I think I am going to wait for when The Pinball Arcade is on a Steam sale. No excuse for typos. :D

It's never going to be on sale. I can almost guarantee that, because the tables aren't stocked in the regular Steam store, and are instead "items" sold akin to the items in TF2's cash shop. And while there have been sales on TF2 items, I doubt the same thing is going to happen with TPA's tables, especially because the prices are also written into the game. Beyond the cheaper bundles, you're SOL.

I noticed the pricing ingame and it didn't sink in for me at that point. At least I will wait for the bugs to be worked out before taking the plunge. PA currently is doing a 'Bethesda' (Elder Scrolls (pre Skyrim) and Fallout series) when it comes to stability in their programming, but at least they WILL get it fixed instead of just letting it be.  :D

Kristian, try latest Sorcerer table, under mods, because god knows you can't have a mod where people can find them. :)

Yeah, I looked that up after I made the post. Farsight doesn't do sales, it seems, which sets the current price of The Pinball Arcade roughly at 70€ (which is roughly equivalent to 95$) - with it only growing over time - and considering the issues that exist on launch, that's a pretty hefty price. There's some fairly basic stuff that somehow got screwed up, and considering the delays the PC version went through, it's kind of weird it ended up in this state.

Farsight can't do much sales due to the licensing but who knows? That may change.

Kristian: not sure if there is a desktop version and I m on my way to work, but try his BMPR mod of firepower if there is a desktop versiom. its the best playing firepower on virtual pinball anywhere and I should know, I own a real firepower. ;).

I'm the biggest VP fan on earth... always have been.... spent my childhood playing real pinball... authored/co-authored 50 VP tables... there is no way I'd easily side with a commercial product.... but Pinball Arcade is simply better... I don't understand how you guys don't see it. Maybe I'm wrong... or maybe, just maybe it's like finally divorcing your fat, nagging old wife.... too big and bold step to make. :D

Not the biggest fan if you compare the old VP8 to PB. ;)

There has been so much progress in Vp lately about the program and tables.

While I find the two tables available to me (TOTAN / T2) rather easy, beating my real life high scores by millions, I have to say I am really enjoying the gameplay and the physics.  That being said, I will hold off purchasing the remaining tables on the PC platform until cabinet support has been clarified.  Once the path to cabinet support is clear, I will definitely buy the pro seasons pass for my home-brew pin-cab.

Also, just a friendly reminder to those who dislike the table scrolling, hitting C while ingame will change the view and V will stop the table scrolling.

Best Regards,

Todd.

Thanks Bob. I'll try it... I've been out of the loop for too long. My son is now 3... will be 4 in February. I've been busy.

And yeah... those VPFF days were something else. That was as cool as it gets.

Actually Kristian...If you do get a chance to try the above mentioned tables using the BMPR mods, i 'd really like to hear what you think.

It took me a little while to get used to the BMPR but they are truly gems to be honest. The ball weight and physics seem much more real to me than PA's...but I do not have a real table. I have a cheap brunswick super star that has 3 real balls, but that is all I will agree to as real :) :)  so I would like to hear what you think in comparison to some real tables. I know comparing VP to real or whatever is not the way to go, but I am not thinking perfect matches, just curious as to what emulation is 'closest' to real currently. Welcome back!

Cheers,

Maceman

Eh, compared to Kristian, you really are a new guy in the VP world. I'm a new guy, pretty much everybody here is a new guy. There's only a few guys here that were around way back around the time Kristian is talking about. The VPFF days - almost sounds mythic, and it almost is, really.

My biggest worry is that the developer is Farsight. They've already proven themselves to be pretty poor coders when it comes to stability and bugs. Even after more than a year of development there are still some serious bugs and issues on the iPad/android releases.. even simple stuff like typos on the playfield (they've happened several times before) took ages to fix. They are also apparently without any beta testers because it's not uncommon to find a lot of annoying bugs after only 5 or 6 minutes of playing.. and this is on a semi-closed system like the iPad.

I don't have too much hope in Pinball Arcade but it has a lot of potential.. it did since day one but Farsight has failed over and over to prove their talent. In fact, they've proven quite the opposite when it comes to graphics, GUI design and code management. Still, because they are the only ones doing this it means we don't have much of a choice but to support them. Luckily the actual ball and flipper physics seem pretty decent (once you eliminate the input lag) and quite believable in most cases.

I'm still betting my money on Pro Pinball Timeshock, even though it's not a real table it's still THE king in my opinion. The best design of a flipper table ever. Had it been a real machine it'd be a classic.. probably one of the top rated ones.

It was a huge soap opera... war between two forums. The old VPF (it was like a church) and the VPFF (with all the crazy guys and productivity). This was 2001 and 2002 (I think).

But definitely a great time for VP... lots of new stuff... for me the biggest thing was to got Williams System1 working and me and Destruk released Black Knight, Pharaoh, Solar Fire and Jungle Lord (unfinished) all in one day. PacDude released new tables virtually every week. I worked 7 days a week... HOURS every day for the VP stuff... we were like men obsessed... we had a "mission".

Technically the tables weren't as good as they're now... but we pushed the envelope quite far (within the limitations that we had). No good source material, etc.

VPFF was a crazy place. Half of the members were some kind of weirdos... Bob was one of the "normal" guys which speaks volumes... flame wars every week... porn... gossip. And if old boring whiners like Shiva came over.... we simply flamed his ass. Very good times.

Thanks... I'll definitely give them a shot.

I stopped following after most new releases were for cabinet mode only. I'm not interested in the cabinet stuff, really... not at this point anyway. I've played some new VP9 tables... very impressive work. All stuff by JPSalas is just amazing... the guy is a genius. But like I said, some ancient VP8 tables still play more authentic than the new "revisions".

I think it'd be a great feature in VP to be able to detect the old VP8 tables and automatically switch to VP8 mode. I don't know if this is technically possible though.

Well, now I'm really frustrated. I figure I'll go and play a game of Scared Stiff to net the last standard challenge, and then I go on to have the game of my life, only for all the wizard challenges to not take because I only finished the standard challenges within that one game.

Challenges are as follows:

Score a 250K Beat The Crate Shot: Almost certain that happened multiple times, and I definitely did it once at least.

Start Monster Multiball: Did that. Three times.

Start Spider Mania: Did that. Two times.

Land in the Secret Passage: Did that. Somewhere around four to five times.

Finish Leaper Mania: Did that. Somewhere around ten times.

260 million, about a dozen or more extra balls, maxed out the Web Loops counter, scored a bonus that was larger than ten million at one point, but I'll have to repeat it because the game wasn't looking. This shouldn't be hard to code.

I don't want to keep harping on about this challenges thing being buggy and kind of poorly implemented, since it's technically "only achievements", but pinball in general boils down to comparing scores with others, so I might as well go for the achievements as well.

I think you're well within your rights to mention it, don't worry.

I'm gonna guess and say that people may never have seen the spider mania on real machine, myself included :db:

Is it just how the roms are set to super easy?

Not the ROMs, but the table is very friendly. It's not very tough to make shots. The difficulty is all over the place (CFTBL is another one I found to be fairly easy, whereas T2 seemed rather tough), but then again, I don't think it's really possible to keep that consistent from table to table.

I do recall that my dad once managed to make Spider Mania, and he's been playing Scared Stiffs for a while - it's his favorite pinball.

So the latest update adds Portrait mode. Now before everyone gets too excited it requires you to rotate your desktop to Portrait from Landscape. There is no in-game rotation. Still needs some work. Fine if you have a desktop with a 2nd monitor and you can rotate that 2nd screen and assign Pinball Arcade to the 2nd screen. On a cabinet its too much hassle to keep rotating the desktop.

Also - the flippers are cut-off in the new Portrait mode (which has to be fixed in a future update). lol...
