This is awesome! What would be cool is if you had a primitive zamboni to go around and clean the ice between rounds.

This is looking really good!
Do you have any recommended settings for full screen in a cab? Also, do you possibly have a directb2s backglass for the table? Maybe the scoreboard background currently used in desktop mode could be used for db2s?

Thanks! I thought about that actually :) In my air hockey game I had a zamboni clean the ice, and it actually cleaned it, as it would scuff up during play. I like little details.

This quote got deleted so had to re-paste:

Thanks for the compliments everyone! I don't know anything about using tables in a cab yet. I'm kind of a newb with VP even though I made this table. I'd like to make it compatible. I don't know what directb2s is, please tell me, but if it's something cool that I can do then maybe I can.

Please explain if you can. I feel like I should have done this in VPX but I THOUGHT I had physics issues with it - before I found out about the filter option for joysticks. Duh.

Maybe I can convert it later. I'd like to make this good enough for people to want to have on their cabs or arcades, so I'm open to those ideas. I just need to know what they are :) (big dumb smiley goes here)

Now the table just needs some more life. I need some kind of flashy "thing" for when you win a game. Can't do fireworks or change the lighting on the fly (I think), so maybe some flashing lights and a good loud pinball voice "You're the division champs!!!"

Maybe I can make each team progressively more difficult. Just a little - maybe an extra player/drop target on the ice during certain times maybe.

By the way (I'm probably repeating myself) the defense have 4 or 5 strategies depending on the situation. During power plays there will be 3 or 4 dudes in your zone and clearing the puck out can be difficult, which is good. If the other team is losing they will put more pressure on you (more drop-dudes) and if they are winning they will back off and maybe put an extra player in front of their own net.

Question: Is the backdrop/scoreboard I designed used on a cabinet setup? Would/could it be the backglass? If so I will make it a lot cooler, it's blank behind the table.

I don't find myself trying to get power plays too much. I may make them more rewarding, like maybe block your own net during it, or something else. Maybe the goalies stay down when you hit them all?

By the way, does anybody care about or even notice the score? Not the hockey but the player/pinball score?

So I looked up this DB2s because I had no idea what it is.

Can I convert my existing scoreboard background into this type of back glass?

@schplurg : I must say you've done a really good job with this table. Much better than what I first expected. Unfortunately, since it is a VP9, it isn't a easy way to make it available for cabinet users. Normally I yell a bit to guys making VP9 when VPX is an alternative. In this case table physics isn't as important as on a regular pinball so it is fine. But, if you plan to extend this table. I think you are doing yourself a disservice continuing on VP9 since VPX is much easier to work with.

Anyway. Thumbs up to you.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

I agree with Thalamus here. If you want or plan to extend this to cabinet users and there is any way to develop the table in VPX, that would be awesome.

Either way, the table is looking good! As for the db2s backglass, I believe your scoreboard can be used for the backglass. Others that have created them such as Hauntfreaks, STAT and other could let you know for sure.

Very unique and fun game to play.   I got a ball stuck in my bench and it kept trying to get kicked out but never does, had to reset.  Really like how original this idea is and is quit a bit of fun.  +1 for VPX version, +1 for b2s as cab users need these

Hey!

I did want to use VPX but I thought it was broken. Dummy me.

I recently imported this table into VPX and the lighting was wonky and the table seemed stretched, maybe. Slightly vertically I thought, maybe not.

I had some script errors as I recall. Nothing I can't fix I'm sure.

I think I will finish it in VP9 then try and update it for X. It's almost finished so may as well. I didn't even think I'd share this when I started it, but ya if people are interested I'd like to do it.

Can anyone give me any tips on converting it to VPX? I'd guess the lighting is different, as far as scripting goes. Anything I should look out for? Texturing maybe?

Also, would it be possible to DIY this into a real table? I have good wood skills (the easy part), I've set up MAME cabinets. I'm wondering if there are PC/USB solutions for the drop-targets etc. or "Ulti-marc" type stuff? It's a simple table in pinball terms so thought I'd ask.

Anyways, this thing is so close to done. I did all the play by play stuff but I'm not happy with it. Gotta redo it. If it sounds bad I'll leave it out, but I've done voice stuff before myself, and hired a voice actor for my iOS game.

Thanks for the comments, it's motivating!!! I'm glad you all like it so far.

Oh the "stuck in the player bench" bug is fixed. Next version. I've made a lot of improvements.

ETA:

I just discovered the P-Roc pinball controller!

Oh heck ya I love this stuff! I made games and mods/levels long before I ever got paid to do it, and now I'm back at that again.

I want to do the VPX version but I don't want to start from scratch. If the conversion process isn't too bad then I will do it.

I think I will work on sound effects today. There isn't enough feedback when you hit triggers and open doors and all that. Game needs a bit more liveliness.

Maybe I can upload something later. I probably should since I've made a lot of changes.

As of now:

-  you can play up to a 3 game championship. If you win you advance.

- You get some not too great, yet very satisfying flashers if you win a game.

- some iffy announcer voices.

- Changed that little railing up near the top right faceoff circle into a ramp, then finally into a wall. Whatever. I like its function even though it looks out of place.

- I thought of adding indicators onto the back glass, like what round you are currently playing, and maybe the scores of the games you've won, like box scores.

- I should add a bonus for shutouts and hat tricks.

- I don't like most of the lights, including the look of the penalty meter, but ??? dunno.

- I'd like the game to add up bonuses at the end like a regular pinball machine.

- I'd LOVE a multipuck mode, but I can't think of a way to implement it. Like if there are four pucks on the ice they can only go in either your goal or the opponents. Most likely more would drain down your own goal I would think, so I don't see a real advantage!

BIG POSSIBLY COOL IDEA:

Maybe Multipuck IS the power play and any pucks that go down the drain don't count against you. A Power Play would mean 3 pucks and 3 chances to score! Power Play ends when all pucks leave the playfield, or all but one maybe.

What do you think of that? In fact I made the player benches initially so that I could collect pucks for multipuck until I realized it was a bad idea.

HMMMMM.....???

Edit:

I'm thinking you get one puck in each penalty box and the doors stay shut. Then when the penalty meter is full or maybe when you get in a fight on their player bench, the pucks shoot out of the penalty boxes and you get multipuck.

Gotta have Multipuck, right? If for no other reason than just to have the game say "MUUUUULLL-TI PUUUUUCK!!!!"

You should contact 32a. I hope and believe he is willing to help you at least getting started with converting this to a "modern" VP.

I will soon, thanks for the tip! I know that if I try and convert it now or even look into it I'll get sidetracked and never finish this ;)

Does anyone know if the LightSources can be adjusted on the fly? I'm assuming no, I can't find anything online.

I've designed a few trophies/primitives that rise slowly out of the ice if you win them. I can fiddle with the lightsources and make a spotlight on the trophies, but I doubt I can alter any of that in real time. Mentioning it here just in case.

Everything looks great!  I agree that a VPX table would be nice.

It would be cool if the score for the game would display on the backboard like a hockey clock.  It would also be also nice if each game would have a time limit like a real hockey game.  For example, each game would have 3 periods three minute lengths.  (or something similar).  The backglass would display the timer, period and hockey score.  You could have the pinball score display in a DMD.  Just throwing out some ideas.  I really love this concept.

I thought about adding a game clock recently but decided against it. I forgot why - maybe so players could rack up higher scores (pinball score) or come back from big score deficits. I went last night for at least 5 minutes without a goal being scored for either player.

I'm still working on it. Will post more details soon and an update you all can play. I have things going on in real life that are getting in the way a bit, but I'm still going.

I also have some ideas for other tables - VPX of course from now on. Similar odd stuff. I actually don't know enough about pinball to make any realistic or cool regular pinball tables, but with stuff like Hockey I can make the rules and make it do whatever I want.

A few new images.

I made 3 trophies (primitives). I'm not crazy about them but whatever.

They rise out of the playing surface when the game starts. There is one trophy for each of the 3 games or rounds that you can play. If you win the first game you are rewarded with the trophy on the left slowly rising into view. When the next round starts it lowers out of view.

When all games are over (win or lose) you are presented with whatever trophies you have won. If you win the final game then you will see all three of them.

hockey_pinball3.jpg

Below, a closeup of the Slap Shot guy (right side) and the "Shoot Around the Boards" area at the top.

closeup1.jpg

If you shoot the puck around the back of the other team's net (puck must hit both corners of the ice at the top illuminating each light), the lights will light up and you will get a bonus and a notch increase in your penalty meter. I don't know if that description makes sense. Dumping the puck around the boards is something done in real hockey. The puck is shot in hard and it follows the boards all the way around behind the net.

Okay then. The Slap Shot guy rotates up and into view whenever a slap shot is activated. He pops out of the slot you see to the left of the figure. Once the puck is fired at your net, he slips back out of view.

I will try and get a new version uploaded today.

New Hockey Pinball Version Available!!!

Major Update!

New Features:

- Play all 3 teams for the Championship!

- Ring/TV announcer voices (need some work though).

- New Slap Shot model pops up to blast a shot at you!

- Trophies displayed when games are won.

- Flashing lights when you win a game.

- Re-did some of the sound effect volumes

- Probably a lot more features and fixes than I can remember.

To Do:

- Table sound effects, and "buzzers and sirens" alerts for certain events

- Fix voices. Did a bad job post processing.

- Make trophies lower slowly instead of disappearing.

- Change colors of "KingPins" logo so it's less similar to Ice Demons logo.

- Fix minor bug where "Powerplay!" is announced more than once.

- It's possible for the ball to come to rest on top of a popup Defender or in a doorway. A nudge is required to get the ball moving. I've fixed most of these but it can still happen.

- I made it so you can't nudge while serving a penalty. This is not realistic though since if this were a real table there would be no way to physically prevent nudging. I will address this.

ENJOY!!! Let me know what you think!

Hockey Pinball Beta Download

This is not a newer version than the previous post, I just thought I'd add it to this post so people won't miss it.

I have an idea on a theme for this table. The movie "Slap Shot" of course! YouTube it if you don't know it, particularly "the Hansons".

I think I may make a second "Slap Shot" version of this table. I would simply swap out my audio for (many many) sound bites from the movie. I don't know if I can get in any trouble for this so I will make my original version as well.

I'd also change the team names and maybe some other graphics to match the movie.

I watched Slap Shot (again) a few days ago so I could get one sound clip ("Get out there and STICK' EM!") and I realized this idea needs to happen haha.

I won't do it until this table is complete.

After that I will probably start a new project in VPX. Not sure if it will be a sport or what - I do have ideas - but it probably won't be normal pinball.
