install it into the folder where your Tables are.  The installation does tend to hang for a bit it shouldn't take longer than a minute or so.

There are multiple methods of analog controls that can be used to aim the shooter:
X-Axis
Y-Axis
Z-Axis
X-Rotation
Y-Rotation
Z-Rotation
Slider0
Slider1

First identify which method you will be using. The Z-Axis version is what you should use if you have a Z-Axis analog plunger. The Z-Rotation version is the most accurate to the original machine.  This is typically the rotation on a flight stick handle but can also be used on secondary analog sticks on gamepads. Since you are likely going to use one of these, I have included a preconfigured table for both.  Just start up the proper version.

If you wish to use another axis or slider, then you need to modify the script.  Open the Z-Axis version and click replace in the edit menu of the script.  Search for JZAXIS and replace it with the one of the following that you wish to use:

jxaxis for Joystick X Axis
jyaxis for Joystick Y Axis
jxrotation for Joystick X-Rotation
jyrotation for Joystick Y-Rotation
jslider0 for Joystick Slider 0
jslider1 for Joystick Slider 1

*Note: The Plugin can be temperamental. If the controls aren't working, close Visual Pinball and try again. They may stop working if you pause the game. It is best to only have one joystick/gamepad plugged in when playing this.

Use left trigger to shoot and left magna save for Z-bomb.

A note on using a digital plunger as controller: I'm using Zebulon's plunger and controlling Hyperball worked without problems on z-axis joystick controll. Other plungers work the same and should also work without problems.

With Zebulons Plunger Kit it is playable as long as you move the plunger constantly because sadly the kit resets the plunger position to 0 if you leave it at the same position for 2 seconds. This highly affects game play in this use case, other plunger systems shouldn't show this behavior and work better with Hyperball.

hi, thanks for this release..  just checkin it out.

i tried the digital version, and it works great, but i dont have magnasave buttons on my cab so it is very hard to control.

i installed the vpmouse setup to my tables folder.

is there a way that i can use my mouse to control the left/right shooter?

i tried all of this below:

jxaxis        for Joystick X Axis
jyaxis        for Joystick Y Axis
jxrotation    for Joystick X-Rotation
jyrotation    for Joystick Y-Rotation
jslider0    for Joystick Slider 0
jslider1     for Joystick Slider 1

but none of them seem to let me use my mouse... is it possible?  thanks///sparky

The plugin allows for mouse input however it can't be used in this case. The program reads a value between -1000 and 1000 depending on how far the analog axis is pushed.  The mouse constantly resets to zero so it won't work.

If you don't have magna save buttons, I would suggest just playing with Auto Fire enabed which is mapped to the Q key.  If this is also your Quit button, change Quit to something else in Visual Pinball before launching.

DM, thanks for the info...

my Q key is my Quit key.

instead of changing it in VP, is there a way i could change the script to possibly the ' key? or another?

If KeyCode=16 Then 'Q
    If AutoFire.Enabled Then
        AutoFire.Enabled=0
    Else
        AutoFire.Enabled=1

i cant figure it out, but im sure it must be possible...thanks.sparky

You can change it to any key you want:

1=2, +1 for each key to the right
Q=16, +1 for each key to the right
A=30, +1 for each key to the right
Z=44, +1 for each key to the right
