山のぼりゲーム or Yamanobori (a.k.a. Mountain Climbing Game) was a Japanese "Eremeka" type arcade game released in 1981 by Komaya. At the time of its release, video games were already in the mainstream, but the simple addicting challenge of the game had caught the hearts of many children and became one of the most popular Japanese electromechanical style games. For this reason, the game can still be found in the corners of many Japanese candy stores & arcades and has since been rediscovered as a challenging representative of "reggae" (Japanese retro games). Today, modern players have reembraced their nostalgia for this classic title, hosting tournament challenges, and adding new competitive rules & scoring to the original “simple” game objective.

This version of Yamanobori represents our interpretation of the Japanese tournament rules & scoring; where the player may climb to the top in the least amount of time (for an added time bonus), or they may score additional points by attempting a “landslide”. A landslide run begins when the player climbs to the space right before the top of the mountain (marked by the glowing green compass), but instead of advancing all the way to the top (for a prize), they instead backtrack past all the obstacles in reverse, in an attempt to reach the START sign and then climb back up the mountain again before time runs out. The further you backtrack without hitting an obstacle, the higher your score. However, touching any obstacles along the way will send you BACK TO START and reset your score to 0, making the landslide run the ultimate challenge of risk versus reward.

In addition to including the Tournament rules for scoring, we have also added a SETTINGS MENU with accessible difficulty levels (which visually adjusts the speed of the obstacles) to allow players to easily practice the basic game objective, or attempt the landslide challenge. Scoring is adjusted for each difficulty setting.

The flipper buttons should move your FORWARD and BACK- it feels reversed at first but the RIGHT flipper actually moves you forward up the mountain- to match the original Japanese control panel
