I know that Williams' Flash table has a rom setting that will enable background sound during game play but I cannot see where you can turn it on on JP's version. I hit F6 for rom settings and check both sound boxes and still no background. I checked the original manual and the background is sw 33 (on) but I dont see that listed with an F6. Anyone know how to turn this on?

Do you have the latest version? Cuz I just fired up JP's Flash, & pressed F6 & plain as day is the "synth sound" option. That is the only box I have ticked & I get background sound.

But remember, Flash background sound is the 1st game to ever have background sound, & it is from 1979 so it isn't much. It is just a constant tone in the background that gets higher pitched the longer your ball is in play. Just thought I would mention that in case you were looking for some sort of melody or music to happen, it won't.
Still kinda neat though, the increased pitch puts pressure on you, as if its saying "you are doing great, you better not F it up!".

This is the procedure to turn on the background sound for this table:

1. Press 9 to enter diagnostic mode. The displays should go blank when this key is pressed.

2. Press 8 to enter test mode.

3. Press 7 then press 8 to see 01 in the credit display.

4. Continue to press 8 until you see 04 in the credit display and 31 in the match/ball in play display.

5. Press the 1 key to change the value in the first player display to 01.

6. Press F3 to save the change and reset the table.

The manual shows to change 33 as that was the setting with the rom using the System 4 boards. The PinMAME rom set here is the one that uses the System 6 boards and the options changed but the manuals that are out there were never updated.

Hope this helps.
