Minor progress - got all my inserts sanded down and polished - started with 120 grit, then 240, then 400, 800, 1500, 3000, and finished with 5000 grit and polishing compound (you'd think 800 grit would be good enough but it's not - they are still very "cloudy" looking - getting the other grits all lined up in a row made the process go pretty quick).  All the ejector pin marks, and letters on the inserts are gone and the inserts are ultra smooth, should make for good adhesion to the overlay.

Upper playfield has been primed, sanded and painted.  Overlay came in, this one is a translucent overlay as opposed to clear - since the upper playfield inserts are white anyway the translucency actually makes it look better than a clear overlay (which means I probably didnt need to prime and paint, but what the heck, it was good practice for when I have to do it on the main playfield.  Used 1 part isopropyl alcohol and 4 parts water in a spray bottle, sprayed the sticky side of the overlay, applied it to the playfield and then VERY aggressively squeegeed out all the air bubbles with a rigid rubber spreader.  End result is one fantastic looking upper playfield.  Need to drill a couple more mounting holes and then start populating it with the posts, targets, flippers and the columns.

More updates...  doesn't seem like a lot of progress, but it was a crap ton of work.  Ended up sanding the entire playfield, taping off what I wanted to paint (didn't want to paint the whole playfield as I still wanted to see some wood for a more authentic look), priming, sanding, and then painting with three coats.  After that I had to go back and sand out each and every hole and make them slightly oversized from the original cut - inserts were just slightly too tight which kind of made them bulge in the middle and I want this baby as flat as possible.

Ended up cutting a thick piece of clear plastic and rounded all the edges and corners to make installing the inserts easier/more precise.  Used a simple claw hammer to gently tap the inserts in place starting in the middle and then making sure all the edges were flush - the part to part variation on the inserts is horrible - what ever injection molder made these did a crap job of making them consistent and that goes for all the parts.  Last pic is a lame attempt at trying to show off the inserts with a backlight from above that didn't really come off that well, but oh well...

Should have my decal on Tuesday to be able to apply to the playfield.  After that it's whoa nellie, start stuffing the top and bottom of it and wire this baby up...

Actually, mameman, your CNC job was awesome.  I measured and hand test fit each and every insert before sanding on the cut-outs.  Your cuts were very consistent - the insert diameters were not...  A few of them fit absolutely perfectly with only sanding away the primer and paint that I added.  Makes me wonder if companies like STERN and JJP are molding their own inserts to a higher standard to deal with it.

Got the inks mostly finished on the new backglass...  time for some water color, colored pencil, and acrylic to color this baby up.

You would have to be happy with that. Very satisfying, hows the excitment level?

BG is a winner, cant wait to see the colors.

Nice work, living the dream. :otvclap:

Yeah, excitement is through the roof. Couldn't sleep last night and ended up applying the decal at about 3:00 in the morning. Took a little work but I think I got it on pretty straight and bubble free. Will find out tomorrow after everything has dried and I get to pull the top mask off... Thinking I'm gonna have some sleepless nights and a busy weekend.
