File Name: Strikes N' Spares (Gottlieb 1995) VP9.9

File Submitter: mfuegemann

File Submitted: 26 Jun 2015

File Category: VPinMAME 9.x Recreations

Author(s): mfuegemann
zany
Manufacturer: Gottlieb
Year: 1995
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, with approval

This is Strikes n' Spares by Gottlieb, Desktop edition.

Zany came up with the idea to build a new version of this pinball machine. He made the golden ramps, the 3D topper and the flasher domes. I did the playfield redraw based on photos of a somewhat stripped playfield, the apron and put it all together.
Again a manual was not availiable, so the VP8 table by destruk/TAB was a great help identifying the correct solenoid, switch and lamp numbers.

Batch provided the backdrop image for the desktop version.
Additional Thanks go to Fuzzel for providing the lightmap images for the inserts and JPSalas for the fading flasher code.

Edit:
If the table is not registering coins, You can reset the ROM to factory default this way: "7" to enter the menu, then left flipper until "Game Adjustments", right flipper to select, then "1" to reset
After a reset You might want to set the Tournament question on Gamestart to Off in the ROM menu (Game adjustment 41 should be "Normal", cycle with "7"). After changing press F3 to reset.
In the FS support topic, Stat posted some nvram files too.
Configurable options at the top of the script are
- GI brightness
- Flasher light level
- FreePlay (faked)
- Number of spare balls at the ramps 0-3 (only visual impact)
- Topper "Beer" texture that will show on Strikes and Spares

The table comes with the configuration file code by gtxjoe that creates/reads cController.txt from the User directory. Just change the variable cController to 0 and the table is looking for the configuration file.

Have fun and please use the support topic to post any findings and suggestions.

Michael

If I insert coins I can hear that coin noise, but the dmd shows "coins 0", so I can't start the table. :(

You need to do a factory reset or get the files for system 3

It is not registering the coins and I cannot do a reset as my dmd just flashes and I cant see what menu I am in. I did get it to start one time and I couldn't see the score as another image of a scorecard was always displayed on top except for the flashing every second or so. Any idea how to fix it?

Download the attachment in this post.

Copy or move the contents of zipped file into your nvram folder located where your Visual Pinball Program was installed.

This is a pre-initialized nvram that is already set to accept coins.

(I just followed MFuegemanns instructions and then copied my nvram from my folder and added as attachment.)

Attached File  snspares.zip   635bytes   57 downloads

This should work for you.

Hope this helps you.

It can seem hard at first trying to navigate through the service menu.

But I would encourage you to practice doing this by reading MFuegemann's info a couple of posts up, because it will come in really handy on alot of tables that need things activated through the service menu.

You can find alot more important Service Menu info in these tutorials written by the always helpful ta2686.

The volume adjustment tutorials will not help him for this table.  Gottlieb never integrated volume control into their roms so they used analog controls inside the machine to control volume.

For this table he would have to adjust the volume via the PinMAME window.  This would involve:

- Clicking on the PinMAME window (or DMD if you prefer) with the mouse

- Pressing the tilde (~) key on your keyboard - that is the key to the left of the 1 key.  This will open a white box within that window

- Using the up and down arrow keys scroll through the channels until you find one that needs adjusting

- Using the left and right arrow keys adjust the volume of the channel - the left arrow key lowers the volume, the right arrow key raises the volume

- Repeat the previous two steps to adjust other channels

- When done press the tilde key to close the white box

- Click anywhere on the table to return focus to the table

Since this is not a rom adjustment I did not include this procedure with the other rom adjustment tutorials.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that file allowed it to accept the coins and play but I still cant see the score on my DMD, it flickers every few seconds. When I get a spare or a strike though it shows up that part just fine. I saw someone else had the same problem with it flickering or overlaying on their DMD as well. Any idea how to fix that?

After some research, this game has 2 displays and they are both trying to display on my pindmd at the same time which is why they flicker. Anyone know how to move them from my pindmd to the backglass?

I think you can hit F1 key while table is running, and it will bring up the ROM menu.

Maybe you can try unchecking Use External DMD (dll) in the menu settings.

This will only effect this games ROM. If it doesn't work, you can always go back and checkmark it again.

Worth a try. I am not a cabinet owner, but I think this might work for this table.
