I did a lot of playing around with this game over the weekend to see what could realistically be done to it as a
VP9 update, and discovered two things in particular. One is how well it stands up, despite many of the shots being unrefined and unforgiving (always the mark of an old
VP game). The second is that it ONLY 'works' in the old default 1000:2000
VP format; I had a go at converting it to a standardised Bally playfield size, I also tried rebuilding it as a full-size widebody, with a proper Gottlieb-mech roto target, and both times, the results to totally stank. What most people don't realise about widebodies is they require their own distinct set of design disciplines, especially the space closest to either wall of the cabinet; all the angles in relation to the bottom flippers widen out, and the repositioning of the side lanes to make them attainable meant that the game couldn't incorporate the space needed for the third flipper. So basically Card Sharks will need to be updated as it is, or not at all.
