Minor progress - got all my inserts sanded down and polished - started with 120 grit, then 240, then 400, 800, 1500, 3000, and finished with 5000 grit and polishing compound (you'd think 800 grit would be good enough but it's not - they are still very "cloudy" looking - getting the other grits all lined up in a row made the process go pretty quick). All the ejector pin marks, and letters on the inserts are gone and the inserts are ultra smooth, should make for good adhesion to the overlay.
Upper playfield has been primed, sanded and painted. Overlay came in, this one is a translucent overlay as opposed to clear - since the upper playfield inserts are white anyway the translucency actually makes it look better than a clear overlay (which means I probably didnt need to prime and paint, but what the heck, it was good practice for when I have to do it on the main playfield. Used 1 part isopropyl alcohol and 4 parts water in a spray bottle, sprayed the sticky side of the overlay, applied it to the playfield and then VERY aggressively squeegeed out all the air bubbles with a rigid rubber spreader. End result is one fantastic looking upper playfield. Need to drill a couple more mounting holes and then start populating it with the posts, targets, flippers and the columns.
I'm holding a low power led flashlight behind the "Z" target in the photo...
