JP, I agree with you. But the main question is are you upset about people “stealing” from you? Every post I see, people thank you and praise what you have done for the community. Whatever happened before 5 years ago when I joined I have no clue but the way Paul speaks about you, it sounds like you are abused. I just wonder if you feel the same way

I never liked that patch system from vpu. It was a "shity" way to make mods of tables without asking the author.

I used the patching method and went through the method of asking permission when I made the Hybrid vp9 conversions. Personally, I thought it was a way to honor the original author by forcing the downloaders to first give the original author a download count, if the person didn't already have the said table. JP, you know that I sent you PM's with links to my hybrid view conversions of your tables in order for you to check them out and approve. I even talked to Paul about having a place to share them here. Paul's a busy guy and it just never happened. I hope you don't think I was doing the patches to underhandedly avoid asking permission. This made the downloaders work for the mod if they deemed it worthy, and it honors the original author with a download. I haven't seen anybody but myself, really use the patching system, so I feel kind of hurt and I never knew you felt that I was pulling something "shity".

Edit: At that time there was no section for Vp Single screen tables for vp9. No section for patches either. Now they are too old to even care about. Sorry, my friend if I stepped on your toes.

Not worth my time anymore

After reading the email notification, I can see what you posted before your edit. I can tell you there is absolutely ZERO content here hidden behind a paywall. That, my friend, is SELLING free content, and it would NEVER be done here.

You continue to defend the indefensible and support something that is truly reprehensible. Wow.

Although someone downloading more than 25 a day is either trying to build a collection overnight or copy the site's files.

I've downloaded 25 tables in a day, just looking for code function examples
and not even kept the 25 tables

thats why VPU is latest and greatest and this site looks the same as it did when I started this hobby

That, would be a matter of personal opinion
Personally, i dont like VPU's layout and function, too hard to navigate and find things.
VPF is not flashy or fancy, but it functions in a very logical manner, which is all i care about.
I'm not impressed by eye candy and bling bling, i'd take 1987 with logical functionality over pretty

That dont impress me much

PS you know it is annoying when you keep editing every post, i guess trying to make the responder look stupid
you realize we can see what you originally posted right?

I never even got it to work, on what i thought was a legit table update, tried it once, it broke the table :(

Wiesshund, I am not editing to try and pull anything over your head my friend. I am editing immediately and most of the time because I don’t think before I speak. I am going back, seconds later, to try and make a less harsh response. If you feel stupid then that is not my fault. I am not changing what I said after you reply. That would be unfair

After reading your knee-jerk post, which is usually the most honest, you're totally cool, and support, other sites taking and modifying our content without giving back, and selling it, too.

Seriously, dude. This is problematic, to say the least.

No, I'm not upset, as many people asked me for permission. Anyway my tables are free to mod, unless some co-author didn't want their work used in other tables. What I didn't like was the patch program, as it was a way to go around the author wishes.

Yes, I remember that, and I don't feel upset with your mods, since you asked me, I didn't liked the patch program, as it could be used to make mods without authors permission, otherwise it could have been just as easy to upload the modified table. I don't follow what happens at vpu so I don't know if that program was used a lot or by who. So, I had no problem with your mods :)

The problem I had with people uploading to other sites is because I got a lot of emails/pm asking me to fix this or that mod because something was not working, and I even didn't know that the mod existed. It was even worst when it was distribute through facebook.

But the patch program needs the original, unchanged table and the patch creates a local modification that doesn't automatically mean it's being distributed. So in that sense, it is not any different from someone changing the table to their liking for their own personal purpose, which Is always possible, regardless of whether mod of that table is allowed or not.

Not really true

The patch is being distributed, unless like just 2 guys traded it in a private chat or something, and then no one else in the world would know about it.
And so, the mod in essence is being distributed, but since it does not contain a complete archive, i guess doesnt get called a mod? and i guess wanders off into some grey area.

I am not even sure really, how a sysop is to review a "patch" to deem it worthy of approval or not, except to test every single one, by going to find the original, hope it is the right version, and then apply the patch to it i guess?

I would at least like to know that i have not just approved the child porn multiball version of Zelda or something

Eh, i'm getting off track.

Another bad thing about the patch Idea
Let's say i get permission to do a mod
Then later, the original author vanishes and takes their content with them, or the original location of the table goes and drops off a cliff like Randr's the site recently did.
Well, said patch is useless now as no one can get the original to apply it to, whereas, if the mod was just uploaded in complete form, at least something still exists

Sometimes I think, I'm in "kindergarten" when Paul posts his rants again. He keeps pouring oil on the fire.
Sometimes it's better, to just be quiet. :bye2:

To the VIP section at VPU:
There are indeed 18 files there!

Thereof 5 tables. The authors themselves wanted it that way and published them there. So it is not correct, what Paul writes.
The other files there are a few toppers and videos.

I find the website of VPU also a bit confusing, but in contrast to VPF it is a blessing.
VPF looks like the 90s, for me it is also very cluttered and the search function is a pure disaster.
And there is still this vote to the Windows version with Windows NT, ME etc. in the portal. Throw this crap out for once.
If I cared about a community, I would first create the site according to today's standards and equip it with user-friendly additional functions.

The new "Updated MOD Rules and Guidelines" are terrible for authors.
They have no control over their publishing anymore. Anyone can basically do whatever they want.

That was just a short statement from me. I won't write anything else on the subject either; so don't expect a response from me.

It would be nice, if everyone in the community would pull together. There are not many of us and if there is already a war going on in this small community, it sends a clear message to our society today.

Rant? I never thought I'd see the day this community would be okay with what's going on. I have been silent, for years, as person after person demands removal of MODs of 'their' work removed only to trace it back to 'free to MOD' content only available here, and they didn't give back in the first place! It's only proper to give back to a freeware, shared community, yet it hasn't been happening. Why is that? Well, that's why the MOD rules have changed, and it wasn't a conclusion I came to on my own, let's get that straight. JP and I discussed it at length. Even in his recent post in this topic, even though he's not mad, he points out he'd still like MODs of his work shared here.

Now, content is essentially for sale, and that's okay? When people are commenting publicly tables are ONLY available if you give a site cash, whether it's 18 or 1800, it's selling content. The whole scheme there is selling, no matter how you slice it.

The irony here is, I've been accused, by Dazz, of doing everything he's doing right now. Lol. I guess it IS true ... everything others accuse you of, they themselves are doing. Kinda looking like he's claiming ownership, to me. It's a nice swerve, that's for sure, but that's our society today. :)

So, in closing, as I would like to get back to our regularly scheduled program. Everyone has a choice, and no one can control what others do, so let's make it simple ...

You can support the 100% free site that was built by those who made this all possible, or you can support the site that got its start by taking, from here, content without permission, hosting unauthorized MODs to get started, and now, for all intents and purposes, selling tables. It's as simple as that.
