Another colourful Taito, these JP Salas versions are really enjoyable to play.

I've got two questions concerning the sound though (also applicable to other Taitos):

1. Is there a way to adjust (lower) the ROM sound? Hawkman in particular seems to have a lot of heavily distorted sound effects.

2. The synthesized speech seems "broken up" on pretty much all Taito tables (i.e. more than the real ones), is there a VPX or VPinMame setting available to remedy this?

In general I want to thank you for your work on your table recreations, the 3.0 versions especially manage to simulate that "standing in an arcade" feel.

Taito's only have an analog volume pot between the amp and the speaker

You will have to hit F12 with the table running (and not in exclusive full screen mode) and enter in a decibel value to reduce over all volume by.

You can also try running the ROM with the pnmame display unhidden, and in focus, and hit tilde (~)

then arrow up or down, and you can see the default volume values for the various audio channels, and you can individually try adjusting them that way.

I gave it a try and as I suspected the distortion is still there, just with a lower volume (which creates a lack of balance with the mechanical sounds).

Interestingly, after I set the level back to 0dB, reloaded and started playing it seems I somehow managed to crash the sound portion of the ROM.

The table was still performing the way it should, but all the electronic sound was now reduced to a continuous "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" that only stopped after I quit to the editor.

Fortunately it was business as usual when I went back in, but it was still something I hadn't experienced in VPX before.

Speech could simply be current state of votrax emulation on taito controllers

I think so as well, I upgraded to VPinMAME 3.3b today and I get the impression that digitized speech is slightly improved.

Interestingly though, speech on Cavaleiro Negro for instance is still inferior to that of the VP8 table by destruk.

That does not sound like a Votrax SC01 though

it kind of sounds like someone trying to simulate it through VOX

And i say that having several operational Votrax units
I have a functional Wizard of Wor PCB and 2 VS100's

Votrax knows one language
English, everything else pretty much comes out sounding like what vpinmame is doing

It has a limited set of phoneme's to construct with, and they are all centered around english

It sounds pretty hideous trying to speak in german or spanish or french etc

It is hysterical having it try to talk in japanese or pretty much any asian language

Excellent table JP, I love the way it plays. As for the speech, as wiesshund wrote the Votrax is designed for English only, but while playing I started to undestand a bit, the little Brazilian I learned so long ago coming back again. It says "thank you" (obrigado) when you put some credit. VP is even a language teaching tool, there's nothing this app can't do! :otvclap: Had to prick my ears though, as the accent is terrible...

I had a very strange thing happen: the table turned into La Monte Young's piece "The Second Dream Of The High-Tension Line Stepdown Transformer". All ROM sounds stopped and then it played a drone instead. I thought it was a ROM bug and expected some sore of error state on the display but everything was working fine, every scoring items triggered, balls were accounted when lost, etc. I couldn't resist chanting while playing, third, minor third, tritone, fifth, dominant seven, etc. VP even teaches music! :-)

Anyway, not complaining, I liked it, a new instrument, but I'm curious, has anybody experienced this before?

If you learn Portuguese through the Votrax, you will probably never be able to speak to a Portuguese speaking human being ever

LOL

The Phonemes are just so wrong LOL

The designers of those south american tables had to be sitting in a room laughing their asses off while programing it

LOL, at the very least I'll get a job dubbing "Electric Dreams" and "WarGames" :-)

I think I can still hear the designers still laughing ;-)
