The lines were drawn and the first cuts have been made...

As this cab will be a virtual pinball & mame arcade cabinet, I've left myself some extra space - 12" exactly - to put in two joysticks and a whole "wack" of buttons for various arcade games. Wish me luck!

Todd.

Yup, the first time I've built a cab.

Pinuck donated the rusty old pinball table legs from his donor cab to me and I "harvested" the 3/4" plywood from the scrap pile at work.

Speaking of pinball table legs, my mounting brackets, leg bolts and rubber feet for the leg adjusters arrived from Starburst Coin this morning and my led lighted buttons arrived from Multicade too.

Todd.

That's the way to do it! I built a good chunk of my MAME cabinet "harvesting" scrap parts from work. Good luck Todd!

I made a tiny bit more progress today:

I'm going to try and cut out the bottom next, without disturbing my neighbors, if that's possible. I'm already concerned the apartment building superintendent will be knocking on my door asking wtf is up with the noise from the jig-saw. ohmy.gif

Just tell him your building a coffin for someone that hasn't died yet then show him the cab. Maybe he will leave you alone after that. dblthumb.gif

Progress report May 14, 2011 - Project Unknown: codename "Balcony-Build" status report.

Well some more progress has been made, including the assembly of the cabinet box as well as the pinball legs were de-rusted and painted with red primer. Here are some pictures:

Here is the "box" minus the floor that I screwed together Friday night

I moved onto the legs right after lunch - here they are rusty (a before pic)

and here they are after using a 3M rust remover electric drill wheel attachment

Note: I used the 3M wheel like a manual "block-sander" and did the front legs by hand and used the 3M wheel in the electric drill on the back legs because I knew how abusive this wheel can be.

Surprisingly, the back legs turned out as good as the front ones after being painted with red primer.

...and this is what the box looks like with the bottom installed

Todd.

lookin good todd.

since you left that long front lip on the cabinet, did you decide to leave the MAME controls installed permanently?

That would be an affirmative, I ditched the removable MAME control panel since it wouldn't be sturdy enough. My only concern is making the "plunge-cut" to make the hole for the coin door so I can preserve the piece of wood and use it for the door. I want to use a couple brass piano hinges on the outside for effect. Or maybe some miniature brass gate hinges if I can find any. (fancy gate hinges with curly-ques)

Todd.

Well the weather didn't co-operate so I was forced to work on something other than painting the legs and getting them installed. (I have to thank the building superintendent though, for allowing me to use the table saw in the shop to make the support wedges for the table legs.) I did spend a few hours today, laying out and drilling the holes for the MAME controls. Here's a couple pics to show where I'm heading.

-here's the underside with the sacrificial piece underneath so I wouldn't damage the table.

-here's the controller with the buttons and one of the joysticks temporarily installed.

Best Regards,
Todd.

Indeed it is... sadly, it will be de-cased and re-purposed for the pin-cab!! biggrin.gif But, as I am a (semi) conscious person concerned with recycling, the plastic shoe-box will be dutifully deposited in the recycling bin.

I 'temp installed' the legs so I could get an idea for the height. Here are some more pics:

Front

Back

Controller sanded and getting ready for staining and eventually, varnishing.

At this point I discovered that with the front levelers in the lowest position, the pin-cab was going to be a tad too high to comfortably play pinball and MAME games so I decided to give the front a bit of a "haircut".

I gave this pin-cab's mane a 3 inch trim with the jigsaw.

Once I have the height just right, I'll drill out the flipper button holes, the start button and get the mounting of the nanotech DIY plunger sorted out too.

Best Regards,
Todd.

What MAME games are you planning on playing in a vertical orientation?
I had the same idea awhile back, and cut my panel similarly, then realized I would
never play fighters on a vertical cab... thus I only needed to drill 4 buttons, max,
per player (could probably stay happy even with 3).

Good work so far, looking forward to seeing the rest...
