I got Windows 7 last year and could get mt tables to work properly. I asked for help in this forum and only got people saying things like 'Yeah Windows 7 is a problem'. Nothing really helpful if you know what I mean. I cant seem to find any tutorials that would help me.
I think the problem might be Im running on x86. Ive tried running on compatibilty mode but it just gives me the same error messages Script not found etc. Vpin itself working properly it just seems to be the MAME object.
Im a bit of a noob so if you've got any suggestions, please dont talk in programmer talk because I wont know what you're on about i.e.
Are you running XYZ?
Have you got ABC installed?
You need to move AB to CD

I don't have "7" but the biggest thing I can think of (have seen) is run vp as administrator. I know other people run "7" without a problem so it can be done, that's the biggest thing I can think of.

Sorry, it is impossible to help you with out proper data. You cant say "it doesnt work" and expect help. You must give exact errors. Not some vague description with "etc" on it. Windows 7 works just fine. My cabinet is built around windows 7. So, if you would like to try again and give a detailed description of the steps you have taken and your problem, again, in detail with proper errors (not paraphrased, but exact) then maybe someone can help you.

Listen, if you cant even understand questions like "have you got ABC installed" then wow, it will be impossible to help you. This is not programmer talk. It's expected of someone that has basic computer skills. I am really not trying to be rude, but how do you expect someone to help you if you consider "have you got xxxx installed" "programmer talk"?

I wrote the Installation Guide with extra information according to my experience with my Win7/32bit installation (which works fine with VP btw) so the descriptions there should work for you, if you run the 32bit version. Unfortunately I couldn't try the Win7/64bit version yet...

That was not being troll, it was being honest, a bit brutal but perhaps warranted. None the less, I have have Hyperpin, Future Prinball and Visual Pinball all running on 2 different Windows 7 x86 (64 bit) computers. It works fine. You just need to follow the guides. It is easy to make a mistake even following the guides. Just go back through the guide and make sure everything is how it is suppose to be. You will find your error(s) and be on your way.
Standard install guide: http://vpforums.org/...d...l&f_id=2990
Install guide for HyperPin, Visual Pinball, and UVP Active Backglass: http://www.vpforums....u...l&f_id=4070
The only thing you have to do different during the installs on Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit) is right clicking the executables files (VPinball.exe), select Compatibility tab, in the Compatibility mode box check mark "Run this program in compatibility mode for:", select Windows XP (Service Pack 3) in the drop down if it does not default to it, then at the bottom of this window in the Privilege Level box check mark "Run this program as an administrator".

Good luck. If you have problems post back with specific error messages.

What I actually meant was by not talking in programmer talk is dont use initials when describing things because like I said Im a bit of a n00b and a page full of abbreviations just confuses the brain. i get what VP means, and VPF, and MAME but anything other than that. Someone just pmed me a link to an installation guide, I went to print it out because I find it easier to read from paper than the screen and found that it was 12(!!) pages long and most of it was made up with pretty useless information. I don't know about anyone else but when I come to useless facts in guides I tend to just skip over them and end up missing out stuff I need to know.
Once I figure out how to get VP up and running I'd be happy to write a compact, n00b friendly guide that only gives you the bare facts of what to do and nothing more.
I'm sorry for bitchin but I just narked that I got a better computer and after a year Ive still not got VP working and I had it working perfectly on XP before that.

I find all of the guides to be very useful. While some of the info my seem trivial and not applicable to you or your situation it will undoubtedly help someone along the way. HG's guide is very thorough and I appreciate that.

If you had it working perfectly with XP, install it the very same way you did then.
Then right click on the VP8 Or VP9 (or both), go to compatibility & check run this program as an administrator.Save, et voilà! If this does not work, uninstall, go to the installation guide, no need to print , with alt/ tab, you can switch from one window to another, follow the guide rigourously, step by step, & voilà!
Happy pinballing!
If you still have problems, go to the beginning of my answer, (or other member´ answers} , follow the advices, et voila!
Happy pinballing!
Experience, I mean hit & miss "technique" thaught me the above.

Yeah, but would you have been able how to figure out how to send a donation without printing off pages of instructions?
I feel so sorry for you bwood & can understand the aggresive tone of your last post - it's so unfair that someone spent their free time creating a guide to follow that tells people exactly what to do to install all of this, then hosted it online for free so anyone could view it at any time at no cost - what idiots for not creating a printable version for those unable to look at a computer screen.
Anyway Bwood, you're lucky - you've only printed out the installation instructions - what about me, I got it all working & have spent an absolute fortune printing out each game so that I can play them without using my pc screen.
(sorry - just read back my post & realised you won't understand this..."pc" means "personal computer" - sorry for using such technical language abbreviations).

Dan.

Now the IG has grown, but one can still easily concentrate on the 1. Standard Installation part if you just want to install it.
And, rest assured that the IG will change it's appearance when changes are necessary or requested - feel free to PM me with proposals how to make it better!

Dont worry my new website will be up and running soon. Although I dont do abbreviations I know enough to create an installer that will install Vpin and Mame in one click. I dont see the point in having both seperate never have that just complicates matters. And a guide which is just a plain simple text file. It has been proven that black writing off a black background is the simplest to read, and that the brain can only handle 7 pieces of information at the same time. So in other words when you're trying to read a page where theres ads flashing you right in the face in big colourful graphics, it makes the task almost impossible for some people.
I put my hands up and give them credit for all theyve done, the creators of the programs, but its just the presentation from this website. You would have a lot more people willing to visit your site, a lot more people willing to pay to join if it were simpler to understand. Its like someone who's never even heard of MAME and wants to play their favourite pinball would just turn around 'Yuk' because of all the complicated steps, which may seem simple to the know-it-alls on here, but hard to concieve for them.
And I know the newbies just get slated on here by the so called know-it-alls, who band together and attack people who aren't as bright as them. The admins don't seem to care, maybe a little biased because perhaps these know-it-alls are their friends in real life or have been around for years.
Oh yeah and to show that I'm actually appreciative of peoples work. I'll pay THEM for their submission. Not just post a loads of 'thank you' and credits everywhere that people just ignore anyway unless they actually know the person. This is also what makes me suspect everyone in this website has got their own cleeky little group and they don't like outsiders.
Reminds me of a little texas village with a single gas station.

I think you'll probably find that the repsonse you get is more to do with your attitude when you come in here - your comment of "Well I was gonna donate but since the guides cost me so much in printer ink I wont bother. Consider that." I found really quite rude, hence the tone of my reply.
I think you'll find that people that are polite, and humble, and ask for help in that manner get a very patient response here from a great many people - whether that is to do with getting VP/VPM up & running, or creating their own tables, or anything to do with pinball - virtual or real.
I think you'd probably find the same in real life - enter a new domain to you of an established community and have a rude or arrogant attitude & you'll get a similar response.
Regards,
Dan.

So, let me get this straight. All you've said in your opening post here is "I can't play VP on Windows 7" with a short description of an error that could mean pretty much anything when it comes to VP. A bit more information might help with actually solving the problem.
And I really doubt we need an easier installation guide. Are you saying you can't follow this:
From then on, VP and VPM should be installed and ready to go. All you need is a table and a ROM which go in their respective folders ("tables" and "roms", obviously). Then you start the correct version of Visual Pinball - you should have VPinball.exe and VPinball_9_0_2.exe - VPinball.exe is Visual Pinball 8 and VPinball_9_0_2.exe is Visual Pinball 9. The table I posted was made for Visual Pinball 9, so you start the corresponding program. You load the table and then start it - that should be all to it.
If you've correctly tested that it works, then you do this:
And then you should have a fully functioning, fully updated installation of Visual Pinball.
The McD
And I really doubt we need an easier installation guide. Are you saying you can't follow this:
QUOTE
In this chapter the term VP folder will describe the folder or directory on your harddrive where you install VP and VPM. The default path of this VP folder is C:\Program Files\Visual Pinball (in Windows7 64bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Visual Pinball), but during installation you can specify its location on your harddrive, so you may want to write down its path for later reference, because you will install or add more files to this VP folder later.
Download the VP Installer 1.0.3, execute it, read and follow the messages, and you're (almost) done! Help files are included, they are found in the 'Help documents' folder inside the VP folder, after the VP Installer has finished.
Once the VP Installer has finished, open the VP folder and do the following:
Windows Vista and Windows7 users: right-click the VPinball.exe file inside the VP folder and choose “Run as administrator” from the context menu.
All Windows versions (recommended): right-click the VPinball.exe inside the VP folder, choose "Preferences", from there go to "Compatibility", check "Compatibility mode" and choose "Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5)" from the drop-down menu. Confirm and exit.

If you've correctly tested that it works, then you do this:
QUOTE
Perform these steps:
• download VP 9.1.0 Standalone (VPinball910_Minimal.zip) to a temporary folder on your harddrive.
• open it by double-clicking and extract the contained files VPinball.exe and FreeImage.dll to a temporary folder, rename VPinball.exe to e. g. VPinball910.exe and copy it together with the dll file into the VP folder. Do NOT extract the zipped file to the VP folder directly, as it would overwrite the present vpinball.exe, which is VP8.1!.
The rename/copy procedure adds the latest VP9 release to your installation.
• create a link to it on your desktop
• according to your Windows version, apply the "run as administrator" and "compatibility mode" settings to VPinball910.exe, as described earlier.
• download VPinMAME 2.3 (vpinmame_23.zip) and double-click it to open it in a window.
• from that window copy just the VpinMAME.dll file to the VPinMAME subfolder in your VP folder. Overwrite the file by the same name. This updates your installation to the latest VPM version.
VP8 and VP9 use the same VPM version.
• open the VPinMAME subfolder inside the VP folder, double-click Setup.exe. This will open a window. Verify that the 3rd line in this window reads “Visual PinMAME Version 2.3 is currently installed on your computer”, then quit. If the displayed version is not 2.3, click 'Install', follow the prompts, then quit.
• you may delete the (outdated) VPinball_9_0_2.exe from the VP folder and its link from your desktop. You have added the latest VP9 version in a previous step.
• create a new subfolder by the name 'Music' inside the VP folder. Some table zip or rar files contain mp3 files that will have to be stored in this Music folder and will be used during play of the specific table.
• download the VBS Scripts v3-32 and extract the contained files into your Tables folder, overwrite the vbs files there. This will update and add the latest versions of the script files.
• Install the Font Collection 3.8 for Visual Pinball. In Windows XP it is ok to unzip all fonts to a temporary folder, open it, select all fonts and copy them to C:\Windows\Fonts. In Windows 7 you rather select all fonts inside the temp folder, right-click one of them and choose 'Install' from the context menu.
If in doubt about how to add fonts, consult Windows Help or other sources for the proper procedure according to your Windows version.
The default location of the fonts folder is C:\Windows\Fonts. Some of the fonts from the collection may already have been installed earlier, answer the corresponding messages accordingly.
And then you should have a fully functioning, fully updated installation of Visual Pinball.

Regards,
Dan.

I'll second that. I've seen nothing but nice here unless someone "starts in on them". No one's given me any problems and I knew next to nothing when I started here. The way I met Faralos is I asked how to put post a picture and he responded. That was the level of my knowledge at the time. Soon I shall rule the world (while petting cat on my lap). I admit sometimes we all don't think about what we say because we're not speaking directly (physically) to that person. Myself included. Essentially you get out what you put in.

Yeah well I cant help feeling Im being shunned on this website not only because people think Im a newbie but because I don't own a pinball machine. I can't afford one or the space to keep one. I am unemployed and get £600 a month without taking off expenses. Don't you think I'd love to come on here and go on about my very own Star Trek TNG or Baywatch pinball machine? I can't, and probably never will.
I live in the north of Scotland. Very rarely do you see pinball machines here as they've all been taken over by 'X Factor' and £250 slot machine. I am very grateful to the creators of Vpin because at least in some fasion I can feed my passion for pinball I had in the 90s and have missed so dearly there were pinball machines EVERYWHERE at that time, but those kinds of arcades are all dying out as we all know.
I guess I'm just a little impatient to get it running sorry. :hugs:

lol -
should've realised you were just a gruff scotsman! (joke!)
Anyhoo - I know the north of Scotland can really mean the back of beyond, but I know there is a small community in Scotland that organise some meetings etc & if you're anywhere Aberdeen there's definately a few people that way that'd help you out with playing some real pinball
Check out these links for more UK specific info:
Pinformer - a list of all the machines that are currently known about on sites in the UK
UK Pinball League - want a chance to play real pinball, with real people? Get involved in the league, it's mostly just for fun and a bit of socialising, but if you want to take it really seriously you could
UK Pinball Group - the place where UK pinballers chat, post help, organise league & other meetings, offer machines for sale etc.
As for getting VP/VPM up & running...honestly...go through the guide, if there's a specific part you don't understand, then ask about that in as much detail as you can & you'll get all the help you need.
Regards,
Dan.

Impatience can be a let down, happens to the best of us .
Take a deep breath, take your time, read the info carefully, double check,
it is worth it in the long run.
Ive learnt quite a bit since being here also.
Took a few weeks, months of reading, then had to learn how to post.
Now i know heaps more.
