Hello -
I just finished installing visual pinball on my Mame machine which has a 4:3 monitor. While I'd like to try to get the flipper controls to work with virtual pinball (don't know if that is possible) my main issue now is seeing if I can flip the configuration so the pinball table displays the vertical way instead of horizontal. Is this possible and how would I do it?
Thank you!

No flipping required. Use desktop tables. Links in the red navbar above.
To get your buttons to work with your flippers, you'll need a program like XPadder to translate button pushes to keystrokes.

Thanks for the quick response. I have downloaded a few of the desktop versions of the tables but they display horizontally not vertically. Maybe I need to explain further. My Mame cabinet has controls for both horizontal and vertical games. For games like pinball I'd like to sit on the vertical side (same side I'd sit on for vertical scrolling arcade games like Galaga). But the pinball screen displays so I would need to sit and use the horizontal controls instead. Any way to change that?

Your choices are Desktop and Fullscreen.
Fullscreen are for cabinets.
Can you up a pic of your cab and a table from both types playing?
It'll just be a matter of changing the rotation settings in the Backdrop portion of the editor most likely. Some tables, though, aren't that easy to rotate, if reels are used.

Well I must be an idiot b/c I can't even get my 2 pics to upload. I continually get a warning message that says this....

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

The filesize is way too big.
Must be under 4MB, I think it is.
Try reducing the images.

I think this mean you have a 4x3 monitor and you would like to play tables turned vertically on it. If so, look at this thread below. Some of the info may be outdated as we now have settings to not stretch the ball and we have a layback setting, but it might be helpful to you and you will find a place to start from, if this is what you are trying to do.

I think I got it now. The first pic is what it looks like now. The 2nd pic is how I'd like to play it if I could get it rotated to display the vertical way.

You can't play it from the opposite side of pic 2?
That would be how the Fullscreen tables would display.

I think what Bob posted up above may be what I am looking for. It does play just fine like shown in pic 1....just thought it would look better if it was rotated and stretched vertically like a real pinball game. thanks for the help.

This looks like it may be what I am looking for. Looks pretty involved unfortunately but perhaps I'll give it a shot. Thanks so much.

Maybe it's me who is confused ...
Are you talking about DMD rotation?
If you run a fullscreen table, is it upside down?

when I run a full screen table it looks like picture 1. And it works fine. I'm new to this so I can't say I know what DMD rotation is. Would just like to sit down and play it like picture 2 if I can get it rotated to display correctly but you'll notice in the picture that it's displaying the horizontal way not vertical.

Pic 1 is a Desktop table, not Fullscreen.
Fullscreen would look something like this ...

The left side of the cab is actually the bottom of the monitor.
I think you'll find what you're looking for under 'Visual Pinball Cabinet' tables above.

Yes, that might be what I need. I'll take a look and try one of them. I'm wondering though if I'll be able to see the score and other game info since I don't actually have the 2nd monitor like in the picture you displayed.

I tried to download one of the fullscreen tables like you suggested in the hopes that it would play vertically in my cabinet. Here is the error I'm getting when I try to play the table.
Line 192
Object doesn't support this property or method: 'TAF.MaxBallSpeed'
Is there a way I can troubleshoot this error with your assistance? Thank you!

Please disregard....found the issue. I need to play this in VP9. Looks great so far! Thanks much. Now I just need to figure out how to use my flipper buttons on the side instead of my shift keys on the keyboard. I'll work on that next.

ya' coulda' just opened with, "I converted a cocktail cab into a vert/horizontal pin cab and can't get the pins to look right!"
We all know a cocktail sit down cab when we see it!
but that looks cool! how do you switch the screen from vert to horizontal?
and can you then rotate it all through 360 degrees so a person on every side of the table could then play, without getting up and moving?

I downloaded some of the full screen cabinet versions of the pins.....then it displays vertical. Unfortunately, I'm seeing some strange gameplay and some of the graphics on the tables (full colors don't display) aren't correct. I'm assuming this could be my run of the mill graphics card. So unless I upgrade there I might have to play them the horizontal way using the VP8 versions. Are there VP8 versions that are full screen cabinet size? I only see VP9 versions of them.
I would LOVE for the screen to flip but I haven't gotten that far yet. Still need to look into that and I'm also still using the keyboard keys to play the pins.....not sure how yet to invoke the controls on the actual game cabinet instead. Any ideas there let me know!

On the FS versions, experiment with checking/unchecking "hardware devise rendering" -- go to preferences -- video options. Also try running your full screen resolution in 16 bit rather than 32.

I appreciate the suggestion on using XPadder. Do you know how this will work exactly when I try to use XPadder and the Ultimarc I-Pac together? I have each joystick and button programmed to a keyboard button for the I-Pac for all of the Mame arcade games. Now I'm going to put XPadder on the machine as well and try to program these same buttons to different keyboard buttons for VP. So I'm wondering what will happen when I press a certain button and the I-Pac thinks it's a letter 'M' on the keyboard but the XPadder thinks it's a right shift instead. Understand what I am saying? Know anybody that has experience in setting something like this up?
Thank you!
