Hey all,
I just found VP a few days ago and I'm really eager to start playing a table.
Although I dont understand one thing yet.
I installed VP Installer and updated it to 9.1.2 and MAME 2.4 like the turtorial. Fonts and scripts are updated and that part seems to work.
So went to the download section to download a table and a rom (both are needed is stated in the vturtorial video) but here im a bit lost.
From which section do I need to download a table cause some only have a few and which rom do I need.
eg. I want to play the indiana jones one:
The are VPM ones /MOD one and ofcourse VP8 and VP9 versions.
Same goes for the roms. For indiana jones I see a whole list of them, how do I know which one to download?
and when I tried the addams family I only see ones in the VP8 section while I have VP9 I assume.
Its a bit confusion what to do really and I couldn't find a good turtorial on that part really.
Anyone with some tips?

I suggest Melon's "The Addams Family" version 2.0 for VP9. Most tables with multiple roms use the one with the most downloads. I think Melon's Addams Family uses the L-7 rom, but if it doesn't work, an error will come up and tell you which one you need. Good luck.

Welcome.
It sounds like you need to click on Visual Pinball Desktop in the red stripe on the top of this page.
Then click VP9 Downloads and after that VPM recreations.
It will give you several options. If you are just getting started downloading tables I would choose Most Downloaded.
This will give you a list of the best VP9 tables available.
As far as the roms go, just like was stated above, the one with the most downloads is usually the correct one.
Let us know if you are still having any trouble.
And just in case, the roms go in your Pinmame Rom folder and the tables go in your Visual Pinball Tables folder.

I too am finding it hard. I have had vp 8 running perfectly, and now Ive upgraded to 9 so I can use cabinet tables. ( i want to make a cab one day!)
So was curios to see a rotated table as Ive fitted a 2nd monitor for the high scores. I downloaded star trek the next gen.. under most downloaded then searched for its corresponding rom. Can't seem to find it. Why not have a link to the right rom on every table page????? Im sure there's a reason for that so apologies for my ignorance!!
The table is STTNG_VP91x_v1.2FS
Thanks in advance

When you say you searched for it, did you use the search feature up in the gray bar? Just put Start Trek in the downloads drop down box, all the Next Generation roms are on the second page.
I don't mind being called a PINHEAD!

No but have just tried that. Still struggling. Yes I found loads of roms but which one is my question. I got the table off of vp cabinet / fullscreen / most downloaded and then went to roms just underneath to find the corresponding rom (red bar)
I am trying to use vp9 now, vp8 was/is running ok, the table in question is running but without the table graphics and lights, ihave tried downloading all the roms which is my next step, unless you can see any schoolboy errors Im doing, cheers

Don't worry, if you don't have the correct ROM set in your ROMs folder:
If you start a table and VPM doesn't find the correct ROM set for it, it will stop and open a "Game Info" window, the line "ROM set" name tells you exactly which ROM set is expected but missing, so you can download and add it to your roms folder. The line "ROM directory(s)" tells you where VPM expects it to be - verify that this is the folder you have set up as the ROMs folder, and put the ROM zip file there. Next time you start the table it will work. (taken from the Installation Guide)

A quick clarification question....I assume it does not matter if you download all of the ROMs for a table and have them in your ROM folder? Will the table automatically just choose the correct ROM? Or will the multiple versions of the ROM cause conflicts and therefore it's better to pair up the table to the correct ROM?
Thanks

Since the script for the table usually designates which ROM to use, there should be no conflicts if you have more than one version of a ROM in that directory.

Multiple versions are just fine.

Yes multiples are fine, even if they don't go to anything. The only one that is important is the one it's asking for.

Great topic and glad I was reading through before I posted my version of this thread. I do have a question in that if I download VP8, VP9, future pin and add all the corosponding tables to them into hyperpin would hyperpin show all tables to be selected? I'm still new to all this and have read through the geting started page a few times and still kinda confused....I am so happy all of this exists....

Yes to VP9 cabinet tables and Future Pinball.
I don't think VP8 can run in a cabinet.

I thought I saw a thread on which VP8 tables would run fine under VP9....but now am guessing that the compatibility only applies to the desktop version of the tables and would be incompatible with a VP9 Cabinet. Is this a correct assumption?
EDIT:
Nevermind - I just ran across the http://www.pinsimdb.org/ site. I had made an assumption that all tables were available at VPforums.org. So the next question: Are there other sites besides VP.org & Pinsimdb.org that has tables that the others do not?
Thanks!

There are quite a few other sites that have pins here are but a few:
http://www.pinball-originals.com/
http://www.pinballnirvana.com/
http://www.futurepinball.com/
http://www.public.as...ginals-old.html
this last one has many broken links in it though
as all of the tables on that site were made prior to 2005 so they are all vp8 or older possibly even made with vp6
but pins made in vp6 will work in vp8
hope this helps ya' a bit
while there may be pins made with vp8 that will run in vp9 it is not recommended
as the differences within the two programs may cause problems when trying to run an older table in vp9
yeah you may luck out with a non ramped table (ramps and ball lanes are the worst culprits since in vp9 the ball size is larger
so it may hang up on either a ramp or in a ball lane)
but there are other differences too which were not crossed over from vp8 to vp9
or are new to vp9.1.2 such as alpha ramps and such so pins made in vp8 may or may not work
but for the most part pins made with vp8 should only be run with vp8
same as pins made with vp9 they should be run with vp9 only

Awesome! Thanks for the links - I guess I'm going to be doing a lot of downloading/configuration this weekend.
As for the VP8 tables - I guess that I will just skip them as I'm 80% done on my cabinet and am just trying to do some work/configuration on the PC while I am awaiting some parts.
Thanks again!

ok, i have installed everything according to the tutorial. Now I am having an issue where I open both vp8-vp9 by double clicking the pinball symbol and the programs cant find the table Ive downloaded (back to the future). I downloaded the rom file, left it zipped and put it in the vpinmame rom folder. I downloaded the .vpt file unzipped and put it in the table folder. after messing aroung for a while I got the tables (both bttf and the top speed table it came with) to get into vp9, even though I have no clue how I did it. Top Speed ran and played fine, but bttf came up fine in the editor but kept running into errors...I appologize if this isnt the right place to put this, but I would love any and all comments and help. Thank you all so much
edit: I changed out the Rom for bttf n now it works fine. But every time I open vp9, then click the open tab under file it closes the program. I'm sure I'm making a rookies mistake, any thoughts? ?
