Hey all, I have what seems to be an odd issue, and I'm hoping there's an easy answer.

First, my settings:

Windows XP SP3

Display 1: NVIDIA GeForce GTX660

Visual Pinball:

Currently using 9.1.6 r628

Have also tried 9.1.5 and 9.1.6 r613

Visual Pinball Video Preferences:

vpvideosettings.jpg

The issue I'm having is that "lines" (for sake of a better term) show (or bleed through) onto my playfield when it's rendered.

For an example, Lord Hiryu's Indy Jones table in the editor:

ij01.jpg

I've pointed to the lines that "bleed through" or show up on the playfield when I play as you can see here:

ij02.jpg

I've also tried the new release by teppotee, and the lines still show up on my playfield as seen in these two images:

ij03.jpg

ij04.jpg'

Another table that does this is Tales of the Arabian Nights where a line shows up, and also some weird lines around the flippers:

totan01.jpg

This happens in ALL versions of Visual Pinball that I've tried.

I'm hoping it's a simple setting in VP, or maybe in my nVidia settings somewhere, but I'm really hoping someone can help me out here!!!

Thanks

Using 628 and 639, I don't have those lines.  I don't have Region Updates on as I get faster FPS without it.  Try without and see if they go away.

I had this problem when I was trying to use the nVidia app to control the video cards 3d abilities. I don't recall which one caused the problem (may have been more than one) but when I removed VP from the list the lines went away.

I've added a link in the VP9.1.6 Alpha/Beta Bugs & Feedback thread as I think this has something to do with the new rev's, I'm also using the latest build and have the same issue..

p.s. Tales of the Arabian Nights the lines above the flippers are correct it's on the real table. It's a transparent plastic over them in the shape of a sword if you will.. :-)

I also have this problem (you can best see it with NBA Fastbreak - the lines are around almost every light). I asked this some time ago and I think toxie answered. It is caused by the very old 3D technique VP uses (2D-blits). I did some tests and the lines occur whenever a kind of Antialiasing is set (no mater which algorithm - I tested all combinations). When switching it off the lines are not there. So best would be to use Hardware FXAA instead of 'true' anti-aliasing but unfortunately this does not work under Win7 (in XP it works) because VP uses quite old DX7 routines.

@gamefixer: when removing explicit settings for VP from list, I think nvidia drivers will use settings from app (VP) itself - and it does not force Anti-Aliasing, this is the reason why the lines were not there. Maybe you can test it with latest NVidia Beta Drivers but I don't expect any difference.

I currently live with the lines (some tables don't have it e.g. AFM other are quite bad but playable) but I see this as biggest disadvantage of VP and the step to DX9 is far far away...

Turn off the anti antialiasing settings in nvidia settings, and the lines will totally dissapear.

It's got to be something with the last few rev's b/c I've never had this problem before.

I did upgrade to the latest compiled build and changed a few VP settings, but once I noticed the problem, I reverted back to all old video settings in VP using the new rev and the problem was still there. so like I said its got to be something in the new rev doing this.. It's almost like what 9.15 rev's were doing moving reels but it seems to be moving light objects.

I can answer one issue you have. The tails of Arabian nights, lines on flippers is actually plastic and is suppose to be there. Other lines no. I've had that problem if actual screen res not set at same res as your preferences? But like I said the lines on those flippers are plastics. Like real machine. :)

@ICPjuggla: Are you sure you had Hardware-AA active with an Nvidia Card under Win7 (x64) without having the black lines? Be careful, it is sometimes tricky if the Nvidia general settings are used at all (depends on energy efficiency setting and 'override apllication' setting). Also there are some tables where you can't see the black lines.

If Region optimization [Nvidia (FX)AA tweak] is not checked in the video setting in VP I get a major drop in FPS. With it tables run at about 1200 FPS and without 500-600 FPS.

Or do I have to fix something in the Nvidia settings? If so where please? And what exactly?

Edit: one more thing, if I don't have it checked in VP video settings none of the flashers work correctly either, it just creates a big blob on the screen.

Thanks all for the replies!!

I turned off the antialiasing settings in the nVidia control panel, and the lines are no longer visible.

Thanks again for all the input.

@ICPjuggla - I really don't think it's 9.1.6 of VP, as I had the same thing when running 9.1.5.
