... it also seems like it won't be lightning fast afterwards

What won't be lightning fast afterwards?

Is that "direct" connection useful for that win 7 FXAA issue? :D

Just passed that on, too.. Although i guess the chances there are as high as succeeding with the Optimus request.. ;(

(NVIDIA usually only patches pre-DX10/DX9 stuff if absolutely necessary, or if it's low hanging fruit.. but maybe we are lucky)

So some news on the Optimus issue:

It seems like one of the problems VP causes (performance wise), is a lot of traffic from the NVIDIA GPU to the area where the display basically grabs the image for displaying it on the laptop screen.

-> slowness

The stunning thing (at least for me) though is that this effect can vanish if one connects an external display (that's why connecting f.e. a TV on f.e. my laptop speeds up things tremendously), as then the NVIDIA GPU can take over display directly.

I still need more info on this (i.e. what are the implications, which hardware combinations, blablabla), but that's the status for now.

I thought about the idea of creating a "Cheater" plug, but didn't know how to do it or if it would work, but basically a plug that goes into the HDMI port, emulating that a monitor is plugged in externally, when really there isn't one, thus causing the GPU to work corrctly with VP.

Obviously a better fix would be the driver :) but hey.

No, that's a misunderstanding. It's not about just plugging in "something", but about the port being used as -the actual output-.

It's pretty technical why exactly this is like that, but the sum-up is: Check the nvidia control panel ("set up multiple displays") and look at what the display in question is connected to. In case of the laptop display it should say something like "Intel xxxxxxxx", whereas if you connect something like a TV it should say "NVIDIA xxxxxxxx" (depending on the specific laptop of course this can also differ, so please check what it says there). If it says "NVIDIA xxxxxxx" then it should be fast on that connected display, if it says "Intel xxxxxxx" it should be slow, even if the actual -rendering- all happens on the NVIDIA GPU!

Unfortunately that's one of the sideeffects of the way of how VP renders stuff via DX7, and i doubt (from what i heard) that this can be fixed solely by the driver, as it seems to be a technical limitation of how Optimus works unfortunately. Standard games don't suffer from this (as they don't use some of the weird VP tricks/hacks), but VP unfortunately does.

EDIT: would be neat to get some confirmation from various ppl on this, so that we at least have some sane explanation for the issue in the future.

@ www.notebookreviews.com,   there are thousands of posts about Optimus not working correctly, not limited to VP but to a whole lot of other games, Same problems happen with ATI Hybrid Graphic system.  I have both unfortunately :thmbdn:

One can also check the connection (which display connects to which gfxboard) in the physx panel..

I just tried out the new 313.96 drivers and the problems are still here.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that the only way to solve this issue is to connect my optimus laptop to an external monitor or tv.

I was wondering if it were possible to "fake" a monitor so that the nvidia graphics are directly displayed on the screen rather than being passed through the intel gpu which is what is causing the problem in the first place.

That is what i was saying 2 or 3 posts above, but it looks like we cannot "cheat"!!!  I thought it was a good thought as well :)

@FD- Love the new avatar. Keep that one!!!!

Unfortunately this seems to be a real technical limitation, so no 'cheating'..

Well, you were referring to a "cheater plug,"  I was thinking that we could create a "virtual monitor" in software, and then redirect that video stream back to the laptop's display.  It appears that we are just going to have to wait for a real fix from Nvidia.  :)
