File Name: Kings of Steel (Bally)(1984)(chinzman93)(1.2)(DT)(9.16)

File Submitter: chinzman93

File Submitted: 12 Mar 2014

File Category: VPinMAME 9.x Recreations

Author(s): chinzman93
Manufacturer: Bally
Year: 1984
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, with approval

This is my first from scratch build complete with redraws of plastics and playfield. This was built with various versions of 9.16 and 9.2. The GI ramps use additive BI, but the table should run on 9.15 as well.
The GI is a combination of alpha ramps for under the plastic lighting and the plastics were done using the dB2S designer.

Also, this table has the same code for selecting 1 of 6 choices of GI color from my F-14 mod in the fullscreen section. I only recommend the yellow, white, and blue for this table. The red, purple, and green are included if you want to experiment.  This table also includes all of the updates and bug fixes from the updated FS version. Please go to that table for a full change log.

I would like to thank all the great contributors to the community and in particular:

Playfield and Plastics Redraw:
TAB for his great playfield scan.
Rob046 for some excellent photo resources.
Pinuck and Rob046 for help with some fonts.

Table Build:
Luvthatapex for a great starter table and dip switch code.
UW for use of some of diverter code and some objects from his BP table.
Aaron James and Luvthatapex for playing some early versions and offering some great feedback.
Itchigo for suggesting the use of the dB2S designer for doing plastics lighting. Not it's intended purpose, but it does work.
Koadic for his plunger and controller code.
Herweh for the dB2S designer used for plastics lighting.
Background is from the resource section uploaded by JPSalas.
Kings of Steel wheel art uploaded by 32assasin.
Kiwi provided the round target images.

I apologize if I missed anyone.

Please report any issues to the support thread. I have DT version coming in a week or so depending any bug reports here.

I hope everyone enjoys it! Sorry for the delay.

***FIXED IN 1.2:   Just noticed that DX9 Test 10 is out. There is an issue with the apron in Test 10 only. I am sure it is my fault. But it seems to work fine in Test 9a and prior. To fix for Test 10, change the image for Wall10 to KOSPlastics and save the table. There are 2 instruction cards on that image..but it works. I will fix the apron when the DX9 build is closer to official.

I will look at these issues tonight or this weekend. I never experienced the ball disappearing, but I am using DX9 builds. I will download 9.2.1 and try it. Also will get the tilt switch taken care off.

Good to see that I'm not alone in terms of the disappering ball problems (and that the problem is being addressed).

Are you running 9.2.1 as well? Also could one of you having this issue try downloading the fullscreen version and seeing if you get it there also?

I actually prefer that... :)  I would have been more confused had it just been a desktop only issue. This would appear to be related specifically to 9.2.1, because this was built with earlier version and played on the DX9 versions. It also could be video card related. I run an ATI card. I assume most run a NVIDIA. In any case, I don't think it will be to big a deal to fix, if I can replicate it.

Pin-Pete confirmed the fixes. I will be uploading DT version 1.2 shortly. It will be available pending admin approval at some point. Fixes include: Adjusting the backdrop settings to prevent ball disappearing, changing the tilt switch number to 15, the drawing order on some of the GI ramps, and fixing the apron issue (only present on DX9 Test 10 and above).

Let me know if version 1.2 addresses your issues. It should. Hopefully it will be up relatively soon.

I saw the same problem. It's a minor thing, but still qualifies as a bug.

Love the table overall. It plays almost like the real game. I managed to roll over the score on the first try. Let's hear it for 'King Of Right Target!' :D

I could have been smart, but I never learned anything by being smart!
