I wonder if having a bottom mounted traditional pinball speaker or one of the replacement "super bass" speakers
would have any impact on the playfield LCD?

On Saturday afternoon I finally routed the edges of the under head panel. It fits like a dream. I suprised myself with how nice it turned out. smile.gif

Spent another 3-4 hours on Sunday getting the head fit correctly. I had to remove the bottom internal metal corner brackets and redrill them and the
cabinet because the backbox hinges now mount into those brackets (because the cabinet is a couple inches wider than the original).
The left bracket mounted fine for some reason, but the right side was a real pain in the... But it's finally test mounted and seems to work just fine.
I'll need to remove it all however so I can bondo over the original holes, but that's in the future. I still need to cut out a hole for the DMD LCD
as well as permanantly mount the under box panel, but it's coming along.

Pics from my latest updates...

Under head panel...

Aftter that, I spent hours getting the hinges mounted...

And last night got the coin door and lockdown bar mech in place...

One word of caution though. I used the old front panel as a template on where to drill my holes
for the bolts. That's a great idea... except the bolt holes for the lockdown bar mech were in the
wrong spots, so I had to redrill them.

And... when drilling the rightside hole, I punched through the front of the cabinet with the drill, and into my midsection,
shredding to heck one of my favorite T-shirts.

So, be careful out there kiddies! happy.gif

Nothing too major this time. Got my rewelded lockdown bar back from my co-worker... and it fits perfectly!

Looks like I'll have to paint it as I suspected I'd have to anyway. Anyone know what that bumpy black
paint is that they use on the new Stern pins metal parts?

Not sure what Stern uses for sure but a good search to start with would be, textured spray paint like this Amazon link

Tremclad makes a high heat version for refinishing grills or, if you want it to last forever, find a local powder coating shop and get it done there.

LOL!

Just got word from my buddy in the UK that the speaker grill stencils are done!

Which will go good along with the speaker/DMD panel grills I just finished!

I had some of the perforated AL metal scavenged from a gutted Atari arcade cab. Glad I saved the metal because it worked perfectly!

Still more work to do of course, but getting closer...

Just need to find someone to rework the coin door artwork to fit a widebody cab. wink.gif

Yesterday ordered some hanging brackets for the DMD/speaker panel, plus some felt pincab protectors and new leg levelers with nylon bases.
Amazing how fast the money adds up for little things. sad.gif

Thanks! Now that it's getting a bit warmer out, I'm hoping tonight to take the heat gun and start stripping the old cab art off.

After that I'll need to re-countersink a couple of the cab screws because they're not set completely flush, then after that I'll
start bondo-ing the screw heads and any existing cab damage and then start sanding.

Plus, I still need to strip and repaint the backbox hinges and any bolts as they all look pretty nasty. tongue.gif

Still not sure about the ball launcher. I plan on picking up the digital plunger setup, but I kind of wanted a push button launcher as well,
but the cab art doesn't easily lend itself to a dual launcher setup.

Worked a couple days on it this week (about 12 hours or so).

Managed to get all the old cabinet art stripped off, stabbed myself in 2 fingers with the razor blade. smile.gif
Got half the cab sanded. Still need to sand the other side.

After that I need to use the wood putty I bought and essentially bondo any dings in the
wood surface and prep it for painting.

Managed to score a couple old pinball speakers for the DMD panel from work.
One speaker fit perfectly, the smaller one wasn't small enough, so I had to drill new
holes and add new screw post bases. Just got it all assembled!

Now I just need to add the hanger brackets, DMD panel graphic and cut a plexi/lexan piece to cover it!

Just realized I haven't posted any pics of "recent" progress, despite having talked about them in the first posting.

Stripping the original cab artwork...

Got the legs and lockdown bar painted. Not completely certain I like the hammertone color. It's less jet black and more of a dark grey.

Don't have a pic of it, but I have most of the screw holes bondoed over and half sanded. Need to get some more
sandpaper for the electric sander.

Still have to putty the backbox edges and fill the holes.

PS: Thanks for the title change!

Spent a few more days last week and last weekend getting back at it. Finally finished the wood/bondo
puttying and sanding on both the cab body and backbox. It turned out pretty nice overall, even the larger areas
I filled due to chips/splinters in the wood. Got all the main bolt heads painted black and THEN I took the leap and FINALLY
drilled the holes for my flipper buttons and game start/buy in.

That was nerve wracking to say the least! But it worked out okay in the end and now I have appropriately counter sunk
flipper holes AND start/buy in button holes! All I need now is to find a plunger template and that will be good as well.

I plan on starting painting tonight. I'll be using black for the button holes, some touch up on the backbox, and then I'll
get some purple for the main cab body/head.

THEN... I have to worry about mounting the LCD and all that crap. smile.gif
