OK, got 'em.

It's clear that that flipper pegs are acting as cushions to prevent mechanical stress each time the ball bounces off the lowered flipper - Stern's Hot Hand and Dracula have those as well. But I'm going to put the presence of the inlane pegs down to different manufacturing practices between Stern in Chicago and Allied Leisure (who were notoriously cheap) in their Australian branch, even though those inlane pegs make absolutely no sense whatever. Without the cushioning impact of a mini-post rubber, every impact is going to progressively damage the peg itself, or its drill hole, which seems to be apparent on your playfield. Even letting the ball hit the guide rail instead (which looks sturdier, and is anchored to the playfield at both ends) would reduce a lot of the impact stress at this focal point. You could spike yourself trying to fix or remove a bent peg too.

When I get round to doing this, I'll either put replace the pegs with mini-posts and see what difference those make, or I'll just leave the inlane pegs out entirely.

Yeah, agree. Cheepness.

Have a close look at the peg img, at how flogged out and dented the long peg is.

Normally on the stern double inlanes there is nothing? What does , say, Wild Fyre have?

I think Minipost replacements will be the likely option.

Now to do touch ups and clearcoat.

Here's a high res BG img along with shots of the back of the BG and displays / lamps on the backboard,
for anyone wanting to do the UVP.

Look what I happened to have stashed, I do have a manual. Include switch and lamp assignments.
